Yep, thanks, Charles. I had missed one of those articles so it was great to read it now. It is the one regarding Coach's "Hard Progrum" and the impact on possible transfer, even 5 stars.
Which is music to my ears. While the last HC was undoubtedly a great recruiter, that was largely contingent upon the ratings services' rankings. I am not saying he didn't do his own evals but I think his emphasis on stars may have been to the detriment of his willingness to confront athletes who didn't completely buy-in or go the extra mile.
When I read DL talk about the "de-recruitment process" I was encouraged. We have to be willing to lose some high profile kids that coach thinks may not pan out. Better to have an understanding and move on early than to hold a rated 4 star player for going on 5 seasons now, who has played 3 downs of football on the field while never being on the injured list.
Glad to have a coach who gets that in the awards before results era.

Phoenix always reminded me of some sci-fi story where an alien craft picks up a HUGE hunk of concrete from the midwest and then dumps it in the middle of a desert...just to see what happens. The best thing about Phoenix is its proximity to the Grand Canyon....and that's many hours of driving away.
I've lived a few places...none of which I can generally identify with politically...including Oregon. That said, I wouldn't trade the Oregon coast for any area/town/city in the U.S. We have mountains (wonderful hunting), rivers and ocean (great fishing), proximity to large (ugly) cities, great surfing (the 'tow-in'), quiet, peaceful, and safe towns, etc. Sure, it rains a lot here (it's only water) but the temperatures are always mild. In fact it helps everything here grow like a plant nursery gone wild.
Nope, I'm an unabashed fan of this area and wouldn't trade. In my book, coastal Oregon is paradise. (I'm allowed to change my mind if the Pacific Plate ever gives way, lol!!)
I'm with Mudslide.
I was born and raised in Portland and still have a home here. Different place than it was growing up obviously. Between then and now, I lived in Eugene, Bend, Orlando, Dallas, Chicago, and in Shanghai, Strasbourg, Luzern, and Vienna. Work has taken me to 73 countries.
I hit 60 in 2025 and will retire to the Oregon Coast and spend winters in western Austria. Nothing beats Christmas Season in the Alps.

Both Kellen and AJ Feeley had lengthy NFL careers somewhat unexpectedly to me. Akili, Joey, Dennis and VA on the other hand had shorter careers than I expected for them each individually.
Mariota and Justin have yet to finish their scripts.

Because the Blazers are owned by a trust, rather than an individual, there is a fiduciary duty under the law to do whatever is in the best interests of the trust. Unless the trust says something like the trustee may take into account whatever is in the best interest of the city, their hands my be tied. Kolde or no Kolde. I suppose if all beneficiaries of the trust (whoever they are) agreed to a deal that netted them less than the optimal haul, that would work. But most people are not so generous.
Apparently Canzano is not aware of fiduciary duty....shocker.

Interesting line. If Oregon airs it out against Utah like they did in the second half of the bowl game, given the OSU success against the Utes defense in the Rose Bowl, maybe the thinking goes that we play them tougher and win one of those games?
Add in KT's comments about the team's lack of focus given Mario's impending departure, the loss of Utes LB's, and the Lanning Era reboot, a guy could talk himself into the Duck's winning the Pac-12 title next year over SC and Utah.

If he can improve to 8-3 next year, maybe they get back to the Cheez-It Bowl?
Mario returning to the U? Is it closer to Frost returning to Lincoln or Harbaugh to Meatchicken?

Oregon Ducks safety Daymon David enters transfer portal
WWW.OREGONLIVE.COMDavid had tackles while playing in nine games last season.Seems like the Ducks are thin on the back end of this defense? Scoop has played well in practice but is one of those guys who can't shake the injury bug.

"A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?"
Great post, thanks. Hard not to believe when an agent is telling you how great you are?
True. And I think social media has enhanced the delusion. Because the narrative now starts in early high school, with scouts, recruiters, and handlers all looking to be on the kid early to buttress their bona fides or cement themselves as one of the entourage.
I that sense, I do feel sorry for anyone caught up in the hype tornado. Imagine the type of grounding it would require to navigate that world. I like DL's "growth mindset" because it implies there is work to be done. Like the "de-recruiting" process I have heard inklings about as well.
Coach DL is highly emotionally intelligent it seems to me. Especially compared to Mari's (no O) tough guy persona which didn't seem to emphasize development much. His approach seemed to be one of providing an opportunity (a schollie) to kids ranked highly by agencies and "scouts" and then leaving it up to them to maximize their potential without any support, encouragement, or tweaking of schemes to take advantage of team and individual strengths.

As I've said many times....any of these portal/NIL changes will not affect Oregon for three, maybe four years. So enjoy it while you can, and don't check out three years before anything substantial to the program actually happens!
I am making the MOST of the next three years, as non-revenue sports may go away as well. So bask in all the winning that Oregon is doing...while you can.
(I am thinking of copying this somewhere so I can copy-and-paste it every time I see someone about to quit being a fan!)
I agree with this 100%. The future is always uncertain and I will enjoy those sports immensely as long as they are holding games!

Could there be more players than fans at that scrimmage?
I think we will look back at the 1996-2021 years as a distinct era with the 85-scholarship limit and NIL as bookends of that era. 85 schollies leveled the playing field as much as possible. NIL deconstructs that system.
In that 25 years, the Ducks record against the Dawgs was 20-5. After the dark decades of the 70's and 80's, I achieved nirvana.
I have no idea what's next. I will continue to tune in as long as I am interested in the college football product. Not sure that will be much longer. I have no illusions that I will be missed.
-
There will be some roster churn until Fall Camp is over. Between the new staff, late enrollees, NIL and transfer portal....and, God forbid, injuries.....it's likely to be sizeable. I'd put the over/under at 7.
-
Feel sorry? No.
The problem is an ancient one. People think they are worth more than they are. Also, people don't understand statistics. A low percentage of athletes are professionals, yet each thinks they are pro worthy. Especially if they are making plays at a P5 school.
In the case of these athletes, they have been feted and tweeted and tik tok'ed for years based on click-bait hype that makes money for themselves and their entourage from a young age. The ones who sharpen the saw, water the bamboo, or whatever metaphor you like, can make it. But many get distracted and lose focus or, believe the hype and light the cigar too early or, simply don't measure up against the competition or, a thousand other things.
Life isn't fair. But, we all need someone to sell us insurance, or open another burger franchise. And, at least they had the social media heyday that few others ever get.

Wilner seems to often skew Duck-skeptical in the off season. Then, once we show up in conference play, he says we "overachieve" rather than he misjudged.

I'm going to apologize in advance for the length to follow:
Jon Wilner peels back some of the layers of Senate Bill 1401, the “College Athlete Race and Gender Equity Act,”. Gotta love the names that are given to these Bills to foster a narrative that has nothing to do with the actual application.
Football and men’s basketball players, the only athletes on “profitable teams/revenues exceed scholarship costs” could receive huge sums.
If it becomes law, the California schools would be at significant financial disadvantages plus, create massive Title IX complications and threaten the viability of Olympic sports.
Do we need Larry Scott to talk to the legislature?
This bill limits access to the cash to the athletes in the sports that generate the “profit”.
It seems backers of the bill includes a union and the National College Players Association (NCPA). You may remember the NCPA, they of the doomed-at-the-start #WeAreUnited movement in the Pac-12 wherein they sought a 50/50 revenue split between the ATHLETE-students and the schools.
SB-1401 states, “Excessive athletic program expenditures on salaries, administration, and facilities are not necessary to field intercollegiate athletics and should be partially redirected to address racial and gender-based inequities endured by college athletes.”
Cover your ears while the rest of the Power 5 laughs their a’s off. And how is paying only football and basketball players addressing “racial and gender-based inequities” when women will not benefit?
The author of the bill obviously showed a lack of understanding that football and men’s basketball generate the revenue that is vital for the rest of the athletic departments sports that all lose money.
For instance, if a college had football revenue of $40M, half of that would have to be set aside for the players, minus the amount spent on scholarships. If the scholarship money was $4M, then $16M would go into the players’ “pool”, instead of supporting the other sports.
That’s $185K for each of the 85 scholarship players, available at $25K per year and the balance upon earning a degree within 6 years. Walk-ons aren’t addressed per se. And who would want a walk-on if they are going to take money out of your pocket?
The upside, out-of-state transfers might drop as the players would be leaving that money behind if they transferred out of CA. Or, would they could just leverage what they leave behind in their NIL deals at the new school.
And of course, at least until the lawyers got involved, payment to the players shall not establish an employment relationship. Why not? Because the bill says so.
How does this jive with Title IX one may ask. Good question, because the Judiciary Committee declared that women’s sports would be unaffected...“The one thing this bill would not do is hurt Title IX,”
However, Committee analysis of the bill states: “The formula proposed by this bill will almost certainly benefit male student athletes more than it will female athletes. These disparate impacts mean that the bill might force California institutions of higher learning to violate their Title IX obligations not to discriminate on the basis of sex in any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Huh??? Stay tuned to see if the legislature has an answer prior to being taken to the Supreme Court on this issue.
Certainly better articulated than my post.....irrational ideologies inevitably turn inward on themselves.

I find it interesting how the motivated reasoning has changed on this.
I recall posters of a certain ilk on other sites a few short years ago suggesting that non-revenue generating squads are getting the shaft by citing how the men's teams had better facilities, etc.
When one countered that they generated the funds, and in the case of football took the brunt of the brutal injuries, so that others had a chance at an athletic scholarship, that logic was dismissed as misogynistic or elitist.
Now this ilk has unleashed NIL and further wants profit-sharing for revenue generating athletes. Wither the concern for other scholarship athletes. I wonder if they would consider themselves misogynist and elitist now?
When one abandons reason, one is by definition unreasonable.

I have worked in higher ed for 25 years. Strategic Change Management is not a strength of college administrators. In fact, I think they are genetically engineered to be the opposite of that. The exception is Mitch Daniels at Purdue.

This is just me, silly fan, but the player I'm most excited about is Kasper. He's TE size with WR skillset, 6'5 195, and apparently a strong work ethic.
I agree.....TE seems to be a room in transition. Ferguson, Mataveo are the TE 2-deep. The UH H-back whose name escapes was plucked from the portal so coaches like him. Kaspar is a hybrid TE guy.
Where does that leave Webb, McCormick, Herbert and Nanney? How many scholly and WO TE/Hbacks will we carry?
