    Beautifully explained.

Been wondering all week about that play. So the right side of O line blocks left and the left side blocks right. It’s brilliant. As a defender, having seen Oregon run left with virtually the same pulling OG and OT—you have almost no chance at foreseeing that play.

Thank you for breaking it down.

And to run them back to back within 12 seconds of each other at the end of a quarter. That’s a lot of stress on the defense.

Thanks Eric for explaining how this play works.  Good job with the details!

A good offensive coordinator uses a counter to take advantage of aggressive defensive defenders - especially ones he notices lacking discipline.

Coach Dillingham is blowing my mind with a passing constraint play to his running counter!  Wow, The Counter Tunnel Screen!

Counters are not used over and over as a base play.  However, they are sprung when the defense is set up.  The surprise usually results in long plays or touchdowns.

Buckle up.  I think we're going to see Oregon become an innovative offensive team again!   Hip hip hooray!

Exactly. Constraints aren’t used as frequently as the staple plays, but they’re designed to look like the staples to keep a defense off balance.

What are the statistical marks of success on the pass. Ducks seem to get blown up a lot against faster defenses on the perimeter. This was Tree

This play relies on a ton of deception and undisciplined eyes. Ducks are out numbered 3 to 1. If Stanford safety stays disciplined its not a TD. Safety leaked out to the sideline taking himself out of the play.

Seems Cougs blew this play up. But... I am not an expert or a football coach. Cota scored here, just seems like a low success rate. Curious to how successful it actually is

If my memory serves me, this was the first time we’ve run it this season. I’d have to go back and watch the other games to be sure.

I’m also not in the camp that thinks WSU was just so fast that we couldn’t get a handle on the perimeter. A lot of our early red zone woes were poor blocking and penalties, not necessarily that they were too fast. The Ducks’ first touchdown was on the perimeter.

I'd rather that not ever happen again.  Eventually the comebacks stop coming.  But to do what they did on the road against an inspired-to-play team like Wazzoo Saturday was pretty exciting and impressive.

Thank God Mase Funa had jumped that quick route and made the catch.  It wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't scored.  Oregon had the ball and WSU had no more time outs.  A drop there and - who knows?

Oh you for sure don’t want to make a a habit of having to come back, but having the ability is a welcome sight.

I also don’t imagine Oregon having the same number of mistakes again. Without the amount of those that we had, we’re not talking about a close game. And that’s to take nothing from WSU.

  5. I just want to say how impressed I am with the fight of this team, and them finding a way to win Saturday.

It wasn’t always pretty, and at one time or another, just about every mistake you can think of was made. And WSU, hats off to them, threw just about every trick you can think of at the defense.

It feels like opponents are going to have to be way ahead for the offense to not have the ability to catch up.

I love these postings that help us to understand the nuances of on-field play. The fans really benefit by these.

I remember fans screaming about video postings like this during the Chip Kelly years worried that Oregon's opponents would "learn how to defeat us" by watching them.  I also remember very few teams actually being able to stop that offense, videos or not.

It's not like other college teams don't have their own analyzers for more astute than fans. They don't need these to know what the heck is going on.

Haha if I know what the Ducks are running, so do opposing defensive coaches.

Watching this video (and the RB getting 6 yards)  looked to me like BYU wasn't so much out of position as they were throughly out-matched by Oregon's line.

One could argue Nix should have kept the ball and ran for 10+ yards but it's hard to complain when the effort by the O-line was so dominate. Nothing wrong with 6 yards on a running play when you run right down the throat of the defense.  It's demoralizing.

I get what you mean, and it does look like he could have got the yardage by pulling, but he made the right read. The goal of these zone reads and RPOs is to make a defender wrong. We don’t really want to make them right and then just try to out-athlete them.

You're probably right.  I'm not expert on these things.  My ROKU TV is fairly new (last year's model) but I didn't watch the game.  I guess it's just one more nail in the cable coffin and since we can't receive cable it looks like streaming is going to be the way we have to go for our games as well.

Yeah, I already have to use Sling to see anything on the Pac-12 Network and even then I have to have an add-on that brings the cost up to like $50 a month. So I’d like the Network at least to be on a service that I have anyway. It’ll be interesting to see how they do it though.

And you’re right, that’s probably the future. I heard the stat of like 10 years until streaming is it.

IDK (I don't know).  I heard this morning on Markely & Van Camp there were severe streaming issues with Prime's Thursday Night NFL game.  Pixelating, buffering, screen lock, etc,

Maybe the technology isn't there yet?  I don't know.  And how many fans want to subscribe to Prime?

I think it has more to do with the home equipment, like the streaming device or Wi-Fi router. My picture and sound were good though.

He didn't get beat by the edge rush like he did in the spring - he did have two false starts.

Sala is a better run blocker than pass - run blocking is the strength of the OL. I'd like to pick a back to feature and get him at least 10 carries in the first half, so he gets in a groove. I don't think I'm liking Dillys RB by committee he is known for.

Bucky Irving was the RB that started the game and I think that's because Dilly likes his run-pass ability. I'm pro running Carwell down team's throat as I feel he is our 100 yards a game guy each week if he gets the touches.

I can only think of one time he got beat in the game too. Overall, the offensive line played pretty well. No sacks and no hurries is pretty impressive. Just have to finish those drives.

Sometimes it's in our failures we learn the secrets for success.

If Dan Lanning and Kenny Dillingham are half as bright as we hear they are, they'll learn from this game a lot.  Who knows, maybe the way this game came off will prove to be one of the real keys to success for the Ducks going forward.

There's only two viable options: either the Ducks get better - or they get worse.  I'm betting on the former.

I’m right there with you. I honestly believe that had it been the second game of the season, the Ducks would have looked better. I won’t say they would have won, but I’m not convinced they would have looked as out of sorts.

A game before Georgia would have gone a long way in working out some of the kinks of having new systems. Unfortunately, Georgia served as that game.

None of those other teams have left yet.  I'm hoping saner minds will prevail.  I find it hard to believe Phil Knight would be in favor of Oregon joining a leave of 20 teams based predominately in the Mid-West portion of the country.  He's been working so hard for 40 years to build a Sports Empire out here on the West Coast.

I’m with you. UNLV is in the fastest growing sports city in the nation, and they’re an improving program.

And I do believe that Phil Knight has looked into options in case the Pac doesn’t work out. But we’ve heard he’s reached out to the SEC too.

One of the reasons that I personally feel like it won’t is ESPN. They do not want another premier program to fall to a conference that they don’t get anything out of and I think they’re going to work to make sure it doesn’t happen.

Burke Magnus, President, Programming and Original Content for ESPN, said the deal they’re working on with the Pac has a mechanism for expansion too.

Another great article from you, Coach.  I really enjoy the clarity of your analyses.  You make it so we football nuanced-challenged folks can easily understand the techniques and justifications for play design.  Many thanks.

Question...would the Down-G be used only against this DL gap alignment?

It can actually be run against a variety of fronts. For instance, another way it’s run is when the DE is wider than the TE. In that case the TE gets to the second level and the pulling guard kicks the end out.

  14. The person issue I have with going to the Big Ten, other than wanting the Pac-12 to survive, is the championship. I’m from the mid-west and love that the game is in Vegas. It allows me to make a vacation of it. Why the hell would I want to go to a title game in Indiana? Lol.

On Canzano and Wilner's podcast today, they said that currently all of the memeber want to keep the Pac together, but the reps are doing preliminary work in case that becomes an impossibility.

I also wonder if these rumblings will make ESPN give a better offer, not wanting to let another big program fall to a conference that they have no gain in.

Going bold isnt just for the SEC and BIG. You pull Texas and OU from the SEC to the PAC then 2 things will happen. Fox and other networks will jump in to the bidding war. Then ESPN will up their bid. Go big or go home ..........

I really like your idea of going bold. That’d really be something if they could pull that off.

Either way, I would still go after SDSU and UNLV.  SDSU because of the obvious southern Cali reach, and they’re an ascending program, and UNLV because I think you have to lock down all things Vegas. I’ll beat that horse to death. Quickly growing in the sports world and the Pac should lock it up with the former MGM exec as commissioner.

  16. I would rather the Pac 12 survive and expand with Oregon as the premiere program. The more I hear of USC actively trying to weaken the Pac while also looking to leave just because they have hurt feelings, makes me think it’d be a bigger badge staying than following them.

GK has to have something cooking. Look at where he came from. The fastest growing sports city in the world. I’d have to think that his connections in Vegas help.
