Why Do I Keep Hearing About Kyle Whittingham to Michigan?

Featured Replies

No.

Seems like nonsense to me, but it's a rumor that keeps popping up. I don't see it, as the man is in his sixties, and coming off twenty one years as the head coach at Utah. A program he led with dignity, and transitioned from a G5 to P5, and now P4 member, quite successfully.

Would he really want to jump into that mess? I get the resources, but who knows who's in charge up there.

Not sure. He's retiring.

Probably wishful thinking by Michigan homers and pundits. Whittingham is still signed on to work as a sort of consultant for Utah on a part time basis for 2 years after this season. That means he's unlikely to leave the state.

Someone said that Whittingham was open to coaching. It sure it makes sense for Michigan. Maybe 10 years ago…

Maybe people are confusing Whittingham with Dillingham?

Want to find Whit? Park City is one of the Utah ski areas that is open.

He got what he wanted after last season's no-show. He is leaving a ranked football team behind for his buddy, Morgan Scalley, to coach.

He has as much of a chance to be the next coach in Ann Arbor as Conner Stalions. 😁

Reported by The Athletic... (Above)

You never know because coaches have egos...even Whittingham. "What if I had a fully stocked program? Create a legendary defense, and explosive offense for five years...and show everyone how good I really was?"

From Canzano: "People keep asking me if Utah coach Kyle Whittingham would pop up as a candidate at Michigan. Not happening. His retirement is actually a retirement. Whittingham’s last contract extension at Utah didn’t just include a raise — it got him a $1 million retirement bonus, and a promise of free tuition for his grandchildren."

That's what I'd do with his money, age, and reputation. They'll name something after him, I'm sure. But, maybe he wants to see if he can win a title. I remember him saying something about wanting Utah to join the B1G a couple years ago. He might want to see what he can do at a big time program, in one of the big two conferences.

Coach Whittingham said he was stepping down as Utah’s head coach, not that he is retiring.

He is reportedly open to coaching again in the future, according to sources close to him (unlikely Canzo).

In today's mailbag, the Athletic's Stewart Mandel also mentioned that Whit could be interested in the Michigan job.

Stewart also referred to Michigan AD Warde Manuel as a 'dead man walking.' I doubt that playing ball for Saint Bo will save Warde's job.

What do I know, especially when considering the dough? 🤑

Michigan sold its soul to win a championship.

The aftermath of their coach’s mental breakdown will take time, and a lot of money to repair damages. While NIL can buy a team, bringing in a coach that will be up against other BIG recruiting machines seems daunting.

Trying to gain traction at Michigan will not be for the faint of heart. Does Whittingham have the energy to go fight the fight?

If this hire goes sideways, they could become irrelevant for another 5 to 6 years.

Lot you know, DeNunzio, er, JJ.

On3 reports that Michigan is on the cusp of hiring Kyle Whittingham!

My goodness, GAT, win the prediction contest and now this? WOW! 😍

On3 is a $ site, I can't post the article but I believe there will be more to follow that can be posted.

Love when 🤡 emphatically states things 😂

Impossible to imagine a contract at UM being worth a tad more than free in-state tuition for grandchildren.

It’s a weird choice if it happens. If Michigan is really interested in changing their ways (I don’t think they are) this would be about as clean of a dude as they could hire. That being said, the solution is a 66 year old coach that is NIL/Portal reluctant and known for non-explosive offense?

Thanks, Jabba. 66 and not 63, thanks for the correction.

Whit's as fit as the proverbial fiddle and a perfect 'bridge coach' for Michigan, and a hire by AD Warde Manuel's who is trying to save his job.

Four years from now, in 2030, CFB and the Big Ten, with a new media deal kicking in, could be structured very differently from what we see today.

Michigan was instrumental in sinking the B1G's private capital deal, not wanting to be tied to anything through 2046. Not having Michigan, and to a lesser extent, SC, on board with the capital infusion is Tony Petitti's biggest muff to date.

As you so note, Whittingham is squeaky clean. Took Utah to the Rose Bowl, and defeated Bama and Saint Nick in the Sugar Bowl.

No.

He developed an amazing culture at Utah. Will he have time for a culture to take root at a place like UM in 2026? Is he really a bridge guy to infuse a program on the ropes? Guess we might find out.

Whit has had a great career no doubt about it. He also finished the last 2 seasons (2025-26 pending) unranked. I wish him luck if it happens…but not too much luck 😂
