He needs another perspective from the person responsible for the offense. I don't believe he intervenes as much as some believe.

From what I can tell, the backup QBs that signal the play ate getting the plays from Moorehead.

How often was the pistol used prior to 2021? How often this year? I see that as Moorehead's influence.

Even if I'm wrong about the play caller, Mario needs an OC. The Ducks must have the best OC they can get if Moorehead bails.

I’m with you. I’m almost certain that Coach Cristobal doesn’t intervene in the offense like some people seem to think. I just don’t think that the offenses between Coach Moorhead and Coach Arroyo being as different as they are points to Coach Cristobal telling his OC what to do.

And I know there’s a belief that Coach Moorhead isn’t running non stop tempo because Coach Cristobal doesn’t want him to. But if you look at Coach Moorhead’s past offenses, he’s never been a tempo guy like that.

Of course, Coach Cristobal wants certain things from his offense. Like being predicated on the run. He doesn’t need to force his OC to do that because he hired an OC with the same philosophy. He wouldn’t hire a Mike Leach type coach to run the offense.

  2. Hey everyone, great conversation happening here! I wanted to clear something up, I wrote this with the idea that we would run it if the deal came to fruition, and that’s my fault on getting things mixed up. It’s true that Coach Moorhead has not agreed to be the Akron coach and I really hope that he doesn’t. Wanted to clear that up, and thank you guys for reading.

I will be changing some of the wording of the article to make it more in line with what’s actually going on. Thanks again!

It's gone from rumor to fact... just like that. And just yesterday at his post game interview, Riley made it clear that he was NOT going to be LSU's next coach. The implication was clearly that he was staying at Oklahoma. Not so fast...

Lest we forget, college football is a business, and every coach has his price.

Well he didn’t lie anyway lol

  4. I made it more about the coaches, but I think Coach Saban just had his players in mind. For him, they’re kinda like his kids. Parents yell at their kids for doing things incorrectly, but at the same time they don’t want a stranger calling them a dumb piece of crap for it. That’s where I think he’s coming from.

My take on it was that Saban wasn't telling anybody that they shouldn't be disappointed.

Right, it’s  not about being disappointed. Of course you can be disappointed in a loss. But some take that to an extreme. They want a coach gone who will possibly have won the conference title in three times in four years. They want the QB benched as soon as there’s one bad throw, even if it was a breakdown by the OL. I would say that’s a small portion of fans though.

  6. I think that winning your conference should be the first step of a playoff. It works in the NFL. But I also think for that you need an expanded playoff. Then again, I don’t think that the playoff should be more than 8 teams without reducing the regular season game total.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving to the FishDuck and Oregon Ducks community. As a fan, I am thankful for all of the hard work that the players and coaching staff put in everyday to field the awesome team that we get to watch each weekend! Go Ducks!!!

I admit that i did notice a lack of pistol in the last couple of games, which is good considering how predictable it had become for opposing teams to stop.

This offence is gearing up. Hopefully these last couple of games they will play lights out.

    Cheers.

It’s been pretty much all year. And would have been last season too had the staff been afforded and off-season. That’s because the Shotgun is what Coach Moorhead has designed his offense around.

Thank you for the analysis Coach!

Do you think the Ducks have the type of quarterback needed to run this offense next year?  Or will the offense shift to support the  next chosen QB?

I believe that all of the QBs that we have on the roster have a good skill set for the offense we’re seeing. Each have varying attributes though, but the offense could be successful with any of them.

Great article Eric!  Thanks for dissecting the play!

Question:  If the QB has the TE blocking for him, why not keep the ball as the preferred run?  The TE blocks C gap defender and the QB can proceed attacking the edge.

A pitch to the wide receiver has the sideline for a long gain. The defensive back on that side disappears following the receiver.

Using the speed advantage of the wide receiver would've been awesome.  The field is 53 and 1/3 yards.  Using all of the field will help set up inside plays later.  And vice versa inside plays sets up the outside as this play does so well!

    Great analysis Eric, thanks!

It’s really just about the structure of the play. First level defender is the first read. If he makes a specific choice, you never get to your second level read. It’s designed to create a numbers advantage.

In regards to "angle blocking" scheme versus "root-them-out": look at the Cardwell run for TD against Colorado.  https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=32513494

Ryan Walk has a good block because his man was already inside him (away from the play).  Ryan moves him further away from the play.  That block is easier that trying to move his man backwards.

Combine that with a double team block on the left side and the hole is huge.  The angle that #77 George Moore has enables him to turn the double team and seal off the hole.

Compare that success with the failure against Stanford right before half time.  Or better yet look at all the pistol plunges and the failure to root out the defenders!

Smart versus physical.  Physics beats physical!

To be fair, that play is inside zone though. Cardwell did a really good job of taking a backside gap which allowed the OL to have the angle advantage while still trying to blast a hole through them.

Something that many of us lamented under Cristobal was the loss of the Counter play and others where you use angle to create holes with offensive linemen blocking down, (inside) with others pulling to blow open a hole.

Mario liked a lot of straight ahead, "root-them-out," when that is not always practical against the top teams. The use of the power play beginning last season, and now this double-power using the guard and tight end is a play I LOVE.  Glad to see more of "Moorhead" rolled out, and grateful to Coach Boles for bring it to our attention!

I’d really like to see Coach Moorhead pull out the counter too!

Chip just struggles in rebuilding a program. He was given an ampted up and ready to go Oregon and ran with it. But trying to take a failing program and turn it around... that is very difficult for most coaches and requires a different skill set than what Chip has.

Though here is a follow up question... Moorhead will probably not be at Oregon forever... so how would people feel about Kelly returning to Oregon as OC?

For me, no. And that’s no disrespect to Coach Kelly. Just doesn’t feel like it’d work right. Of course, I do have a little list of OC candidates should that become an issue, but my list of guys that I want to be the OC only consists of Coach Moorhead!

So the reason for Oregon's stagnant offense is HC?...QB?...I'm hesitant to blame the players when it's a groundhog day offense for four years and...Herbert.

Remember Herbert's freshman year being thrown to the lions of purple? He was mauled by a stout D and looked pretty good. His next three years were very pedestrian, aside from the Pac12 championship game...

I know some folks believe that Coach Cristobal tells his OCs what to run. I don’t believe that. The style difference between Coach Moorhead’s and Coach Arroyo’s offenses is great enough that I don’t buy that.

Something that strikes me, and I’m not saying this is you, is that I’ve heard people talk about Coach Kelly’s Bruins offense in a good light, and deservedly so, but the Oregon one poorly. The two offenses are identical statistically. I think the irritating thing is inconsistency. If we were just more consistent in our execution, I think we’d be the top offense in the league.

Also, I would argue that Justin Herbert looked best in Coach Taggart’s offense.

I do believe that the offense has the ability to score more points with better decisions from the QB. Better reads on when to keep the ball would be a solid start.

I will be optimistic that it starts Saturday.

While AB does have some success running, too often, it is obvious that a pitch to his RB would have resulted in a more successful play.

QB runs should result in easy yards and the QB should not be consistently getting pounded with little or no gain. At least I think that is what should happen.

I agree that he has needed to make some better decisions on these speed options. And I think we’re seeing progress there.

The two places you usually see struggles in the option game from QBs are when a QB leans too much on his own athleticism, and then QBs that always seem to hand off when he should be using his feet more.
