Thanks Coach Boles for the analysis and video!

Those linebackers and safety do bite on the fly sweep and especially the mike reading the inside zone blocking of the line.

The multiple ways to attack the defense really uses the speed of Oregon's players.  And is so unpredictable and smarter!

I really like the design of the play, and I wonder if a triple option is in the works from this same look. I thought that’s what it was at first glance.

Thanks Coach. So true that Barkley's are rare indeed. The shoot out with SC in the Rose Bowl was so much fun to watch. Unless you're a DC?

Absolutely no fun at all if you’re a DC! Lol

He's crazy good. Wish he could shake the injury bug he’s dealt with in the NFL. Though as an Eagles fan, I wish for it to be outside of the NFC East!

Another great article. Thank you Coach.

I do note that the RPO seems to work better with McSorley at QB and Barkley at RB?  And being an OC under a hands off HC, James Franklin, also likely helps?

This O was so-so at Mississippi State and it isn't lighting up the Pac-12.

Love the O in theory, but it still comes down to the Jimmies and the Joes.

Love AB's guts. But he is a square peg trying to fit into an RPO role.  Have to make the right decisions and you have to be far better than a 50% passer for the RPO O to really hum.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks for reading!

And honestly, I think most offense work well with generational talent like Barkley lol. Our back are a pretty good duo though, and I’ll be interested to see how the younger backs fill in with Verdell out.

I also believe that the whole Coach Cristobal tells his coordinators what to run is a myth, so I don’t think it’s hard for Coach Moorhead to work for him. But I think my opinion on that is fairly understood around here.

When someone asks that, and we really think about it, the Oregon offense went to much more Shotgun under Coach Moorhead. It would have happened last year, but with no off-season, Moorhead kept the running game from the last scheme intact. If last year had an off-season, you would have seen the offense of now sprinkled with pistol. That doesn’t seem like a HC telling a coordinator what to call. It seems more like one telling an OC that if more of your plays are designed for another alignment, use it.

I also don’t think Coach Cristobal would have called a pass on second down at the end of the last game.

As far as AB, I think his RPO stuff is pretty accurate. It’s his downfield stuff that needs the most improvement. And his decisions on the speed option. Which is not an RPO, despite what announcers say lol.

Great analysis.  Dumb question...in the video, looks like the LB is crashing down to stop the run.  Why is the correct decision not to pull and pass to TE in the flat?  Looks like he would be uncovered.

Not a dumb question at all. The read key is the OLB, but it’s the MLB that’s crashing on the scrape. They also bring a corner of I’m remembering correctly.

I'm new to the RPO scheme of offense.  At first glance I love the multiple ways one can attack.

However, the key is having a QB make good reads and wise decisions quickly!  So far this year we have a 6th year senior making bad reads and wrong decisions.

Coaches have the incredibly important decision to choose wisely.  At this point if Brown is the choice call the exact play.  Don't have him read or make a decision.

But then why use him at QB?

I do understand some of the frustration with Brown’s decisions on option plays, but to be fair, he has shown great decision making on this particular option this year.

Where I’ve noticed he doesn’t make good decisions are in the speed option variety. He calls his number far too often in the speed option than he should. Because of his ability to run, the RB is usually in the better position.

I think this stems back to where he got away with it against Fresno on the last play. He was able to fake the defender on that one and get a TD when the read probably really called for a pitch. Ever since, he has basically tried to do the speed option himself.

Love seeing the defense read and the correct choice being made.

I also love seeing how our offense can be creative, while keeping the defense on their toes. We have to keep the defense guessing, now if we can just add a little more hurry up the defense won't know what hit it!

Yeah, it’s a great package that uses the strengths of the offense well. And tempo could definitely be a nice too, but Coach Moorhead has always kind of done that sometimes up tempo, sometimes check with me type tempo.

  7. I think that with an off-season under his belt with Coach Moorhead, he’ll be really good in the offense. Didn’t he arrive after spring ball was halted this past season?

Also there’s something that I spotted during the game that I really liked. It’s just a small part of one play, but watch the screen pass at 1:10. His body language doesn’t give away that it’s a screen at all. His drop and eyes make it seem like it’s a downfield pass until he throws it to the RB.

Here's what I hope Coach! I don't know if this is a rumor so I would think it might have some substance to it. I hope with all this talent on board with both sides and especially this offense that Mario lets Moorehead actually coach his offense the way he coached it at PS and I guess Mississippi St. This offense could be lethal if Moorehead can just be the play caller for this offense. So Seven will be fun to watch. Mario should Coach the O Line and let our OC do his job. Seems like that has some substance to it.

It looked as if that offense bogged down way to much and I'm pretty sure our OC likes to throw it around and he'll have some talented fire power. Thanks and here's hoping this O takes off like a Duck this year because I was at that Bowl game against Michigan St and it was ugly! So just because we got the talent on D didn't mean that our offense should be looking this sad still when it could look so much better. Thank's Coach.

I’m pretty well on record of not believing that Coach Moorhead was restricted. I don’t really see anything between this past season’s film and the PSU film.

But I do know that people speculate that, and it’ll just have to be something they answer for themselves.

I do think that Mcgee with be a playmaker though!

McGee has a different build than Redd (or your typical Slot guy for that matter). He's short, but that's about where the similarities end. He has a thicker build, much more like a RB than just a wisp that one tries to develop mismatches with in space.

I think you're going to see Seven carry the ball quite a bit. It opens up the play book when he's on the field. You don't know what Coach Moorhead has up his sleeve.

As a RB this kid can bounce, drag step, get small, and look for windows. As a WR he doesn't fight the ball, catches it out away from his frame, and he is a terror in open space.

He's going to be a dynamic playmaker in Oregon's offense. A chunk play waiting to happen.

Eventually he’ll carry the ball more. But while the backfield is crowded, you’ll see him at different spots. They’re going to find a way to get him on the field.

You see Coach Feld kind of tease him about his smaller stature?

The composite ratings at 247 are better than average ratings... they weigh the top players in a class more than those at the bottom.

So if we compare two simple classes, where team A gets players ranked 100, 90, 90, 40, and team B gets 80, 80, 80, 80, team A"s score will be higher even though the averages are the same. And if they each add an 85, then team B's score will go up more than team A's. It's a pretty good system that rewards depth but also acknowledges that top-tier players generally define how well a class does on the field.

Of course it's fair to question any of the inputs that go into that equation: 247, ESPN, or Rivals could be superior or inferior in grading guys out. The Composite at least waters that bias down by diversifying the sources of the ratings.

I like it even better now.

And I was thinking for individual players it was an average between the the three sites, as opposed to team rankings.

  11. I think that Seven Mcgee is going to be a stud in Coach Moorhead’s offense. I think the things he started to do with Redd in the second half of the year is going to expand this season.

When I’m four wide this season, I think Redd will line up as the field slot and Mcgee will be at the tight boundary slot/slot back spot. He’ll be awesome in those jet packages.

  12. The things he touched on, from a scheme standpoint , are pretty much what we’ve been talking about here.

Doesn’t have a base front doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a base defense. It just means that the personnel package that he uses for base allows him to be in different fronts.

He talked about how KT is going to be in the same position that Von Miller was, the joker. Said he won’t be a 4i, which is the down DE.

He gave us new terminology too. The LB/S hybrid that we have been calling the Sam, he calls the star.

An incoming freshman that might be good for this position would be Jonathan Flowe. He is quick has a great pass rush and not sure about his coverage skills but weighing 200 pounds he fits the profile.

He may be a fit. He’d still need the off-season putting on weight. The guy that manned the position at Cal was 235, for example.

Or he could me one of those smaller LBs that just thrive.

I'm not sure his past behavior is an accurate trend for future schemes. I think that he's never had this level of talent playing for him before.  Even for his short stint at Texas A & M, and certainly not at California.

He may treat this defense much more like an NFL defense with more Press on the perimeter and less zone. He has the talent in the front seven to zone blitz and bring pressure that he's never had before.

We shall see. There are a lot of future NFL guys that I see on the Defensive side of the ball.

He just might these "toys" loose next fall.

Maybe, though I’d be pretty surprised if he changed what he’s done philosophically now that he’s at Oregon. Of course I don’t know that for sure. All we have to go on right now is what he’s always done.

And I’m not saying that this is what you mean, but I don’t see zone coverage as a band-aid. Especially when you’re zone blitzing.

    It’ll be fun to watch.

I think Down & Distance as well as how much green grass is behind them, will dictate the personnel grouping(s) here. For example, I like Hill in this Slot against a speed merchant when the offense is starting at its own 20 and the field is tilted against them. Their playbook is wide open and you want your 4.41 guy keeping tabs on their Slot Guy (typically their fastest guy). However as the offense moves the ball and the field tilts, you want the SAM to get bigger/Rangier as the field shrinks towards the Red Zone, and running the ball starts to become more important. The playbook likewise shrinks. Then the Jeffrey Bassa's morph into the Adrian Jackson's as they get closer to the goal line.

    Just a hunch.

This could always be a possibility, but if I’m just going off of game tape, that hasn’t been the case for Coach DeRuyter. From what I’ve seen, he always keeps the same personnel in unless he’s in his 2-4-5 set.

The personnel set in his scheme is what let's him be flexible without having to sub. And I think I maybe led us astray when I listed of safeties that could play the position. The Sam is not a safety, he is a LB that has a safety-like skill set. Think Lamar Winston.

I just wanted to throw out some names like Hill who could put on the weight to play the position. In no way do I realistically think that all of those guys would play the position.

The depth there could be made up of safeties who put on weight and lighter LBs with good coverage ability.

The position also won’t be asked to play man coverage a great deal. The majority of Coach DeRuyter’s defense is zone coverage.

  16. We’ve learned that the Sam LB position in Coach DeRuyter’s defense is a “big safety”. There are a few current players at safety that could fill the spot, including Hill, Williams and Happle.

In another post ChicoDuck also suggested incoming freshman Jeffery Bassa.

The one thing is that all four of these guys would need to put on weight this off-season. Currently, they sit around 200lbs each. You’d like them to be in the 220-225 range.

I also want to take a look at current OLB and see which guys possess more safety-like skill sets.

A voice of reason backed up by facts, and I gotta love it. While it is not the conclusion I want, I must respect yours.  I love learning from others and seeing other opinions, because it makes me reconsider mine such as this example.  In other forums--you would often feel intimidated to voice a "non-popular" view, and thus would not offer it.

This comment by Coach Boles above illustrates how we need to see all opinions, and I appreciate everyone offering theirs.

And that’s not to say that he’s there. He’s not, and he has plenty of room for improvement. But given the situation of the 2020 season, I think we should pump the brakes on tossing him to the side.

Whoever wins the QB competition, I’m here for it.
