  1. I honestly think we’re being a little harsh when talking about Shough’s season. His first year starting stats are very similar to Justin Herbert’s.

This was in one of the toughest season to ever happen to college sports. I understand he was sophomore and Herbert was a freshman, but he was new in this offense and didn’t exactly have to most ideal situations to learn it in.

I'm also a fan of AB. I’m sure whoever comes out of camp will be the best guy for the job.

I really like have a coach coming in who has been a DC before and it seemed that many of the other candidates mentioned had no real DC experience.  That said, the only red flag I have to this hire was why wasn't he the primary play caller for Cal's defense last year?

I can’t find a great reason for that. Coach Wilcox cited staff continuity, as other teams were trying to hire Coach Sirmon away and giving him play-calling duties kept him. Coach DeRuyter probably agreed, but would probably rather call the plays, which is why he’s now at Oregon.

Cyrus Habibi-Likio would have fallen into the depth chart badly next year regardless. He was already the No. 3 runningback behind Verdell and Dye and with Dollars showing some flashes and Benson coming along from all accounts CHL was going to really have to fight for the few snaps he was already getting.

Adding Cardwell to the mix might knock him out entirely.

CHL isn't a bad runningback, he has had some nice games, but he just isn't good enough to be the guy at Oregon or many other top Power Five Schools.

Not to mention that Seven Mcgee is part of this class too.

I'm not sure if this article has been linked about coach Deruyter.  Seems like quite a few football people think highly of Tim Deruyter.

He is highly regarded. I’m excited to see his defense in action next season.

Jeesh, the disrespect for the Big 12 in this article lol.

Good information coach. Thanks for bringing it to us.

One question I have is when you say that Kayvon Thibodeaux will be one of the stand up edge rushers. Kayvon is not known as a pass defender so wouldn't that be a big tip off to the offense that he is a rusher and not going into pass defense, thus removing any "guessing" done by the offense ??  I wouldn't expect to see Kayvon do any pass defense as it's "just not his thing".

Since writing this article, I have read a clinic where Coach DeRuyter talked about his defense, so I’m going to be doing a second article where I breakdown his base alignment and each position. He broke down each position and what type of player he wants at each.

The position I think KT will play is titled Joker. It’s similar to the stud position in Coach Avalos’ defense. The Joker is the best pass rusher on the team. He does have some pass coverage responsibilities, but it always seems to be zone. KT also played some Sam LB this past season, and has had time at Stud, so I thing his education there has already started.

I am still rooting for Zach Arnett, although I am sure MC will bring in someone who is very talented...

I've heard that he's no longer in the running from a few places. But, he's still on other lists of still being in consideration. I wonder what's going on there because he interviewed with LSU and Texas too.

  7. I am intrigued by Coach Arnett. I'm a big fan of the 3-3-5 scheme, and the guys from Coach Long's coaching tree are masterful at running it. Though, a buddy and I were just talking, and Coach Schumann is a really nice candidate. Georgia only allowed 69.3 rushing yards per game.

There does seem to be a common factor among the coaches on the list. Most of them run an odd front.

Full Disclosure: pasted from an earlier thread, written about the time Charles was starting this one.

Man, the Pirate has got to be hating on Mario these days! Big Joe, Mastro, Wilson, Floppy Hair Guy - all poached from his staff in the last five years, and now his Mississippi State DC is on the clock?!

After plucking Zack Arnett away from Syracuse for his debut season in Starkville, Leach promptly enhanced his DC's contract at season's end, and was likely feeling pretty good about things with a 2021 Rivals #24 class with crystal balls still pending, and a lush transfer portal landscape beckoning his keen eye for undervalued talent.

But noooo,  now Arnett - late of Coach Boles' original 'Ten to Watch' article - is flirting with the Ducks, while also batting his eyes at Texas? At least Charles get his Rocky Long Coaching Tree chip back in play!

    He also interviewed with LSU!

  9. If by sound familiar we're talking about speculation among fans, then yeah it does lol. But, I'm going to be honest, I don't think there's interference by Coach Cristobal on offense. After watching all the tape I did on Coach Moorhead's offense I did in the off-season, watching Oregon and watching some of Coach Arroyo's offense at UNLV, I'm fairly confident that they're calling their own plays.

  10. I've had this idea of an 8 team playoff that is all about making it to the conference championship. In fact, it would be mandatory. The playoff would consist of all five power 5 champions, the two highest ranked group of 5 champions and an independent school. The independent school would be selected by the two highest ranked independent schools playing each other on conference championship weekend. I don't have room for at large teams, because like I said, in this format you have to be a conference champion. the conference championship games would pretty much be the first round of the playoff.

Reply to FishIceCream about defensive alignment:

The basic concept of 3 down linemen makes no sense...typical OL has 6 blockers...so they double team each of the DL and their RB is “off to races”. On pass plays there is “zero rush”...QB looks around for 5 or 6 seconds until a receiver comes open! With only 3 there is little or no possibility of stunting! The 3-4 also requires 4 really good LB’s...difficult to recruit and maintain 5 or 6 (injuries, transfers, etc).

This is only true if the coach is only rushing the three DL, and that's usually not the case. There is almost always pressure coming from another part of the field. Very few situations where they'll only be rushing three. Its also been said that recruiting good LBs is easier than recruiting elite DL.

I also don't think that Wisconsin would agree that odd fronts are poor against the run! This season the held opponents to 93 yards a game on the ground, with a 3-4 defense.

    Great article, thanks!

Here is an open question to the more knowledgeable folks in our community. Does my following theory make sense?

    My theory:

If I were an Alabama/Ohio State, and could essentially draft the best players in the nation, I'd go with a base 3-4. Three defensive linemen who could truly be two gap defenders and get some pressure on the QB. Sort of like what we had back with Buckner, Armstead, and our nose guard whose name I forget. (To my shame!) That much talent on the line lets you get fancy with the linebackers.

At the next level, I'd go with a base 4-3 style defense. Maybe only two 2-gap types and the others try to penetrate or go around the edge. This is about where I think we are now, recruiting-wise.

At the level below that, if I could only get one 2 gap type reliably through recruiting, I'd go back to the 3-4 and put that one at nose guard.

    Summing up:

    1. Reliably able to recruit enough good DL so you can field 3 good ones all game, go with the 3 up front.

    2. Only able to recruit enough to reliably field two, you go with the 4 up front, maybe moving around where they line up.

    3. Only able to recruit enough to reliably field one, back to the 3 and put him in the middle.

This might be the dumbest post in the short history of this forum, but I am curious what people think about it!

As for the new DC, I think all of those seem pretty good to me.

Typically, teams that can recruit the DL at a high level run a four man front. It allows them to get to the QB without having to bring extra pressure. That of course doesn't mean that they don't blitz at all.

And honestly, it comes down to what scheme the coaching staff favors. Though it has been said that it's easier to recruit LBs vs elite DL.

DL are different  between even and odd fronts also, in terms of body types. In odd fronts, the DL are usually bigger and take up block to free the LBs.

I agree Coach that (projected) stability, the liklihood of continuing for 5+ years as Oregon DC, is one of the important screening variables for the hire. I would not have agreed with hiring internal staff two years ago, but after Avalos' impact, we may have a coach on staff who can be outstanding as DC.

I don't know that really guarantees a long term DC though. Coach Heyward wants to be a HC and is on record as acknowledging that the way there is to become a DC. His defenses could ballout for a year or two and he's moving on to be a HC. But, that's also not something that I think should be worrisome. The larger Coach Cristobal's coaching tree becomes, the more attractive an opportunity it is to coach for him.
