"Zero" Chance Lanning Leaves Oregon Now

Bryan Bennett Marcus Mariotta Jake Rodrigues Jeff Lockie Damion Hobbs Morgan Mahalak Travis Jonsen Tristen Wallace Terry Wilson Justin Herbert Much has been written about Mariotta finding his way to Oregon; and, it certainly was helpful having Herbert playing football right down the road from Autzen; but, those QBs brought in otherwise? QB is of course notoriously a tough spot to evaluate; but, I would say still safe to question the "great evaluator" tag? Among Rodrigues, Mahalak, and Jonsen, really important spot to whiff. Even in the Herbert year, flipping Tristen Wallace from Ohio State was the bigger splash after Seth Green decommitted to Minnesota (himself an eventual QB washout who ended up as a sort of hybrid WR/RB at UM). Wallace of course quickly ends up in some hot water and turns into a WR at Prairie View A&M. [ If one wants to throw in Daryle Hawkins and Green, you find five recruits brought in for a look at QB who ultimately ended up college WRs, TEs, or hybrid ball carriers (Hawkins, Hobbs, Jonsen, Wallace, and Green). 5 out of 12 QB recruits (42%) turning in college receivers just seems an odd number in evaluating how well someone has done recruiting QBs ] Without VA, it is quite possible Helfrich struggles to even make it to 2016. "Penthouse to the outhouse" style collapse in a single season doesn't appear to have been impossible. 🫤

Completely agree. I am hoping for a 8 - 10 finish in the FIRST reveal Tuesday to light that fire.

Oregon is OUT of the National Spotlight....Good?

There is a fair chance our lackluster performance vs Indiana was partially due to two weeks of the young team absorbing the hype we got after beating Penn State. So, yeah definitely less risk with us being undervalued vs.the alternative glowing adulation.

I believe if OBD wins out and finishes the regular season at 11-1 we will be in the playoffs. I refuse to worry about the idiot pundits that are associated with ESPN.

Amen, Duck-Brother. In the end...it is just our opinions, and we are all free to share them here. Once in a while I see a post where I have to bite my lip to restrain myself, and follow my own rules. But the opposite is the norm; every day I am learning from all of you. Recently we have had some epic threads of really well thought-out, and reasoned posts. Are they right? Will their thoughts come to pass? Who knows? But it darned fun to ponder about the points that so many of the wonderful members of the forum present. Not a large community, but an elite one--especially in terms of civility and decorum. And all the great readers of this forum!

Oregon is OUT of the National Spotlight....Good?

In the early season, and especially after the Penn State game....Oregon was the toast of college football. The buzz about the team, Dante Moore--all of it was now much worse than I realized at the time. It is hard to not get full-of-yourself with that kind of fawning media attention. Even though we were used to the spotlight last year...Our Beloved Ducks are not accustomed to being in cross-hairs of national media the way a few teams such as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are. It is routine for them, while Oregon is still a little thrilled to be spoken of so dearly. Now...the attention on Oregon has faded almost as fast as viable HC candidates for Beavis. Well OK, not that much. But you get the idea; in the Tuesday ESPN Playoff Projection for next week--multiple pundits predicted that Oregon will drop in the Playoff standings, with a danger of not even being in the projections, as anything below 11th puts you out. (The Group-of-Six get the 12th spot) And frankly...our remaining schedule is tough, but not enough to impress--even if we win them. So already I can sense millions of CFB fans writing off the Ducks, and I think this is the perfect scenario that puts a-chip-on-our-shoulder. It can inspire our players to improve beyond what anyone could project for Oregon. It's happened before! Agree? The media has no use for us now...

Two Big-10 Championships Already! A Cross Country OBD Sweep

OREGON ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2025 CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD | @OregonTF Big Ten Sweep in East Lansing The Men and Women of Oregon are the 2025 Big Ten Cross Country champions. EAST LANSING, Mich. — Oregon swept the team titles at the 2025 Big Ten Cross Country Championships Friday morning at the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Women of Oregon successfully defended their Big Ten title from a season ago while the UO men won their first conference title in cross country since 2008. Individually, the Ducks also collected a pair of titles with first-place performances from Abdel Laadjel for the men and Diana Cherotich for the women. Friday is the first time Oregon has swept conference team and individual titles in the same season since 1988. It’s also the first team sweep for Oregon since 1995. With Friday’s efforts, Oregon has now won 29 conference cross country titles—17 men, 12 women—in program history. Laadjel is the 10th Oregon man to win a cross country title and Cherotich becomes the ninth UO woman to run to an individual crown at a conference meet. Dating back to the indoor meet this past winter, the Men of Oregon have won three-consecutive Big Ten team titles while the Women of Oregon also secured their third Big Ten title. Oregon has now won six of eight conference titles in cross country and track and field since joining the Big Ten. How It Happened: Leading from the first 1K split of the race, the UO men placed eight inside the top 20 including first-team performances from Laadjel, Michigan native Evan Bishop in fourth place and Aiden Smith in sixth overall. The Ducks placed five on the All-Big Ten Second Team—spots 11 through 20—with Benjamin Balazs (12th place), Connor Burns (13), Simeon Birnbaum (17), Tayson Echohawk (19) and Jack Meier (20). Meier also earned a spot on the all-freshman team. Laadjel is the Ducks first conference champion on the men’s side since Edward Cheserek won four in a row from 2013-16. Laadjel (23:11.6) held a spot inside the top four at every split point and over the final 1K ran clear of the field, crossing seven seconds ahead of runner-up Riley Hough of Michigan State. Oregon snapped Wisconsin’s seven-year run of Big Ten cross country titles. In the second race of the day, the Women of Oregon turned in a record-breaking collective effort with a meet-record 18 team score. The Ducks put their top six inside the top nine of the women’s 6K. Cherotich led the team’s 1-2-3 finish with her winning time of 19:31.3, followed by teammates Juliet Cherubet and Silan Ayyildiz in second and third, respectively. The previous Big Ten meet scoring record of 22 points was set by Wisconsin in 1985. Dalia Frias was Oregon’s fourth runner across the finish line, good for a fifth-place finish. This is her first cross country season since 2022. Mia Barnett matched her seventh-place showing from a year ago while Anika Thompson was a career-high ninth place. Not only that, but the women set a BIG record with 18 points finishing 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 & 9 (non scoring). 15 is a perfect score. First place went to a freshman, second place to a junior and fifth to a sophomore.

		Review: Run Defense vs Wisconsin

The MINT needs fast linebackers who can cover side to side well, an elite edge rusher, and a freak at the STAR position...Safety with Linebacker/run stopper skills, that can cover like a corner. Georgia (Lanning's last season there as DC, blew out Alabama in NCG) had a roster full of early round NFL draftees. Mateo fits that but not sure the others, though really good, are quite at that level. As Spartan said above, shutting down the short passing game is a goal, and the talent assembled in the secondary should be exciting for Duck fans, they are all very young. Our 5 star frosh Safety is out this year with a broken leg. So, it's somewhat of a bend-don't-break in the run game. Lanning and staff get elite interior DLine and LB's where a 4-man rush can create QB pressure, it will work better. For now, my bigger concern...the offense needs to improve against the better teams...Dante needs to grow and recognize the pressures, which will come with experience as others have noted on this forum. Nix and Gabriel were the most veteran college QBs in history. But...Dante makes throws many NFL QB's can't, and pro scouts have noticed! This season has room to grow and could yet be special. Next year could be even more so with a big recruit class finish and continued portal use, which Lanning has done as good as any team. Offensive tackles need to be more consistent.

Really annoying that the channels went away at the same time the email was sent. Also, I blame Disney for this. They're trying to push their streaming service. It won't get me. I refuse to watch commercials, so if the only way to watch sports is being force-fed ads, I may do the unthinkable and give up sports (at least watching them).

Heads Up For You Tube TV streamers

Below is the email I received from YouTube TV about this matter yesterday. (original links removed) In order to deliver a wide variety of sports, news, and entertainment programming on YouTube TV, we enter into agreements with network partners. Each time we renew our contracts with these partners, we advocate for fair pricing and greater flexibility to offer our subscribers the best possible live TV experience. Our current agreement with Disney has approached its renewal date, and we will not agree to terms that disadvantage our members while benefiting Disney’s own live TV products. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to reach a fair deal, and starting today, October 30, 2025, Disney programming will not be available on YouTube TV. This means you will no longer be able to watch channels like ABC and ESPN or access recordings from these networks in your Library. We know how disruptive it is to lose channels you enjoy, which is why it’s our goal to bring Disney content back to YouTube TV. We’re committed to continuing to work with Disney to reach an agreement, but if their content is unavailable for an extended period of time, we’ll offer our subscribers a $20 credit. You can continue to watch Disney’s sports programming by signing up for ESPN directly. For more information on the impact to our 4K Plus and Spanish Plus add-ons, please visit our Help Center. Thank you for your patience as we continue to advocate on behalf of our subscribers and work towards a new agreement with Disney. We will continue to update our Help Center with the latest. As always, family managers have the ability to cancel anytime. We appreciate your YouTube TV membership. Sincerely, The YouTube TV team

Hoist on his own petard! 🤪🤑🤬 The LSU AD, Scott Woodward, has been terminated. He's the same guy who hired Jimbo at A&M and believed a Boston Irish guy would be a fit in Red Stick. Holy Huey Long! Woodward was fired at the request of the Louisiana governor, Jeff Landry. Does any successful coach, other than Ed Orgeron, want to play politics in the Pelican state? 😁 This makes jobs in Seattle and Oxford, Mississippi, look just dreamy. 😇

		Review: Run Defense vs Wisconsin

WOW! Thank you, Mike. Even I, with limited Xs and Os knowledge, 'got' this. Wisconsin has not quit on its coach, and the weatherman was kind to a Badgers team with a solid run defense. As is often the case with suspect teams in mega-conferences, Wisconsin, especially, and Rutgers and Purdue were handed tough schedules. And Wisconsin played a road game at Bama and Purdue at Notre Dame. When the 'down teams' have difficult 9-game conference schedules, it exacerbates the weakness of the conference, especially in the final season of an ACC and SEC 8-game confrence schedule. Great comment Spartan, but seven B1G teams are ranked in the Massey Poll's top 25: Ohio State, Indiana, OBD, Michigan, Iowa, UW, and USC, plus No. 29 Illinois and No. 31 Nebraska. I believe the B1G is the 2nd strongest conference in CFB, and that the gap between the Big Ten and the SEC is not what ESPN would have you believe. For example, I don't think Texas' 38-point comeback against Mississippi State last Saturday means both teams are terrific. A Kentucky team that Texas also defeated in OT is not a good team. And Arkansas, Auburn, and South Carolina are not all that. OBD fails to cover against Wisconsin in a monsoon and is, of course, overrated. Ole Miss defeats Wazzu by three points in Oxford, crickets. UVA is No. 15 with OT wins over an FSU team that is 0-4 in ACC play, and a UNC team that has not won a football game. The Cavaliers defeated Wazzu at home by two points. Conference wins in the B1G just mean less. Conference losses just mean more. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that ESPN isn't following me!😁 The Establishment is going to push back against the over-the-top love for the B1G because of back to back titles. And I get this. But I also believe that B1G is experiencing pushback as the result of the Tony Petitti's AQ Playoff format. The B1G adulation disappeared when Tony's plan was revealed. And disappeared further when Greg Sankey stabbed Tony in his PO back. A pathetic Penn State does not help the B1G Cause. Cincinnati's loss to Nebraska seems to matter little. Iowa's 3-point walk-off field goal loss at Iowa State matters, as does Iowa's 5-point loss to the team ranked second in the Coaches' and AP Polls. UW lost to the No. 1 team at home and to a ranked Michigan team in the Big House. The Athletic's Stewart Mandel says this means UW's schedule is 'tainted.' The Clemson meltdown does not appear to have hurt the nation's perception of Georgia Tech, Miami, UVA, and Louisville. Mike, I apologize for drifting away from your most excellent post, and Spartan, especially based on the human polls before the committee's first ranking release Tuesday night, your take is certainly not wrong. I believe, like last season, the B1G will show up in the postseason and we'll see more of a 3-loss Illinois defeating 3-loss South Carolina, a five-loss Michigan without a passing attack and half of the starting defense sitting out defeating a 3-loss Bama, and a marginal USC team defeating A&M. I also note that Iowa lost by 3 points to a favored Missouri team and TOSU defeated two highly ranked SEC opponents. Thanks again, Mike, for a super informative post.
