30Duck No. 1 Share Posted October 3 (edited) The Ducks dominated the Bruins in the 1st half, went through the motions in the 2nd. Georgia was very fortunate to get past Kentucky, winning 13-12, then after a Bye, found themselves down, 30-7 at the half, to Alabama. then almost came back to win. Ohio State hasn't been tested yet, but we'll see what happens to them with Iowa. Edited October 3 by 30Duck
Nevada Dawg No. 2 Share Posted October 4 Well I'm probably forgetting someone here but there hasn't been anyone coming to my addled mind that have made a strong case as a four quarter team this year. Somebody will gel and do it and I hope that the Dawgs and OBD are two of them.! With the advent of sizable NIL stipends and the inevitable spreading of talent across more schools, the days of the all-powerful bully boys like Saban's pre 2020 Bama and more recently the 21 and 22 Georgia Bulldawgs may largely be over. That is good for college football and some of you may remember that I predicted this might happen about a year ago. It seems like it might be happening even sooner than I had anticipated. 1

But parity due to teams being constantly in flux isn't necessarily an improvement. NIL, the transfer portal, has made building a team an anachronism. I've been wondering, has NIL made for more parity or mediocrity? Sounds like a potential future article. Hope someone gets on that.
Charles Fischer Administrator No. 5 Share Posted October 4 On 10/4/2024 at 1:44 PM, DanLduck said: I've been wondering, has NIL made for more parity or mediocrity? In my opinion...neither. What it has done is concentrate more of the top talent at the top football programs, as Oregon has benefited enormously from the transfer portal and NIL. We have a MUCH better team due to the portal and NIL, versus what this year would have been, thus creating the talent gap between the top teams and everyone else to be much wider than before. Ask Beavis for confirmation... Mr. FishDuck

A bigger factor has been the end of Saban's career for increased parity. There was a time where Saban monopolized all the top talent and there were few teams that could contest Bama. Dabo did a good job of it for a while... but his refusal to interact with the portal has left Clemson playing from behind in terms of talent. Smart and Georgia has contested Bama for high school talent and done a good job grabbing a few pieces in the portal. Ohio State and Ryan Day haven't broken through even though they've been bringing in top recruits for years. Michigan and Washington reached the championship game last year because of their 5th and 6th year heavy rosters not because they've out recruited anyone on a year to year basis. There has been a lot more parity in the past few years because Saban was losing his iron grip over college football. NIL help loosen his grip as other teams were able to emerge as top talent contenders but more than that we've seen strong recruiters show up at Ole Miss (Kiffin) and Texas (Sark) and Oregon (Cristobal and then Lanning). Even without NIL they would start peeling talent away from Bama but NIL has certainly made it a lot easier. 1 1
Drake Moderator No. 7 Share Posted October 4 It is college football. Top players move on to the NFL, and seniors graduate. In the past, replacing those players solely with inexperienced players would definitely impact the team’s success the following year. The transfer portal has smoothed that process out. Without the portal, we probably would not have been picked as a team with a legit shot at a title this year. With the portal, at least we have a shot. David Marsh No. 8 Share Posted October 5 Foot came off the gas at the end to give backups some time. Didn't play 4 quarters of football because there were 3 really good ones... Or mostly good ones.
