Who Should Get COY, Cignetti, Lanning or Somebody Else?

A bunch of great contenders.

It’s that time of the year in college football, and the Oregon Ducks are the No. 1 team in the country. The playoff picture is taking...

Sure alot of football left to play!

To me it is CIgnetti and Lanning.

If Indiana wins out then its a no brainer.

Go Ducks.....

To Lanning it’s probably: “So what?”

If he wins the Natty it would be "a great honor"... Without the championship ring he'll consider it a "so what" for sure.

Interesting to speculate on this but shouldn't we pause on passing pronouncements until a little later in the season?? In our new marathon-type years, we are about ready to leave the field for halftime.

There are other names from other conferences that might also warrant consideration as well when all is said and done. One that pops into my head is first-year coach Mike Elko of Texas A&M who has turned that dumpster fire completely around and may well be a major factor in the SEC season this year. I am not arguing for him here, but just saying that he could well deserve consideration as COY if the Aggies keep manhandling people like they did with LSU last weekend.  The guy at BYU is having a pretty fair season as well.

A lot of these speculations may fall by the wayside as the long season progresses.

I'm no expert on this, so I am curious what criteria are considered when making the decision? Looking at a Dan Lanning team that wasn't "in shambles" to begin with when he took them over, but now seeing how talented and competitive they've become is still impressive, but maybe not as impressive as someone like Cignetti who DID take a team that was "in shambles" and has quickly turned them into a threat in the conference.

If that were the only criteria, I'd say Cig definitely gets the vote. But when you look at the way Lanning COACHES, his game management, his ability to motivate, the culture he's built, his recruiting prowess, etc. etc., That type of data surely pushes the needle more in the direction of Lanning in my opinion.

Again, not an expert, so I could be way off the mark, but I do think those two must be some of the top contenders for the award! (Even if, to Nevada Dawg's point, it's still early).

This is where I am. Lanning is coaching like we've never seen at Oregon, created a completely new identity, got through the early games. Perhaps this is a low bar, completely outcoached Ryan Day. All this, and we also believe that he's managing the playbook, playing time, play clock to get max effort for the elongated season.

Cignetti is doing a great job at Indiana. But the team he's coaching to 8-0, with 0 wins over a ranked team, is not the Indiana team that finished 3-9 last season.

I said it before in another thread, I think it will be Mike Elko for A&M by the end of the year. Taking the trash A&M team from last year and finishing in the SEC conference championship would do it.

Of course IU doing the same in the B1G would be equally significant, it's just not quite as probable to me.

If the folks at ESPN have their way, it'll be Coach Prime...
