The BIG Winner of Championship Weekend is…

Recommended Posts

No major Duck injuries if any at all!!

I wouldn’t blame anyone for being a little concerned over our defensive performance against Penn State and I’m sure it will leave a bad taste in the mouth of OBD as they visit the doctor on Monday, but I’m so thankful that we only need to visit Dr. Filmstudy and not Dr. Injury.

This month long playoff will be a war of attrition and the depth of every team will be tested. Snagging the B1G crown in our first year, beating all three blue bloods, and securing the overall #1 playoff seed were all incredible feats. Just as important was getting out of Indianapolis healthy.

With that said, what does Dr. Filmstudy prescribe for the Ducks heading into the Rose Bowl?

Dan Lanning said it best a couple of times in post game interviews, in that there are games where the defense bails them out, but this game, the offense bailed out the defense.

Penn State played their best game of the entire year, and all of the analysts stated that. We got their best shot, and beat them.

The ‘Lions are pretty darn good, and instead of tearing down our team for weaknesses, we should be giving credit to Penn State for their strengths.

The Penn State fan forums were saying the same thing.  That Penn State played the very best game they could and STILL got beat by Oregon.  There is some frustration with their coaching decisions (the 2-pt attempt, airing it out instead of running when Nico Reed got the game sealing INT), but they felt that the game was the best they had played all year.

Unlike UW fans (who whine about Uncle Phil, DL, whatever else they can think of) the Penn State fans gave Oregon credit for taking everything their team had and still winning.

Agreed Charles. I would love insight on how Penn State offensive line neutralized our defensive line. The hands to the face foul on Harmon seemed like a frustration foul because I know those guys have a ton of pride up front.

I agree, Penn State brought it last night, both teams struggled to stop the other on offense. PSU had nothing that could contain Tez, and JJ and Whitting both had some timely runs, and Sadiq went up and over! Oregon had Gabriel; Penn State had Allar.

This was my biggest concern in this game. I'm glad we stayed injury free.

Now if we can stay injury free in practice that would be even better.

One of the things I really give our defense credit for is they don’t cave to momentum.  In both the Ohio State and Penn State games, the defense did enough.

What I mean by that is Penn State nor Ohio State were not able to make enough plays to outscore OBD offense.

That’s huge because the offense didn’t have to be absolutely perfect.  The offense had margin for error.

I believe that is the difference between this year and last year ( outside the fact fact the offense is pretty consistent - it is completely difficult to stop the offense or kill the kind of momentum the offense maintains).

The defense may have difficulty with talented teams,  but they find ways to handle lead changes, holding the lead, or give the offense the opportunity to take the lead when the situation calls for it.

The B1G Conference was the big winner of conference championship weekend.

Putting aside my Duck fandom...that was a really good and entertaining conference championship game featuring the #1 vs. #3 team in college football (with 1 collective loss between them).  By comparison, the SEC Championship was a sloppy game, and I couldn't care less about the other conference championship games, unless you are a fan of one of the teams participating.

Both Oregon and PSU left no doubt that they belonged in the playoffs last night and are two of the best teams in the land.

[And the B1G got the #1 team and conference champion for 1/2 media shares...]

If Penn State played like that against Ohio State they would have won. Period.

I think James Franklin might be turning a corner on his coaching career. Maybe some Mad Man Dan inspiration.

Because they called and played a heck of a game and they came back and took momentum away from the Ducks right when the Ducks were going to run up the score and put the game out of reach.

The Ducks defense bent but managed to break fewer times than PSU's so that's the game.
