Here's a Thought, Saban isn't Done Coaching
Come on Greg! Saint Nick hates the pay-for-play new game. He's wealthy and has his businesses, including being the biggest Mercedes dealer in Alabama, to attend to. He's retired in no state income tax Florida and golfing his ball whenever he wants to. He is still in the game with his Gameday gig that won him an Emmy. I've heard that Greg is coming out of retirement to suit up for the Birmingham Stallions.😁 It's a looooong off season.

Way Too Early, But Anyone Going to the Iowa Game?
One of the "fun things" about road game attendance is near-stadium atmosphere. Personally, a visit to The Grove at Ole Miss would attract me. There are other on-campus stadiums, near campus business districts, that are attractive. One aspect of Iowa's on-campus stadium is that it is close to residential neighborhoods. Season ticket holders often rent parking spaces on the front lawns of homes nearby. If you are invited to a tailgate, your host may tell you, "we're at 223 Melrose Dr." The home owner rents the space, and may provide a porta-potty as part of the annual rent for the Saturday renters, water, electricity hookup. The stadium is "walking distance" from downtown for those reasonably fit. But, if you are going and have a car I would suggest you do some research on parking. A lot of these B1G stadiums are so old they are surrounded by other development rather than being at the edge of town with parking lots. The last two November 8's in Iowa City were 55 degrees. But, you can't count on that.

Neville and Reitz MLB Draft, Selected on Second Day
Great for Neville and Lurch. Some team is going to get a great pick in Jacob Walsh and what about Grinsell?

Way Too Early, But Anyone Going to the Iowa Game?
Woody Hayes, Ohio State, 1951-78 (205 wins) Kirk Ferentz, Iowa, 1999-present (204) Amos Alonzo Stagg, Chicago, 1896-1932 (199) Bo Schembechler, Michigan, 1969-89 (194) Joe Paterno, Penn State, 1993-2011 (162) Hayden Fry, Iowa, 1979-98 (143) That's total wins as a Big Ten coach, not total Big Ten conference wins. Nor is it career wins at all coaching stops. Average wins per season would be a different list.

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
Nostalgia can be an addictive drug. What I periodically think about is where Oregon would stand in recruiting today if Taggart hadn't shown the Ducks could recruit nationwide, and Cristobal showed it wasn't just a Taggart thing.

Whoa! New Uniforms for 2025, "To Be Discussed and Debated...A LOT"
I'm intrigued about "the kit that will be discussed, like, a lot" Hopefully it won't be for the game on Peacock that I don't have anymore.

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
Helf was a true Oregonian and a fellow coastal boy at that! He coached our only Heisman Trophy winner and led us to the NC game with a massive win over FSU. That may have been our most talented team ever. That said, he whiffed on two DCs and not many coaches survive that. That was not entirely his fault IMHO, I feel like Mullen was being too much of a bean counter instead of just bucking up for the best. Seems he learned that lesson with the hires of Leavitt and Lupoi. Our recruiting was deteriorating as well. Great man, great football mind, but just not a great HC. If he were coaching the rodents he'd still be there. We just have a higher standard.

The Oregon Ducks center fielder was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round with the No. 114 overall pick The third unanimous All-America selection in UO history, Neville tied for the national lead in home runs (26) and hit .290, had a program record .724 slugging percentage and tied for the school record with 67 runs scored. Oh, this is such a sweet memory of the past, so many players, so many great plays...for the Rose Bowl!

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
My lasting image of Helfrich is that the chair he sat in for their post game interviews was too big for him. He wasn't hired because Oregon thought he was a great head coach; he was just as close to Chip as there was going to be. It was unfair but Helfrich took the job, and it worked for a while, but the gas ran out and was running on fumes. He might have been able to get it going but I think it was the right decision to move on.

Way Too Early, But Anyone Going to the Iowa Game?
If you are in Iowa City on November 8th, bring warm clothing. If there, you will see in person the winningest coach in B1G history. Kirk Ferentz is two wins away from passing Woody Hayes. This is Kirk's 27th season at Iowa. Looking at the average per-season win totals, Dan, now in his 4th season, should pass Ferentz before the 2048 season. 😁

Lanning's Take on the New Trend of Hiring Football GMs
Thank you, Stevan. Malchow was a terrific hire by Dan Lanning. But unlike the situation at SC, he wasn't brought in to rescue recruiting, or fire the HC at Stanford like Andrew Luck, or win a power struggle at Cal, Rivera over Wilcox, with every quality Cal player transferring out. Or to prop up six-time Super Bowl winner and $10 million a year man, Bill Belichick, at UNC. I see many of these GMs being brought in to patch holes that multi-million-dollar coaches can't fix. Recruiting, with the help of heaps of cash, has seemingly been fixed at SC. But the newbies have to be coached up; will this happen in South Central? Unfortunately, Luck isn't suiting up for the Cardinal, and Riveria is also out of eligibility at Cal. I don't expect these two programs to ace the ACC anytime soon. And Tom Brady isn't suiting up at QB at UNC. Without Tom Brady, Bill's Super Bowl record at New England is a likely Zip for Zip. Too many cooks ...?

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
Nice Man. An example of The Peter Principle. I wish Coach Mark nothing but the best. One of two Oregon coaches who coached in a national championship game and won a Rose Bowl for OBD. Although the Rose Bowl win was 'this close.' Right, Jameis. 😃

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
I think it would have improved in 2017. I'm sure Hoke would have been fired and Mullens (and Knight) would have had say in the new DC if they opted to keep Helfrich. The reality was that the old guard of the Oregon staff was fast approaching the end of their ability to keep up with all the changes in college football. I had another article almost done on the Taggart year and I have one I started on Cristobal. Those have been interesting to reflect on as well.

Whoa! New Uniforms for 2025, "To Be Discussed and Debated...A LOT"
I'll be honest... I feel like the retros were a little overused for my liking last year. I know some of the greybeards feel differently and I respect that. I also feel that Oregon's uniforms last year had two sets and they didn't really mix well. We had the modern color palette of Oregon with the black, yellow and white and then the retro green and white. The yellow of the retros is just a very different shade and didn't work with the modern look. Personally I'd like a set of uniforms that could be mixed and matched better with a few strictly one-offs.

"Not exactly unprofessional?" How about Rude, Arrogant, Entitled, and a product of today's (un)Social media and Don't You Dare Tread on My Self-Esteem? As to another's self-esteem? Who cares? Good riddance to this kid and his Old Man, too. SMH. Another example of why I'm happy to be on the back nine. There used to be a thing called manners, civility, and respect for your elders. OK. I hope the waving cane didn't hit you.😒

How Should Duck Fans Remember Mark Helfrich?
Mark H was a really good man with a very good offensive mind. He was a victim of circumstances, somewhat beyond his control. I thought his removal was premature, especially with some of the young talent he had amassed..........but it was a matter of "what have you done lately". I was sorry to see him go but the program did improve.....as it might have had Mark stayed as coach.

A lot better than playing Cal or Stanford. Probably a national audience. Against a ranked team. Sellout. I'am jealous.
