Cry Havoc and Release the Ducks of War

Recommended Posts

On Saturday against the Washington Huskies, we finally saw the full vision of Dan Lanning’s defense. From the moment Lanning got to Oregon he has talked about his defense creating havoc. Havoc does not always come from sacks or tackles for loss, but from causing disruption — though the best ways to create disruption is by putting the opponent behind...

The Huskies definitely weren't the worst team that the Ducks played this season. Without self inflicted foibles early in the season against WSU and Rutgers, they're 8-3 going into the game. It wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome, but Purdue is the worst team.

It was the perfect opportunity for the Ducks to unleash the defense on the dogs, who thought that starting a freshman QB, in his first game, against the No.1 team in the country, on the road, in the loudest stadium, was their best option,,,

The defense was so destructive because it was proactive, not reactive, it forced the action. Whatever Washington tried to do, it wasn't going to work.

I have hardly seen Blake Purchase on the field this year.  I was expecting him to be a beast after what I saw last year.  I'm not sure what's up, maybe he's injured, but if he isn't seeing the field, the front 7 is beyond loaded imo.  I hope he sticks around and doesn't leave so we can enjoy his talents moving forward!

Great article. The defense basically gave up ten points all on the first and last drives of the first half for the huskies. The field goal after the fumble and the garbage time touch down were not on them.

I always love watching how OBD's defense adjusts throughout the game. Chain moving third and long completions and QB scrambles that happen in the first half become incompletions and stops in the second.

I expect PSU to frustrate us with third down catches by their all world tight end early but that should disappear as the game wears on.

This will be PSU's seventh game in a row. The Ducks looked very rested and ready to go last week after a bye. It all bodes well for another great episode of Ducks vs Them.

The title by the way comes from the Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. I took the original words, for some reason over all these centuries people keep writing down "cry havoc and release the dogs of war" but we all know that can't possibly be right. Shakespeare wrote "Ducks" so I merely corrected it.

Thank you, DM.

Truly Mighty Ducks vs. diminished dogs. Fisch should have thrown in the towel or the referee should have stopped the fight. I tuned into a football game and witnessed a mugging.😁

The Regular Season? Where did it go? Goes by even faster when you're 12-0. 😍

Purchase got passed in the rotation by Jaedon Moore, No. 56 who got a sack in the game. We have had as many as 12 Edge rushers, and it stands to reason that whoever is not playing will transfer.  I am sad about it too, but Lanning is simply trying to recruit tons of great players, find out who is best and play them, while the others can transfer.

Since Lanning has recruited more Edge rushers last year, this year, and yet after another before the February signing--I am assuming that Blake is on his way out.  Sorry.

Good to know!  Yep I agree with the reasoning and figured that was the case.  Best man wins.  Thinking the same way with Dickey in the receiver room!  Again it just means the talent pool is so rich.

Agree, in a recent post I mentioned this defense doesn't look like a BDBD, but more like the Chaos Defense Lanning promised. Your observation that we now have all the pieces together allowing for A Defense of War, or Chaos to ensue is spot on.
