30Duck Author Moderator No. 2 Share Posted Sunday at 02:11 AM The article mentions that the ratings are still high, good attendance, made me think back to when "American Idol" first started, millions of people watched the 1st round, because the singers were awful. Ratings have never equated with quality. The new coliseum where the Clippers plays is a marvel, full of attractions for the fans, you don't need to watch the game at all. DrJacksPlaidPants Moderator No. 3 Share Posted Sunday at 02:39 AM For me, there are two things that have ruined the game. First, the way points are generated. The big man still exists, but he sits behind the 3-point line and jacks up shots from downtown. Toughness in the key is non-existent. Second, the artificial creation of the super teams. Back in the day all the great teams were built through the draft. These days, it seems that players create alliances to win rings. There are a few exceptions like Giannis and The Joker, but the perception is that Steph and LeBron are trying to recruit players to join them so they can get one more championship.
David Marsh No. 4 Share Posted Sunday at 02:41 AM He's right... The meta game is stale. “But it’s a copycat league that we play in, and you can’t have everybody playing one way, a successful way and you playing a different way. You’ve got to get in line with what’s working to win, and right now that’s what it is.” Now this isn't entirely unique to the NBA. The NFL is saying has a very very similar problem but not to the same extreme. All pro sports suffer from it to some degree. When you only take the top 2% of the best athletes from the lower leagues you're dealing with a level of athlete that is functioning at such a high level that they can execute the game in the best way possible. Now that may shift a bit... But in the NBA right now the best athletes can chuck up threes without a problem. The officiating has been punishing physical defense for years so trying to play physical defense is pointless. Just shoot more threes! Between the ability of athletes to shoot threes at a high rate and the rule administration being what it is is it any wonder the NBA meta game is all threes all the time? College ball has variety because few teams can field enough top end players who can play the game the pros play. So they have to find other ways to win. And the officiating allows and encourages players to play defense. 1
30Duck Author Moderator No. 5 Share Posted Sunday at 02:44 AM I hate the 3 point shot. My greatest memories of basketball are all from before the 3. The Knicks of the early 70's, the Walton Trail Blazers, and of course in college, Ronnie Lee is the leading scorer in Oregon history, no 3 point shot. It has done great harm to the beauty of the game.
Annie No. 6 Share Posted Sunday at 03:08 AM I went to a small school in CT, no football team, so basketball was THE game at school (well, except for the year the soccer team won the state championship). I can remember a kid who could make shots from almost half court. My then boyfriend/eventual husband did hook shots, so of course I thought those were very exciting. Traveling was called. Double dribbles and carrying the ball were called. Dunking was not yet a thing, but hanging on the rim would have been called. Times have changed, and so has basketball. 1

More than the other sports, basketball has been taken over by the "entertainment" freaks. More scoring, 3 pointer, shot clock. All of these. In 1975, Oregon beat UCLA, 65-45, believe me, it was very entertaining. No shot clock, no 3 pointers, Ducks got off to a 20-0 lead, played keepaway the rest of the game. Wooden hated it. I can see the use of the shot clock, but not the 3.
GatOrlando No. 8 Share Posted Sunday at 03:43 AM The NBA has had to fight the "rigged" rumors more than any other sport. In my lifetime the 2002 Lakers vs Kings series sure looked suspicious. Just last week you had Dallas trade away a 26 year old MVP caliber guy and it was to the Lakers for a broken down Anthony Davis. Word is no other NBA teams were even engaged and it was pushed through so fast that it caught everybody off guard. Seems fishy to me. 1

Seems fishy to me. yeah, it's always been a wonder how the Lakers seem to always get gifted great players. 3point shot hasn't ruined the game. 90s basketball was awesome, it's the analytics that has ruined the game. It's the same with all sports, the math guys basically say what is the right way to play the game, and if you don't play that way you're stupid and should be fired. NBA would improve if they eliminate the corner 3, allow hand checking, no longer allow zone defense, basically put the rules back to where it was in the 80s/90s. Allow the players to police themselves, yes you'll get some fights, but it will improve the game, players might actually start to hate each other again instead of acting like everyone is best friends. I want to see Knicks/Heat, Bulls/Pistons, Blazers/Lakers type rivalries again. Force teams to play physical. We need more Oakleys and less Wemby's who look like they would be broken in two if they played in the 80s/90s I also severe fines and penalties for resting players, players are soft, they don't play hard, they have a slight boo boo and they sit instead of actually work for their pay, it's ridiculous. I know they changed some of the rules for how many games a players has to play to be eligible for awards. I would make it at least 70 games for the season, if you got actually hurt, tough break, but you shouldn't be allowed to rest simply because it's a back to back, toughen up and act like an adult. Just Ducky No. 10 Share Posted Sunday at 01:25 PM The nba has been unwatchable for many years, I’ve always blamed the 3 point line for its demise. Girls high school basketball is much more interesting. Lol 1

That's right, "analytics" says the 3 is the shot to take, so get rid of it. Touchdowns from 50 yards aren't worth more. I agree completely about "Load Management" an Ouchie and a player is in street clothes, his $40M salary, recuperating. The season is far too long, none of the players care about competing the first 50 games or so: that ridiculous mid-season tournament. The NBA All Star Game, 240-230? The Dunk contest used to be fun, actual stars competed, but now the stars aren't interested, not enough $$, and they're all afraid they wouldn't win and be embarrassed. Look at OBD, SOFT as a pillow, a 3 is their favorite shot. Of course they can't defend it, but they can't defend in the paint either.
Jon Joseph Moderator No. 12 Share Posted Sunday at 04:03 PM Draymond's a guy who should have played hockey. Back in the day, I watched UNLV routinely put up 90 and often 100 points with no 3-point line. The line did in part what it was intended to do, unclog the lane. But at what cost? The NBA games look like a game of H-O-R-S-E. Players can hit 3s but not mid-range jump shots?

Which is why I don't watch basketball these days. I root for the Ducks, but when they're playing I just check the score about every half hour. That's it. 2
