The targeting rule was needed to effect behavior but the ejections and half game suspensions should only be applicable for demonstrably intentional misconduct which is blatantly obvious to both replay booth and field observants alike.

The Ducks are a one loss team.
I want to see the young talent as much as anyone but until there’s another loss or the offense fails to improve I don’t see changing QBs quite yet.
But the ceiling people discussed preseason looked to have been reached at the moment at several position groups, not just at QB.
WR, RB, QB all have starters who likely WONT play on Sunday. Verdel, Dye, Redd, Johnson, Brown don't at present look like Sunday players.Whose going to step up and take starting roles?
I understand and almost agree with putting the young guys in for experience. But I’m not sure that at one loss and ranked 8 its quite the time to start to play for next year.
I think continuing to compete and weathering this storm of injuries together will pay culture dividends next year

Spot on.
Sadly Mario is also learning on the fly how to actually be a head coach and without any kind of natural play calling ability. He needs to get better.
But so do some position groups.
We talk about QB but let’s be honest; Verdell and Dye aren’t ever outrunning anyone nor do they have the bruising stature to run all day between the tackles. Physics matters. I love watching those guys run but want a fast 220+ running the rock in the or killer level speed. Right now we have two really good smart experienced backs who are a tad slow and not that big or durable.
Johnny Johnson and Jaylon Redd aren’t out jumping people or running away from anyone either. Not tall, not that fast, pretty good hands, great blockers. Not the tag line for championship teams WR roster entry.
I can’t predict whether the Ducks would be better off playing some of the younger more physically gifted players but know that as much as I’ve enjoyed Dye Verdell, Johnson, Redd they are not physically gifted at their positions and there is a lot of room to upgrade at RB WR and QB too.

I heard Mario had Joe Moorehead line up 7 yard deep from a brick wall and try to prove “you can just run right through it, Joe”.

I’m willing to give MC the time but want to see him improve his coaching skills as well.
The clock management still needs work.
The offense has the talent to score 50 every game but doesn’t. Why?
MC didn’t call plays in the absence of JM. Or did he and how many? Does MC have an offensive mind? Is MC deadweight on game day.
why is 5 yard shotgun better than running behind a 360lb guard with one yard to gain?

Injuries and youth aside, this team looks weak at times. Huge upside but not there yet.
My best predictors for winning football are Run the ball, stop their run, pressure the qb.
The Ducks don’t consistently dominate at any of those.
two first downs needed late in the game. Control your destiny. The offense should have won this game.
That they couldn’t only reinforces the idea that the offense isn’t really that good.
Now that the playoff aspirations are essentially done, is it time to start giving younger players real snaps? WR, RB, QB?

MC is bringing in athletes like we haven’t consistently seen, ever. He’s also still learning to be an effective game manager in terms of time outs and managing the clock.
He is neither an offensive or defensive play caller by experience when a player or coach and is perhaps more dependent on both of his coordinators for offensive and defensive production than some other coaches who had coordinator specialities. I think we now have upgrades at both coordinator positions in terms of experience and ability.
Id also point out that MC has little kids that would do well from a stable environment for many more years. He’s a family man and I suspect appreciates the university, booster(s), and life in Eugene. He connects with parents and athletes and I think this reinforces the aforementioned family attributes. I don’t see him seeking the NFL in the short term. Unfinished business on numerous fronts.
He has had very real success that cannot be overlooked and the next two seasons will go a long way to proving whether he’s a top head coach able to get the most out of the ever improving
level of recruiting or not.
I like where the program is heading. We’ve got serious and increasing athleticism and I think the defense will be problematic for the opposition.
I quite happy waiting and seeing what MC brings and how he’s grown since last season. He’s working on improving as much as anyone and I just wish spring ball would start already.

I’ll be interested to see what Jordan Scott’s measurable are in actuality. He does not look 6’ 1”. His wingspan does not appear long. Each of those if under sized will be much more detrimental at the next level where offensive lineman will all be taller and likely have longer wing spans. He never consistently showed the hands to get off blocks and rush the passer. He didn’t bat down many passes.
His quickness is an asset and he’s got decent speed but so will most other lineman. I’m not convinced dropping 20 lbs. helped him and he’s still a big belly guy carrying extra dead weight.
I predict a late round pick or free agent. I don’t see him as a three down NFL player.I try to remember that most NFL starters were the best 1-2 players on their college team. Can we say that about Jordan? He was a great Duck and hope he proves me wrong but the NFL exposes anyone but the very best. Even them sometimes.

I sense poise and not confidence as his issue. He didn’t make quick or accurate reads and at times looked panicky. I think he thinks he’s confident but deer in the headlights and the occasional panicked Chuck a duck doesn’t cut it in Div 1.

When Oregon came out against Ohio State in Dallas they looked like they were wearing Ohio state practice uniforms. The colors are GREEN and YELLOW. Not grey. Not Grey.

I got a MIP at UO for being the underage designated driver but allowing alcohol to be consumed in the car. Sometimes doing the right thing is still wrong.
Being the genius I was, I then proceeded to use a roommates paid UO tuition card to get a “replacement” UO ID complete with my picture and then went immediately to the DMV and got an Oregon drivers license under the same roommates name but with my picture. Two photo IDs were invincible.
Risky and arguably not lawful but they both worked for two years even when given repeatedly to police.
When my friends got MIP citations and I watched chatting with the cops it was priceless. For me.
I’ve said it a thousand times. Thank God I was in college before digital cameras, government computer networks, and social media.
I would have ended up living in a van down by the river. Oh wait, I live in a double wide on the river.

I agree. I’d have thought he’d have given spring a chance but the more I think about it the more sense it makes.
Grad transfer, three years to play, more of a pro style QB with AB having already supplanted him in the biggest game of the year and some seriously talented guys ready to compete. He could possibly have been fourth on the depth chart and never start a game again. You never really know whose going to step up, or get hurt. another great appreciative farewell considering how thought it must be. -
I didn’t think my prediction would come true so quickly.
I was hoping he’d compete but it’s not hard to see that he was facing serious competition from better athletes more suited to run Joe Moorehead’s system.
Best of luck to him. He tried his best during a very difficult year. I hope he enjoys some success. -
Great post and great stats. I’m certainly not the expert in the room because Mario hasn’t offered me a job.
I just see Tyler's decision making as less than ideal.
However, a full spring and camp might make all the difference and prove me wrong. Ask all of my exes. I’m apparently wrong a lot more than I think.

Add three or four picks in there and it becomes pedestrian. The throws in question were bad decisions into bad spots. The defense simply didn’t make the plays.
I like him and want him to succeed but AB looks more athletic, has more experience and Ashford and Thompson look like a better fit for the Moorhead O as does AB.
My PREDICTION: Tyler faces intense competition and loses out to one of the three mentioned and enters next years transfer portal.
Mark my words and then skewer and roast me if I am wrong.

Defenses dropped 3or 4 potential interceptions in Tyler’s first few games. Had the defensive players made those plays his season would look different.
he could be the third best QB, AT OREGONHeck, look at Joe Montana. 1981 CHAMPIONSHIP he had three interceptions and Everson Walls should have had the fourth, one play before “the catch” which changed everything. That play was right in front of me. Good times. Joe’s reputation might look different if E walls does not drop that pass.

I think coaching in Eugene requires the right “fit”. I believe CK even was looking long term until the NFL money and challenge swayed him. He built a massive house I believe but left at a high point. I winder what he’d say privately about whether he’d want to be Oregon’s Coach again
MC is building something of his own design. Additionally he has small children, should say young because they are probably bigger than me by now.I’m sure the stability is an asset for his family.
Coach D mentioned how he likes college station type towns and Eugene is a great college town. He’s been around enough to know what he wantsCoach M is rebuilding a bit after an unfortunate experience previously. Hard to see him jumping ship in the next couple of seasons. I believe that looking for coaches who aren’t simply looking to leverage towards another job will be how to build a perennial powerhouse and that MC’s approach is creating a culture that will attract coaching talent.
it’s hard to really compare the present day Coaching job at Oregon to past years because of the talent of the athletes recruited and the trajectory of the program but big money can be hard to pass up.

Four game redshirt sounds like a good option. I love that it gives coaches a look at a young player and the young players an opportunity to force the coaches hand and get playing time beyond 4 games. Win win.

Has Coach D ever had this much talent on any of his defenses.?
He’s turned around many programs with far less but I am curious if anyone has a sense of what teams he’s coached that had commensurate or better talent?

I’m kind of a oregon homer and definitely biased towards Duck success but would hope you are both right and wrong in your excellent statistical presentation.
Right in the fact that this is still quite a young team as you point out and wrong only in the sense that I hope there is no “THE” year and that Mario Cristóbals culture building is creating a perennial contender and recruiting juggernaut such that every year forward we are honestly believing that it’s THE year.
I do that anyway which proves I’m totally and completely biased. But c’mon how can’t I like what I see.

This is why I pay attention.
I think it’s fun to speculate but even more when lower ranked or evaluated players make big gains in off seasons.
That Mariota guy was a three star and relatively unheard of.
this is the beauty of college ball. Kids becoming men.Some can’t miss types flop and then there are my favorites, the guys we don’t know who will work so hard they become stars.
The culture looks strong and building an ever better program. exciting times to be a duck.
