Wasn't Oregon a semifinalist for the Moore Award, not a runner up? The Beavers, were named a finalist which would seem to be even more impressive based on the talent.

I would give major kudos to the beavs for making the finalist round. I hate to say it, but hopefully this new staff can exceed what the beavs did last year. Beating out what the Ducks did last year will be easy in comparison.

    · The offensive line has helped pave the way for the team’s rushing attack, which averages a Pac-12 best 217.3 yards per game and ranks T-12th nationally.

    · The Beavers O-line have given up just 10 sacks, which leads the Pac-12 and is T-2nd nationally.

    · Oregon State’s O-line is paving the way for an incredible 2.9 rush yards before contact, 2nd-most in the nation.

    · The Beavers offensive line has allowed just 40 tackles for loss this season, the second-fewest in the nation.

I guess everyone that didn’t win would be a runner up. But being a finalist for the award doesn’t really point to poor or mediocre o-line play lol. That was my only point about the award though.

I just have a feeling about this coaching staff.  I know I'm wearing green and yellow glasses, but I never had this feeling with the miami coach or the fsu coach.  I was indifferent with Helfrich getting the gig because the team was so loaded, I probably could have coached them to a Pac-12 title.

The only other coach I had this same confident feeling down in my gut with was CK when he got the gig and that turned out pretty darn good.

Man, there’s nothing wrong with wearing the green and yellow glasses! Nothing wrong with a little bit of optimism, and I think yours is justified.

    Thanks for the posting.

This offense has the ability to put up some serious points with what should be above average play from our QB. A veteran laden OL,  receivers and TE’s that could be among the best in the PAC 12 , and running backs that will put up solid numbers. This team oozes potential.

I am optimistic about what these guys will achieve.

I think it’s going to be a hell of an offense. I used to love watching Norvell run it at ASU. The Malzahn offensive family has been my favorite style for a long time.

  4. Like Coach Klemm states, there is nothing wrong with the rotation and swing positions that the previous staff favored, but I’m more on-board with Klemm’s strategy.

An O-line with minimal rotation and players consistently in the same position is advantageous for all of the reasons Coach Klemm points out.

Spring is here and this is what Oregon football fans should be watching for on the offensive side of the ball in...

Hey, everyone! For those of you who don’t know, I’ve recently started writing for Autzen Zoo for FanSided. Charles has been gracious enough to let me post my new articles on the board, and this is the first one.

I’m going to keep visiting the forum to chat ball with you guys too!

All I want to see, no matter the formation is a back like this one that sees a hole and adjusts to it.  Loved watching him play and his back up was not so bad either.

LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner both having great vision and running skills.  Love MadMike videos, was one of the Original staples of Oregon Football and FishDuck.

I have no doubt that we’ll se backs with great vision. Coach Locklyn is going to have them ready. But I don’t think we’ll see many backs like James and Barner, just because Dillingham’s system has traditionally used bigger backs.

The pistol isn't a bad formation... but it is not an every down straight ahead no deviation formation. It needs to be utilized in a varied way that is not predictable. The use of the pistol here gives me hope of it being used correctly.

Lots of teams use the pistol as apart of their overall scheme ... Cristobal wanted to use it like an I-Formation and it didn't work... but that was mostly because it wasn't being used correctly.

I could see it every down but it’d have to be pretty varied. Like Oklahoma in 2013. Or Michigan this past season. Michigan’s offense was pretty effective with it. I can see why Coach Cristobal decided to hired Gattis at Miami.

Thank You Coach for the great article. And thank you Charles for the very helpful 'inserts' that help Coach's article come to life.

Coach, what do you expect we will see this spring? The whole O enchilada on display; or, keeping a lot of the O 'under wraps' before the match-up with UGA?

Jon, I’m not sure what we’ll see out of the spring game. But I’d rather see more out of the offense. It’s cool to “hide” things from your opponent but I think practicing your offense in live game situations really help.

And I do have to ask, what inserts? Everything I see in the article is stuff I put in it lol.

The last example it seemed the RB didn't observe the set gap the play was designed for. Instead of running straight into a wall of defensive players he shifted to the left into a gap which opened up. This would never have been acceptable under the previous coaches expectations. Hopefully we will see our RB's be given the latitude to look for the hole, even when it isn't where designed. That will be a refreshing change, maybe even a hesitation as the hole opens up too? Wow, the possibilities!

These plays also seemed to be set up as RPO's and the qb made some nice decisions. A qb who plays with his head up and reads a defense will also be a nice development. A diversity of options and good decision making will move our program back to an offense feared, not just prevented. Go Coach Kenny, can he bring our offense back, I think so!

Yeah, he definitely took the cutback there.

Also, there are a ton of of RPOs in the system. Coach Moorhead has some cool RPOs out of the pistol in 2020 but they seemed to all go away in 2021.

I'm definitely not a coach but when we used the pistol in under MC it seemed the running back was so far back that it gave the edge rusher time to cut inside and make a tackle or disrupt the running play for no gain.  I'm not real excited about bringing that back but I do trust in KD and DL to use whatever sets and formations are needed to exploit the defense and make our offense explosive again.   Can't wait for spring.

The version that Dillingham uses puts the RB a yard closer. Again, I know that doesn’t sound like much, but things do hit a little quicker.

I don't inherently dislike the Pistol, I believe it can be an effective offense. I don't believe formation was the issue the last few years, I believe it was pace and explosive plays gained from taking shots down the field. So long as we do that, I think we'll fly high. I'm 100% game to watch how KD utilizes it while in Eugene 🙂

It’s looking like you won’t have much to worry about then!

Thanks coach. I really don't understand all the Xs and Os but do a lot of reading and saw in 1 article the reason for the pistol is deception.

Where the RB lines up gives tips to the defense. By putting him directly behind the QB they have no idea which side the play is on.

Also is the pistol brought from Nevada by Mastro the same one your describing?

Yeah, the pistol definitely makes it harder to decide which way the run is going.

Other coaches that use the shotgun will counter this by using same side runs. For example there’s the regular inside zone where the RB crosses the QBs face and the OL is also blocking in that direction, and then there’s the same side IZ where the OL blocks in the direction of the RBs alignment and the RB doesn’t cross the QB.

And it is very similar to what Mastro brought from Nevada. The overall alignment is the same, but the depths are different. Dillingham has his QB at 5 yards and the RB 2 yards behind him. At Oregon, with Mastro, the QB was also at 5 yards but the RB was 3 yards behind him.

That’s actually even different from how Nevada did it when Mastro was there. They were a 4 yard QB depth and the RB was 4 more yards behind that.

I am cautiously optimistic that the Ducks will play an uptempo offense that is effective. Quickly running three plays and then punting obviously doesn’t get it done.

Proclaiming the intent to run 80 offensive plays per game may be somewhat optimistic. His FSU offense averaged 65.5 plays per game, and the Ducks average was 67.6. last year. (I didn’t check time of possession).

When hired at FSU Dillingham stated that he would run a fast paced pro-style offense focused on getting playmakers open.

I hope that his playmakers get open more often this year.

I’m not so sure that the inability of his playmakers to get open at FSU was the cause of the offense’s moments of inconsistency.

Best lol? Not after halftime when the opposing D adjusted, then Willie had no answers.

I only remember that happening in a couple of the games. And the one that stands out is Nebraska. I guess that’s ok when you’ve already scored 42 in the first half lol.

I really wish we could learn what Dillingham means by a "Pro-Style" offense, because I love what he said about explosion plays, getting match-ups and how he wants to create problems for defenses with fast tempo.

Does this mean a fast offense, but under center?  Or "Pro-Style" in terms of the passing offense as you alluded to?

If we can score a boatload of points snapping under center with a sophisticated passing offense, the match-ups and tempo, then I am for it.  I certainly understand that to tell recruits you are running a "Pro-Style" offense to prepare them for the NFL is a great sales point.

I know we won't really know until the games are played, but it is confusing considering Dillingham ran the Spread Offense in the past and the Spread really sets you up for entire-field-attack, bigger running and cutback lanes.

I think this is something I’m going to dive into before long. He used the same line about a fast pro-style while at FSU.

We averaged nearly 50 points a game when Herbert was healthy that year, and even with Burmeister filling in with the losses--we averaged more points in 2017 than the average of Cristobal years.  It was a combo offense of the CK/MH Spread, with a little Pistol and a lot of Taggart's Gulf Coast Offense.  (Which I liked)

Oregon Ducks to hire Kenny Dillingham as new offensive coordinator

Of course I am for any offense that scores a boatload of points!

Right, I’m really excited for Coach Dillingham’s offense but I always wondered why they threw out Taggart’s playbook when he left.

  17. I don’t think I’ve ever brought this up with you guys but I think the best Oregon offense I’ve seen was the one that Willie Taggart ran in his single season with Oregon. One of the things I always wondered about the Coach Cristobal era is why they didn’t keep the offense they were already running, especially because when Herbert was healthy, it looked almost unstoppable.

Of course the answer is that he and Arroyo had a different preference. Perhaps if they had been under Coach Taggart for a couple years, they would have.

I have been an advocate of using the Tight End more for a long time. The NFL seems to understand the matchup problems a good Tight End creates. It is nice to know our new coaching team may recognize the same opportunities. I don't think there is a position with so many scholarship players on the team so underutilized as the Tight End position. It is time to release the beasts!

A qb who is a threat to run stretches the defense and so does a team which uses their Tight Ends as offensive weapons. I look for, once again, an unpredictable offensive scheme which takes advantage of what the defense expects or is in position to shut down. Gone should be the days where Oregon's offense was about lining up and trying to win a predictable battle. I love writing that, and will be extremely excited to see this happen, once again!

I do really like the idea of the TE being used in multiple positions. It will allow the offense to get into different looks without having to sub.

I get the sentiment but the scheme faced a few of the types of offense you’re talking about. Do we need to get to the level of roster that Georgia has to win a national title? Maybe. Do we need it to win another conference title? No.

I’d also say that if you run into an offense with giant linemen that can run in space and a giant RB that can play in space, and they’re play their assignments near perfection, not many defenses are stopping that.
