Oh, (oh) Canada.

Women's and Men's teams take down Canada 2-1 in overtime. A sweep of the Canucks for the USA and the first Olympiad in which both the Women's and Men's teams won Gold Medals.

In 1960, I recall watching the USA upsetting Russia 3-2 in the semifinals, the 'Forgotten Miracle' game, before defeating Czechoslovakia 9-4, to win the USA Men's hockey team's first Olympic Gold Medal.

The games were played on an outdoor rink in Squaw Valley, California, with no helmets required to be worn, and the games were broadcast only in black and white.

Two players from Harvard, Billy and Bobby Cleary, played for the USA. I attended the same prep school as did the Cleary brothers, Belmont Hill School, where a photo of the 1960 team was a prominent feature in our locker room.

For many years, Bobby was Harvard's all-time leading scorer. Billy went on to coach the hockey team at Harvard before serving as Harvard's AD from 1990 through 2001.

Upset hockey powers en route to winning hockey gold for 1st time

In the Women's Gold Medal game against Canada, with just over a minute left in regulation, the tying goal was scored by the team captain and Wisconsin Badger, Hilary Knight. Another Badger and the first Black woman to play for the USA team, Laila Edwards, was given an Assist on Hilary's goal.

The player who scored the Golden Goal for the USA Men's team, Jack Hughes, comes from a hockey family. Jack went directly from high school to the NFL. Brothers Quinn and Luke played for Michigan before moving up to the NHL.

The two Gold Medal games won by the USA Men's and Women's teams helped lead the USA to its greatest medal haul in the history of the Winter Olympics.

1st - Norway - 38 Medals - 18 Gold

2nd - United States of America - 33 Medals - 12 Gold

3rd - Italy - 30 Medals - 10 Gold for the host nation.

I like the way that overtime works. Seems that a fair number of hockey games were decided in overtime.

USA Men's team member Brock Nelson's grandfather played on the 1960 Gold Medal team, and his uncle was on the 1980 squad that won the Gold 46 years ago on today's date.

The skating speed of both teams in the Gold Medal game was off the charts.

The skating on TV may have been enhanced a bit by the Olympic rink being 3 feet shorter than the standard NHL rink.

The distance from the blue lines to the end of the rink was the same. Center ice between the blue lines was three feet shorter.

Skating 3 on 3 in OT usually makes for a shorter OT.

Both goaltenders played solid games.

Some New England understatement when it comes to the play of USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck having a 'solid' game.

41 saves today, 4-0 with 1.23 goals against for the tournament. Amazing.

Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington also played a terrific game.

Today, Connor was under siege. There was a lot of Miracle on Ice juju going for the USA today. In every respect except goaltending, Canada outplayed the USA.

Over the spectrum of sports, the QB in football probably has the greatest significance on the outcome of the game. But right up there, if not more important, is a hockey team's goaltender.

Today, the last line of defense, USA goaltender Hellebuyck, was the reason the Red, White, and Blue won the Gold.

I don't know a thing about Hockey, so I very much enjoyed your posts. I cannot believe all the connections you have to all these people. And thanks for pointing out all the Big-10 players on both the Mens and Womens teams.
