Notalot No. 2 Share Posted December 14, 2022 I too was surprised and disappointed with the 2022 defense. The interior linemen had trouble penetrating most opponent's lines. The edge was too often not sealed, and the pass defense struggled among more specific deficits. The coaches called out by the writer have excellent track records. They hit the ground running, had not worked together before, and inherited the players. I felt that too many of the defensive players played below the performance I expected preseason. Possibly I expected too much from those players in anticipation, or I drank too much green koolaid on the hype train? Before calling the coaches out I am willing to give them time and see their defenses materialize. This year's team should have been 11-1 sans bonehead coaching decisions in two games that gave those games away. Eleven wins would be outstanding, and the players and coaches deserve credit. Like DNC, I look forward to see what comes next, but I am not ready to call out coaches Lupoi and Lanning. Go Ducks.
Haywarduck Moderator No. 3 Share Posted December 14, 2022 One thing is for sure and troubling. We were sold a high scoring aggressive offense under MariØ, and got the prevent offense, which led to his downfall with the Oregon fans. With Lanning we were sold a Havoc defense, and have a prevent defense that is an emasculated version of what we expected. With MarØ we had the vast majority of fans giving him grace and understanding with the most used excuse, he just needs time. Now we have Coach Lanning giving us the bait and switch with his defense with, again, an understanding fanbase, for the most part. I definitely see a culture Lanning inherited which needs to change. Is this what is holding the defense back. It may also be having the right guys, and we can wait and see if that is it. Some ponder if Tosh is the problem, or maybe a position coach? I suppose we will just have to wait and see how it all plays out. For now there is cause for concern, but the jury is still out on just what is happening with the bait and switch we see happening this time. 1

When you get paid that type of money and field the worst defense since Brady Hoke in 2016, then questions are fair game. Could all the blame be on the players? Maybe be and it's a fair question. Another fair question... Is why these highly regarded, highly paid coaches took the most highly rated defensive talent we have ever had at Oregon and had such a poor defense? I don't claim to have the answers to all the questions. But I know they need to figure out how to field a better unit next year based on the talent Oregon has and the serious money they are being paid. I think that is fine for you, if that is what you want...but don't expect the rest of us to do the same. At FishDuck we are not "suck-ups" to the coaching staff in order to gain access. We give credit where due, and give grief when it is deserved. And it is deserved... Dazed did not say he was giving up on the coaches, nor I. However it makes sense to point things out, ask some major questions, and watch for that progress and write about it here. These questions will add to the drama and our entertainment this spring and fall, and I'm grateful for all the writers who do Critical Analysis at FishDuck.com. 1 1 1 2 Mr. FishDuck

Additionally, the defense, and lack of readiness, and adjustment against: Georgia, UW, and OSU, is……….unacceptable! OregonDucks No. 7 Share Posted December 15, 2022 No one, that I have seen, on FishDuck is calling for Lanning (or Tosh) to be fired. Some are questioning a few of their decisions this past year. Isn’t this what message boards are for - to have discussions? I have certainly learned a lot from this site, which has made watching the games more enjoyable.
Just Ducky No. 8 Share Posted December 15, 2022 As I reviewed the 4th quarter of the Civil War. It was clear our defense was in a prevent to win defense, which by the way is played at the end of most nfl games, and playing on their heels. I sure wasn’t expecting that when all we heard from the coaches early spring was how they were going to cause havoc. It was exactly the opposite.
