  1. I’m glad someone wrote an article on the coaching tree behind the offense that Coach Dillingham is going to run. I briefly mentioned the offense being descendent of the Malzahn offense in a previous article, but this really digs deeper into that.

I’ll add that Morris started using the Malzahn offense when he was still coaching high school — even had Coach Malzahn come in and teach it to his staff. And then seemed to meet with Kelly before his first season at Clemson to learn a few wrinkles.

  2. I think it’s possible that they reach the goal of 80 plays per game. I definitely think tempo will be a key part of the offense, as it has been stretching back to Gus Malzahn.

I think the important thing is alway efficiency. Does the offense score in 12 plays or 6. If they score, they score. If they play efficiently on offense and they score big points in half the goal plays, I don’t think anyone will care all that much.

Watching his junior season highlights (high school), it looks like he doesn't carry the ball "high 'n tight" like he should, yet he didn't have any fumbles in 2021. 🧐🤔🤞

As to a need at RB, I'm in the camp which believes DL is just fostering as much competition at each position as possible. This kid was a 4*, so he's bound to elevate the room. Great move imo.

LeSean McCoy carried it in a similar fashion! It just seems to work for some guys!

His Minnesota video looks like he can run a bit and with good determination.  It appears that the Ducks have added a good one.

I think ... (my wife always suggests I shouldn't do that) ... we have 87 scholarships now.  So 2 to depart still?

I think you’re correct there. Will probably be seeing some departures announced that coaches had already been made aware of.

From a numbers stand point I agree... but in terms of body type this is an insurance measure more than anything else. Right now Oregon has on scholarship...

Byron Cardwell, Sean Dollars and Noah Whittington

Dollars and Whittington are smaller backs that thrive in space but I don't think either is really considered an every down back and neither is a "thumper" either. Cardwell is a bigger back who fits more of the every down bigger back.

So with that said right now Oregon is really one good injury away at runningback from having the season put in jeopardy. Adding another back means there is some depth.

We’ll also have Jordan James on scholarship. And I’m cool with five. That seems around the number we typically keep.

  6. If you look at just the combined net rushing yards between both teams, it would seem like the RBs only rushed for 79 yards.

But the college football, for some reason, still counts sacks against the rushing numbers instead of against the passing.

If you take away the sacks, the RBs rushed for 153 yards on 26 carries, which is good for 5.88 yards per carry.

That’s not bad for a game where passing was the emphasis.

All I know is we are back to preventing the defense from being ready or knowing what is going to happen next. Much better than preventing the offense from excelling. Just look at what taking Seven off the bench has done, getting the ball to Donte, onward and forward!

I am looking forward to saying 'so what, now what' at mistakes this group makes. The opposing defense better be ready for now what, that is for sure. Hopefully the offense also says 'so what' when we go up by 20. I know the team up north better be ready for us to say 'so what' when we are up by 70, 'now what' 80!

And watching Memphis and FSU tape, the spring game wasn’t the half of it!

Yep...I just had some time today finally to comment.  In many respects--Coach Aliotti had it right; it is a G-Series pulling the guard, and sometimes a tackle or tight end.  To me, this new play is more of a sweep than it is a counter--but we can call it anything.  Goodness knows I did that 11 years ago with the Chip Kelly videos!

You can definitely call it whatever you want, I’m sure there are a bunch of different terminology used in coaching for every play.

For instance, as you pointed out, Coach Aliotti called it g-series. I’m assuming he considers any play with a pulling guard in that.

But did you see down-g? That’s something we’ve really never seen at Oregon. I even wrote about it a couple years back, talking about how I wanted Coach Arroyo to add it to the playbook. And they ran it a couple of times during the spring game.

Glad you saw it because I was going to email you for your opinion.  I thought that at first as well, but I ruled out "Counter," because there was not any counter action of the QB and RB going one direction in the backfield to get the linebackers stepping one direction, and the the counter-action in the backfield going the other direction.

We can disagree--no sweat.  But I'll be we will see a GH Counter in the future....and I'll bet it will be enhanced as this play was as well.

I would agree with you that I was mistaken though...that your point and that of others that it is not a sweep is true.  It turned into a sweep due to the actions of the corner coming so far inside.

    So what to name it?

I see what you’re saying with the traditional counter movements of the RB not being present. And the thing is, not every coach does it that way.

Lincoln Riley for example, doesn’t use any counter motion from the RB. He’s just using the counter blocking scheme.

  10. Really enjoyed the article Charles! But I’m also fairly confident that this play is GH Counter. It’s not designed to act as a sweep but it can be. What I mean by that is the TE is actually reading.

Because the DE squeezed like he did, it makes it virtually impossible for the pulling guard to get a good kick out that would have allowed the TE to lead inside. The TEs are taught that if it gets gummed up on the inside like that, pull to the outside.

We can also see from the end zone shot that the RBs initial path is to the inside. The play is also a fantastic example of Whittington’s vision.

I will say that I know of high school coaches who have made this into two plays so that the onus is on the coaches instead of making the players think about too much. But I’m college, from what I understand, it’s the same play with two options.

As far as reading the backside backer, I can definitely see that being the case. They read an LB on the same run with an RPO attached for Thompson’s TD pass.

Oh I don’t agree or disagree. The only reason I knew what I said is because I used to get mad because I’d hear we snagged a 4 star and the go to 247 and they’d have him as a 3. I’d be like, what the heck, guys.

I did find something though, now that my curiosity is peaked. This article I just looked through talked about how out of ESPN, 247, Rivals and Scout, the two latter sites have camps that they sponsor.

They take the camps into consideration in their ratings, where 247 and ESPN goes by tape and Coach opinion alone. So if a player doesn’t attend the camps, there’s no data and it’s reflected in their ratings.

I've been following them for over 20 years, and often a 4-Star at 247 is a 3-Star on Rivals.  My reasons for using Rivals.com are...

So many people ask why I do not refer to the CBS 247 Recruiting analyses and...

    Or we can disagree...no sweat.

He is also a 4-Star on Rivals.com of whom is usually more difficult to qualify for.  The list offering him is pretty impressive...Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC!

    v176
    N.RIVALS.COM

Kyler Kasper - 2023 4 Star Wide receiver for Williams Field (Gilbert, AZ) on Rivals.com

That’s interesting because I’ve always found that the players I look at on Rivals have been given better rankings than on other sites. So I honestly would have never thought that it’s more difficult to qualify for a higher rating with them.
