Mike West No. 3 Share Posted February 13 Probably a good move for the teams. I wouldn’t like it. I get what I feel,is advance notice of key future players. It’s how I found Joe Burrow, Amari Washington, and the like. Ohio State’s projected QB looks really good. Saw him last Spring. Same with Jeremiah Smith (you could see he was going to be pretty good). It’s how I knew the narrative about us losing to the third string Buckeye QB was actually the 2nd string QBs in the Spring (and he looked good then too). This kind of move will deter staffs from also getting that kind of look as a strategy to poach players, AND players won’t get as much a sense of where they stand in the Spring (meaning they will work harder to secure playing time in the Fall). Double edged sword for me. I really like getting a sense of where OBD are in the Spring. Especially on prospective young future impact players. 2 1
The Kamikaze Kid Moderator No. 4 Share Posted February 13 I enjoy attending the spring game. I remember a couple years ago a new receiver caught a routine 12 yard pass in the middle of the field surrounded by defenders. He did one tiny fake created just a little separation found a crease and was gone. After a quick look at the roster list I knew this new guy Tez was going to be special. If the coaches think a different schedule is for the best, I would understand. Still, I enjoy the feeling of heading back to the stadium after a long cold winter and seeing the football team getting ready for the next season. 1 2
Nevada Dawg No. 5 Share Posted February 14 The Spring game is such an ingrained tradition at Georgia that the fans will demand it and, unless the powers that be forbid it, will likely be held by Kirby Smart. Former Georgia players have said that after how many practices of mostly drill work, they always looked forward to concluding the Spring with a game-like atmosphere at the stadium before the fans. Fans like the games to check out the new recruits with their kids and to stir the juices for the upcoming season. Show me a coach who doesn't want to practice and/or evaluate the progress of his team in competitive conditions, and I'll suspect that I am looking at a likely loser. 2
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 6 Share Posted February 14 Great post and comments. As proposed by the Coaches Association, one portal window in early January would help to make all of CFB less chaotic and spring ball could maintain its traditions. However, with the season ending on 1/20/25 and on 1/25/26 this coming season, alterations to spring ball are not surprising.
Drake Moderator No. 7 Share Posted February 14 I guess that change is inevitable. The transfer portal does need better oversight, but interfering with a players ability to transfer may have legal repercussions. In my opinion, only when there is a player tampering case that actually carries substantial penalties, will things change. Losing a player to another team strictly because of NIL, or playing opportunities, is not tampering. Some coaches may accuse others of tampering, but it seems they will need substantial evidence to bring forth a legitimate complaint.
GatOrlando No. 8 Share Posted February 15 Spring Football was always more for the fans than the players imo. It's a shame that CFB is losing what made it so unique and different from the NFL but that's bound to happen when it becomes more about the money. Back in the day you'd have your guys after signing day and have at least three years to get to know them. Now it's possible to see a number three corner playing for Oregon one year and against them the next year. It's not even taboo to see a guy play for two rivals. We lost our star running back Trevor Etienne to Georgia after the 2023 season. Jayden Rashada was once considered the future QB at Florida but those plans fell apart over a NIL fiasco. Rashada has since started a season for ASU and was third string for Georgia in 2024. He is likely transferring again this off-season.
