  1. "Why would he leave?" For a location where the time that has to be devoted to recruiting, and traveling to recruit, and time and distance for assistants to recruit, is more moderate. It was a factor in Kelly, Taggart and Cristobal leaving. Not implying that Oregon is an unattractive recruiting destination, just that the effort of coaches and effects on their families, often wears on coaches to a degree unappreciated by us fans. Building a program that attracts recruits helps. Recruits recruiting other players helps. But doesn't eliminate the time and travel equation for coaching staff.
  2. I always temper my reading of Ken Woody's analysis with the knowledge he was 3-16 in his last head coaching job. I do enjoy Aliotti's analysis on Pac12 Network.
  3. Nick Aliotti, ?, Rich Brooks I believe that is Dwight Roberson.
  4. The two most-watched Ducks games this season have been 3:30 pm ET. That time slot was not just a random selection by the network.
  5. Jon, I was about to post the comment on the Wasserman column as well. He makes a strong argument in favor of DL's play calling and his future potential. DL is 37, this is his first head coaching job. The Athletic is a pay site, though pretty inexpensive if you subscribe during one of their "deals." Has a lot of good stuff on college football.
  6. Would UW/Penix been able to score from 90 yds instead of 53? Maybe. But, starting from 90 yds away creates a different mind set on play selection, and the additional yardage creates an opportunity for more offense screwups such as interceptions, fumbles, sacks allowed, offensive holding, false start. Saving the fake punt? The surprise element against Colorado was due to field position and Colorado setting up for a return. If it had been run in that last 2:16 situation the dawgs would have been coming with a lot of guys trying to block it which would have meant more tacklers in the area of the punter and upback.
  7. What was it, 3 yds for a first down with 2:16 left? Yes, Penix has receivers. Yes, the Ducks secondary was a bit gassed. But, the more yds a competitor is away from scoring, the more opportunities for them to screw up...throw an interception, jump off sides, take a sack, etc. etc. UW may have scored, but they would have had to travel more yds to earn it. Perhaps 90 yds vs 53 yds causes a different mind set when you are trying to catch up. That being said, in the late game last night, Colorado State went 88 yds in the final 33 secs. and scored on a Hail Mary to beat Boise State. As for play calls, I thought Jerry Allen made an interesting comment during the game. Not at the end, but earlier. "Why don't teams run their two-point conversion plays when faced with fourth and short?" It is interesting to contemplate...even if it only forces a competitor to use a timeout.
  8. Good point. If "we" only have value by whom we associate with, that doesn't say much about our own value. Thus, sounds petty to blame the others. And, doesn't that potentially drag down their value to maintain the association for your benefit? The sequence: USC/UCLA - felt dragged down by an association (Pac12) Colorado - bailed while they could still project value on their own UW/UO - options narrowing, chose a lifeboat offer that would be their offer to accept alone, two seats available Arizona - eyelids flirting with Big12, reserved a boat in case a better deal wasn't forthcoming Utah, ASU - jumped from the deck before the ship sank Cal, Stanford - bought a less ocean worthy raft with their stockpile of academic asset tokens WSU, OSU - no tokens, no offers, no lifeboat - so far
  9. The standard Clue game has 324 possible outcomes with 6 characters, 6 weapons, and nine rooms. Imagine 10 characters, 10 rooms and untold weapons? Yet our rodent friends want to jump to the conclusion it was 1 character (Oregon), 1 room (Casanova Center), and 1 weapon (PK). Why? Because it is just easier for the simple minded to focus on one outcome. Don’t want to waste their time considering Miss Scarlet, with a candlestick, in the conservatory. It doesn’t fit their preconceived narrative. They should re-read Wilner again: https://sports360az.com/and-utah-makes-10-how-every-departing-pac-12-school-drove-a-knife-into-the-conference/ Without considering a more comprehensive view they be the ones who succumb to the candlestick.
  10. Francis set the national high school record for the javelin in 1970 while at Pleasant Hill High (Oregon). The record stood for 18 years until it was broken by 1 inch by Art Skipper from Sandy High (Oregon). Francis lost his life in a small plane accident. Skipper lost his life in 2001 near Sandy in a small plane accident. Sam Crouser, Gresham High (Oregon) set a new standard in 2010; but, by then the javelin had been redesigned so it wouldn't travel as far due to safety reasons at track meets.
  11. Another undefeated to consider is Air Force. In their last 3 games, the margin of victory has been impressive. They will not play Fresno State unless both make it to championship game.
  12. I believe 5 freshmen played on defense, one or more plays, vs Stanford...and 10 overall during the game.
  13. Stanford: 107 yds Oregon: 6
  14. Oregon possession time: 1:23 Stanford: 13:37
  15. A David Shaw quarter? We may come to the end of the 1st quarter with Ducks having the ball for 3 plays.
  16. No, but I can hear Jerry & Jorgy on radio about 18-19 secs ahead of TV action.
  17. Well, I think they may be Oregon Taxpayers team. The Beavs athletic dept has taken money the Legislature allocated to OSU, and used it for filling a hole in the AD's budget. And, just this past Thursday AD and President were in front of a Legislative committee in Salem laying the groundwork to ask "for help" which is really code for a hand out.
  18. Maybe not a "surprise" because opponents have been weak, but Kentucky is 5-0....until next game when they play Georgia.
  19. 21-21 at end of regulation: 42 Then, the shootout on a short field. I have no clue, but thought it would be fun to think overtime.
  20. Vegas says Beavs by 3, and 44.5 total. So, that would be 24-21. Utah has to travel for a Friday game. Don't think Smith will let Beavs lose two in a row. But, Whittingham seems to scout opponents very well. Aargh. Utah 36-35 in double OT.
  21. I believe Kirkland's definition of eligibility is slightly in error. Instead, I believe it is: "top four conference champions, followed by some combination of the top six at-large bids and two highest-ranked remaining conference champions. Teams will be ordered based on the College Football Playoff rankings." Result: a Power 5 Champion doesn't necessarily get an "automatic" bid. It still must be strong in the CFP rankings to get an at-large bid. If for example, in 2024, the Mt. West Champ and Conference USA Champ were ranked above the Pac2 Champ, then the Pac2 would go into the draw bin for at-large invites. In that case, they better hope their "resume" of wins exceeds other at-large candidates. College football's 12-team playoff, explained: Start date, how it will work & more to know about new CFP format WWW.SPORTINGNEWS.COM The Sporting News provides a detailed explainer on the College Football Playoff, from start date to format to how it would look in 2022. When the "rule" was developed no one assumed a 5th Power 5 champ would be ranked too low, and thus would be a defacto "automatic." But, that is not how the rule is written. A Mt. West, Sunbelt, MAC champions could be higher and two get the "automatic" spots over a Power5. For example, if the Pac2 champ was ranked No. 15 while the Mt. West and Sunbelt were No. 12 and No. 13, then the Pac2 champ would be fighting for one of the six at-large, and if they were No. 15 would be unlikely to get in.
  22. There is a lengthy Fish Type article in today's The Athletic about formations Stein is using and defensive adjustments that become problematic for opponents. What will make Oregon's offense so tough to stop for Colorado? Film breakdown THEATHLETIC.COM Colorado has gotten all the early-season buzz, but Deion Sanders' Buffaloes face their toughest test yet in defending Oregon. Here's why. It is behind a paywall normally, so not sure this link will work. Long explanation and 19 photos or videos. They type of analysis we've come to expect from The Fish. chuckle
  23. With 18 teams, giving each one annual rival, would mean the other 16 opponents could be split into 8's. For example, Ohio State with annual rival Michigan could play 4 at home, 4 away, in a 9-game (with Michigan) B1G schedule, then flip home and away the following year; then in the third year have a new set of 8 for home and away. Thus, every 4 year player would have a chance to visit every B1G team's home stadium. That's something that does not happen in the SEC where teams can go years without visiting The Swamp, for example. But, the B1G has variation in "rivals." Iowa has Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Historically their main rival is Minnesota. So, would they be willing to give up annual games with the other two? Minnesota has Iowa and Wisconsin, and if matched solely with Iowa, what happens to those two annual games for Wisconsin? Another example, I'm sure Michigan State considers Michigan an annual rival as much as Michigan considers it to be Ohio State. Thus, a one-team annual rival with 8 rotating appears unlikely. Maybe some kind of pods?
  24. After a lot of debate and tinkering due to USC/UCLA the B1G announced the 2024 and 2025 matchups in early June 2023. They went with a "protected game" model for "rivalries" but it had a lot of variation: from 0 protected games for Penn State, 1, 2, for others, and 3 in the case of Iowa. It is doubtful now that Iowa will keep 3, and some others may drop from 2 to 1. Regardless, the months long analysis laid a lot of groundwork for now adding two more members so it shouldn't take as long. Here's what it was: BIG TEN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES EXCITING FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FORMATS FOR 2024 AND 2025 - Big Ten Conference BIGTEN.ORG 2024 Season to Debut Flex Protect Plus Model with no Divisional Format; Nine Intraconference Game Tradition Continues as UCLA and USC Join the Matchups
