  1. As another long time FishDuck fan who had to be reminded not to throw shade, I have come to think of OBDF as a virtual ‘dinner table’ where we can share our Duck thoughts, hopes, dreams, and even nightmares!

My Dad’s firm rule was that you do not discuss religion or politics at the dinner table.  It always leads to a fight because people tend to think their way is THE ONLY WAY!  I too read my posts before posting, and have simply deleted several posts because they could be interpreted differently than intended.

My hat is off to you, Mr. FishDuck, for creating this safe haven for THE MOST KNOWLEDGABLE DUCK FANS on the planet to congregate with friends.

It is my wish that each of you and yours, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  Go Ducks!

I believe in second chances in most instances. I also think that lanning is going to make mistakes along the way. Short leash for Klemm, long leash for lanning kind of thing. With Lanning juggling so much with two programs, I expect some missteps.  Another couple weeks and Oregon will have lanning full attention. Don't think I can expect him to fill his staff quickly to try and salvage recruiting and do it flawlessly.

Agreed LH, let’s give DL a chance to coach.  I like your leash comments.  Let him make mistakes and learn from them.  When he repeats them, it becomes a different story!

  3. Unfortunately, it has become “part of the game” for those schools interested in the super league JJ (rightly) predicts here on OBDF.

It almost killed me when so many years of OBD coaching experience was (were?) shown the door along with Helfrich.

The game, unfortunately, is no longer a game, and as such, is no longer quite as much fun.

And I believe it's the same type we talk about in games. Are you also describing the stress of fear or confidence. That's as real as it gets.

I was thinking about the swings where it seems you can’t do anything wrong for a spurt.  Where runs break free, catches are made and points stack up.

Like when we were looking down the barrel of a 14-0 score from the Utes, and he dropped the ball on the one.  Up to that point, the Utes had momentum.  Everything they tried worked.  That play shifted the momentum and thus the outcome.

While it is as real as momentum, abject fear tends to affect me differently.

I have personally experienced heart pounding momentum. Nothing gets the blood pumping like coming down a logging road sitting on 102k lbs of iron and wood in 2 ft of snow and ice with a 500 ft drop on your left. One slip and momentum builds from there. Wait... wrong kind of momentum. Nevermind.

I know THAT Momentum too!  Got to bring a half loaded rigging truck off Bald Mt. w/no brakes back in 76!  Thats a whole bunch of momentum I wasn’t even think about!  Thanks for the flashback!

  6. I just read this article on and it made me wonder how some of the savviest fans I know of would weigh in in ‘momentum.’

For me, momentum is real, and you can feel it, both when you got it, and when they got it.  It happens in games, battles, war, and even business.  I’ve seen it in grade school, pee wee soccer, high school, college, the Olympic, and even in the professional leagues.  We Duck fans have seen both sides of the momentum coin.

While the article brings back a very painful 2016 bowl game, it does make some good points.

I am curious as to your thoughts, oh fellow OBD fans?

No voice is louder in our own heads than the one that tells us that we were right all along, especially if we can't be proven wrong. And I'll be the first to forget, even on purpose, when I am wrong (if I haven't already spun the first argument to make me right). …

Wow Constitutionalist, you absolutely nailed it with that statement!

A tip of my hat sir, for so eloquently stating why we humans are such an argumentative bunch!

  8. Noah was far and away my favorite player on this year’s squad.  He was an absolute beast!

He left it all on the field every game, he stayed in when he was obviously hurt, and he flew to the ball more than any other player.

He was in or near the tackle on the majority of plays this year.  You could watch opposing player start to shy away from him by the 4th quarter.

Not only did Mario win nothing his way, I'm sorry but a 1 point win over a 3L Wisconsin in a Rose Bowl exhibition game is not a big deal, he put a choke collar on the NFL rookie of the year and had an Epic Fail at ASU.

Jon, I have nothing but respect for most of what you post, and I admire your knowledge of the game.  That said, I just can’t agree with a couple points you keep making on OBD Forum.

First of all, 10-3 was “winning quite a bit, his way”.  The Rose Bowl is still “The Grandaddy of Them All”, and a Rose Bowl win is a win whether it is by 1 point or 50. That 3L Wisconsin team still placed 2nd in their conference.

As far as a choke collar on JH, he shared that distinction with both WT and MH.

I agree that Mario is not (and never will be) an elite coach, but he gave Oregon his all right up til Miami poached him (the week before the 1st Utah game).

He was a hard worker who put in more hours on his job than any of his predecessors.  While I am glad he is gone to the disaster that is The U, I still acknowledge he did some good things for Oregon in his time as a Duck.

This was the other indicator, if not an announcement that things on offense are going to improve.  Am I reading that right?

I think you are reading it right Charles, especially when you add what he said yesterday for context.

“Lanning, who has helped make Georgia's defense arguably the best unit in all of college football the past three years, told the Ducks they will play "championship-level defense … but that doesn't mean we aren't going to air it out on offense."”

We're in for an exciting ride.

There were definitely a few!  Some of the ‘right words” I heard included:

    servant leadership

    relentless pursuit

    attack, nothing passive

    aggressive but disciplined

    explosion plays

recruit elite players and develop them

    a staff of teachers

    perennial winner

  12. I came away feeling good about the trajectory of the team going forward.  I liked a lot of what he said he wants to do, I think he realizes that OREGON is the dream job, and a destination.

I think he stays at Oregon as long as we want him.

It sounded to me like he is willing to keep some of the existing position coaches and that he is willing to listen to advice as he makes staff decisions.

I sense good times on the horizon for Duck fans everywhere.

Being named head coach at Oregon he should be giving up his duties at GA and on to Eugene.

I think it says more about the man that he honors his commitments to the kids he started the year with.  I am pretty sure that allowing him to complete the playoffs with GA was a big reason we got him.

It always ticks me off to see a coach move on for himself and leave his team high and dry.  I think that is putting I before team.  WT an MC both did it, and soured me on them.

  14. I think it was a good hire.  He checks most of the boxes most importantly he has fire in his belly, he is a hard worker, the coaches he’s worked for sing his praises, and his players like playing for him.

I gotta believe he will do fine at Oregon with all the support and amenities that are available.  I am more than willing to trust in OBD and our system of supporting student athletes to usher Coach Lansing into becoming the coach we deserve.

Lets give him the chance, support him while he grows, and see if we can give him the A+ a year from now.
