Crazy Ending to Michigan State-Nebraska Game
Charles Fischer replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The more I think about it, we need to win Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and we effectively have enough pitchers for three days. So the fourth game, Michigan State,, is a throwaway. Pitch the freshman and those who have very little experience and give them battle pressure for the future. -
This is one of the few advantage of being the #1 seed, I guess, is knowing what you have to do to win and being able to get some backup pitches some tournament experience while starters get some extra days of rest going into the post season.

Oregon is a power in track and field. UCLA has an awesome swimming and volleyball program. Since moving out West I've discovered the passion for football isn't as rabid, but the depth of the athletic programs out here is second to none. I know what water polo is now. The B1G traditionalist probably has no idea what Olympic sports means as far as it goes with collegiate athletes. I really didn't as I primarily care about football and occasionally basketball if the Gators have a great squad. In the SEC many fans do care about swimming, volleyball, softball and baseball along with track and field. But I personally really only pay attention to those things during the Olympics.

Crazy Ending to Michigan State-Nebraska Game
Charles Fischer replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Good gosh…the Michigan State game is truly a throwaway. The result does not matter, so yes, hold Grinsell for Friday. Start freshmen against Michigan State, and no valued relievers? -
You are correct. If the three teams in the pod are tied 1-1, the highest seed advances. Pool A 4:00 pm PT – Tues – Nebraska beat Michigan St (5-4) 4:00 pm – Thurs – Oregon vs Michigan St 4:00 pm – Fri – Oregon vs Nebraska Noon – Sat - Pool A winner vs Pool D winner The Ducks must now definitely beat Nebraska, otherwise the Huskers become 2-0. Theoretically, the Ducks could use their No. 2 pitcher vs Michigan State, and hold their No. 1 pitcher for Nebraska. Especially since the Nebraska pitching staff will have an almost 72 hour rest. But, using No. 1 on Friday means he isn't available at Noon on Saturday. This scheduling seems almost as screwed up as the CFP approach of having 1-4 seeds with the worst opportunity??

Crazy Ending to Michigan State-Nebraska Game
Charles Fischer replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
So if I understand it, and that’s not certain… Regardless of our game with Michigan State, the game with Nebraska decides who goes to the semifinals? Because even if we lost to Michigan State, but beat Nebraska, we would be tied with the cornhuskers, and the Spartans, but would advance as the higher seed. Although… If if we beat the Spartans, and lose to Nebraska and we are tied again with the cornhuskers and would advance automatically? I have not got the rules of all this down yet! -
Michigan State is leading 4-3 over Nebraska, it's the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, runner on 2nd, Nebraska hitter sends a lazy fly ball to left field, Spartan LF has it, then it pops out of his glove, player on 2nd scores, ties it, 4-4. In the bottom of the 10th, Michigan State infield in a shift, but Nebraska's leadoff hitter somehow gets the ball to roll past the 4, 5 & 6 into the OF, two straight strike outs, but the next gets a single, Nebraska scores and wins, 5-4.

The invitational golf match Stanford hosts every year is named The Wally Godwin Invitational. Wally was the coach at Northwestern before he took the job at Stanford. Luke Donald, European Ryder Cup Captain in 2023 and will be the Captain again in 2025, played for Wally at Northwestern. US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick is also a Northwestern graduate. Northwestern Men's team has won the B1G Men's Golf Championship nine times, including the 2024 championship. Stanford won a national championship under Wally. On that team was the Oregon golf coach Casey Martin, Notah Begay, and some guy named Tiger Woods.

B1G Baseball Tournament: Information and a Bad Matchup?
sports fan replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Thanks for contacting the sports information director for baseball and giving us an update on the pitching issues concerning the Ducks and Bruins. As you stated, the tournament would be nice to win but the focus is on the regionals next week. Highly unlikely, but Oregon and UCLA could miss out on the championship game and still be in the regionals. However, all the other schools competing in the tournament have to win out in order to make a regional. For them, I would think it would be all hands on deck and they would use any pitcher at their disposal to possible win it all. -
USC Demands Major Date Change to Keep Notre Dame Rivalry Alive
David Marsh replied to Annie's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Hate to say it but strength of schedule hasn't mattered for awhile... Or has been a myth. The SEC was exposed last year and they just pounded their chest and said the SEC is better by default so all their teams are better... Therefore better strength of schedule. It's all about media hype and number of wins. - Yesterday

USC Demands Major Date Change to Keep Notre Dame Rivalry Alive
JabbaNoBargain replied to Annie's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Sort of? Two strongest conferences get the most teams in. Seems to generally be assumed 10-2 in the SEC/B1G is better than 10-2 in the ACC/B12, but the sample size isn’t large. Would ND ever qualify at 9-3? -

Does strength of schedule even matter anymore, or just the number of wins? -
The Capital One standings are only about how a team finishes in the sport. It has zero to do with conference finishes. Those standings do reflect teams with many sports, but you do have to finish in the top 10 to get any points. Just because a school has 100 sports, it doesn't just give the school points in the standings. The Ducks are one of the best Universities for bang for the buck. Yes, the spring sports will change those standings and likely improve the Ducks rankings.
