I threw my little tantrum about halftime of the game, and then realized that the outcome has very little bearing on my over all life. I then could only laugh and shake my head everytime something went sideways in the game. I realized that the football team from Indiana was using all their luck up, (such as when they fumbled, then recovered it after bouncing off their own linemans arms.....) I am already getting excited for next year, only concern is Dante Moore. I realize he is very young, has less then 25 starts, and hope he returns so he can learn and get much better. Ideally for 2 more years, but i don't see that happening.

The rumors ended up being true. Sounds like he's willing to sit behind Dante for a year if necessary. If he's willing to be patient then so am I. Now let's see if Dante stays! The answer seems pretty obvious to me. Sure, the Ducks lost a handful of guys who would have played valuable roles on next year's team, and replacing them won't be easy. But they also got a foursome of potential first and second-round picks to agree to come back for one more year. That's not easy to do, and the upside that it brings to this defense is immeasurable.

In terms of two deep, offensively so far so good (though Perry would probably have been considered part of the two deep at WR). Defensively, I've got several depatures off the two deep. Purchase and Porter at DE and Jack LB, Gray at DT, Austin at NB, and Laulea at CB. I imagine the staff would have liked to hold onto Jericho Johnson too (but that is just a hunch). It is just college football at this moment. Teams at or above "blue chip" roster levels (50% or better 4/5 stars) have typically seen departures of young players in the NIL/portal era so far, this year: Ohio State 29, Michigan 27, LSU 32, Texas 22, Alabama 21, Oklahoma 25, USC 20, and so on. I didn't study it, but I would imagine part of the reason USC took 35 commits, Georgia 30, ND 29, tOSU 28, Miami 30, Florida State 33, Tennessee 27 was a "net negative" portal flow the last couple cycles. 25 leaving Oregon won't be that bad if that's the bulk of it (I've got 22 if we are just counting players listed as commits and not from all 105 but it's been a wild day so I might have missed somebody). Overall, running the current roster as of tonight (plus the incoming recruits), I think Oregon's "blue chip" ratio actual has crept up two points. I think the bigger issue to watch is if Oregon can find sufficient guys in the portal to get its roster numbers where it probably would like them to be. I imagine the staff would still like to be at or over 85 (not counting "invite/walk-on" guys like Grace, Quinn, and Wiepert who make the whole 105). With the two additions and new commits, I think the number is currently 73? Finding and landing 11-12 or more will be interesting to watch.

One beautiful aspect of sports is that our teams don't always win. Just like life. It gives us a chance to reflect and grow. We are not bad people because OBD lost to Indiana, nor were we inherently better when we zeroed Texas Tech. Life simply goes on. With that said, I'd love it if there were zero opportunities for reflection next year. Go Ducks!

25% churn is the new norm for a healthy program.

I’m more surprised anyone would be surprised by this…pretty sure there weren’t any shenanigans or Duck fans getting outfoxed for tickets. Is there an example of a game east of the Mississippi where we ever had even 25% in the stands? For an old PAC school, I’d say we travel decently overall, but nothing compared to what most B1G do.

Only 40 to 50 % entering portal continue playing football. Only 25 to 30% stay at D1 level.

My understanding is that before entering the portal players meet with coach Lanning. I suspect that he is totally honest about their prospects of playing time. He may even say: “Sorry it didn’t work out for you. You’re going to have a better chance of getting on the field at a different school.” The coaching staff must make room for players who can make major contributions.

In addition to the Indiana out-bound number being low due to their continuing portal window dates as a result of them still scheduled for a game, another factor is in play. They have a lot of mature guys whose college playing careers will end at that last game. They have no more eligibility to use if they enter the portal. So, they have a bunch of guys who won't be portal eligible. As a result, in Indiana's case, the number to monitor will be in-bound transfers and recruiting. So far, they have a combined 22 recruits and 12 in-transfers. They will likely be seeking more in-bound transfers to offset the losses of guys who won't be back or going anywhere else.

I don't think the strategy was in place for playing the best teams in college football in the playoffs either year. That is the big one. How you play JMU is not how you play Indiana. To play Indiana, you have to play a little 'not to lose' and try to hang around for a while. While still taking calculated risks. Since training camp, some players have been getting hurt in practice. Why wasn't Luke Moga put in, who has better running ability? Why could they not stop the run inside their own 10 yard line? No excuse for the blocked punt. I think there are a lot of questions that could be asked, but when you get right down to it, the players were beaten by better players. But yes, I was expecting a much SMARTER effort vs Indiana, which I did not see enough of. And considering how they lost to Ohio St last year, they should have hung in there later vs Indiana instead of getting blown out so badly. That 4th down call did not look like a smart call. But Dan Lanning has a lot to learn as a head coach. He is getting most of it right. Now we just have to wait until next January. I think next year will be different. And I expect Indiana to take a giant step back even more than Michigan did.

I suppose I shouldn't be cynical, but when I look at that portal list of out-bound announcements I'm reminded of all those guys within that list who when recruited said, "I chose it because it was my dream school." And, that list isn't final yet for 2026. And, 2027 will bring another list of guys who maybe stuck around for one more year before leaving their "dream school." Crazy.

As of early this Sunday, these were "into-portal" numbers for the top conference standings: 7 - Indiana - still have a game Jan. 19 which affects when their portal ends later 29 - Ohio St 15 - Oregon (more now - others may get higher too) 27 - Michigan 20 - USC other teams which lost coaches: 36 Michigan St, 49 Penn St As of Saturday, yesterday, some from the SEC: Auburn – 36 Arkansas – 35 Mississippi State – 34 LSU – 32 Florida – 30 Tennessee – 25 Oklahoma – 25 Missouri – 24 Texas – 22 Those SEC teams already have a good start on replacements over "late players" like Oregon. But still, they had to deal with the disruption. No wonder Saban retired. He was 3-3 in CFP championships. How many of those 6 games might have fallen off the radar if he had been busy replacing players due to the portal?

Every year we have massive portal transfers of those who did not start, and we get highly experienced great players who portal transfer in. Charles yoir right, and this isnt a complaint at all, hard to keep it rolling 25 players would represent what 20 to 25 percent of the roster, crazy numbers, this is quite a bit more then what the average teams are loosing. Just saying red flag? Perhaps? Maybe not? But thats a ton of depth off the roster either way. I hate seeing kids jumping ship like this, it iddnt help our RB depth in the end while still playing. Just an opinion or obervation

Dan always recruits a boatload of edge rushers, and let's the chips fall. But Gray to me is a loss, as I saw a big future for him at Oregon.

For perspective, the season team total plays snaps: 988 offense, 932 defense (15 games). So, Purchase would have been on the field for 352/932 = 37.8% of the snaps. All defensive players: 879 snaps out of 10,252 (932x11players) = 8.6%. All offensive players: 621 snaps out of 10,868 (988x11players) = 5.7% But, keep in mind those small percentages are just players who are in the portal. Seniors who played and are graduating would have to be added if you were calculating the total amount of snap experience not returning next season. But, Charles point still applies: the portal guys (not the graduating guys) may have been able to help next year, but they were seeking a guarantee of playing time they didn't have this season.
