Unequal Revenue Shares Based on Viewership In Part, Are Coming

Recommended Posts

As this CBS article on the ACC settlement with Clemson and FSU so notes, unequal revenue shares are on the way, likely to all conferences.

The ACC was already giving the winners of moneyball sports a bigger slice of the pie. Now teams with more viewers will receive more revenue. The settlement also fixes smaller but still significant, exit fees.

The ACC is saved at least in the short run if not through 2036.

First in line for the next media negotiations is the B1G in 2030. The SEC's deal with ESPN runs through 2034.

As the article so notes, Scott handing USC equal revenue rations was the inception of the Pac-12's fall.

Florida State and Clemson’s legal battle with the ACC has come to an end, but the new settlement could have major implications for the future of the conference.

A smaller revenue share may not make Northwestern and Purdue happy, but they would still be B1G members.

I do not believe that the ACC is saved until 2036.  Clemson and Florida State won in the settlement and the A CC lost.

Teams can now leave the conference for under $100 million. Before the amount approached $500 million. In today’s environment of CFB $100 million is “affordable”.

The ACC is held back by the teams at the bottom of the conference. I believe that FSU and CU will bolt from the ACC in 2027-2028 prior to the next round of media contracts in the SEC and B1G.

The ACC, somewhat like the Pac12, did too little too late and made mistakes which will most likely become fatal to the conference.

Them winds they are a changing.

It seems like 2029-2031 will be an interesting time.

TV contract expiration.

Mountain West expires 2025-26.

B1G TEN is the 2029-30 school year.

Big 12 is the 2030-31 school year.

AAC is the 2031-32 school year.

SEC is the 2033-34 school year.

The SEC is the SEC, but being last might not be a great place to be.  I also don't think 10+ year contracts are going to happen again.  B1G TEN did a 6 year contract.  That seems like about right.

The ACC settlement sets it up, so teams can leave.  It will still hurt, but not as much.
