If he can't right now he will learn real fast. I doubt Cristobal would have hired him if he didn't believe DeRuyter wouldn't be an asset in recruiting.

DeRuyter might need some on the job training but taking Cristobal's recruiting class will have him good to go before we know it.

Tim's recruitment ability's at Cal were not very good. Also Cristobal is not very good at "coaching up" players and I am afraid his ability to "coach up coaches" are about the same.

  2. I agree with you Darren, Oregon is not the school one goes to in order to be "coached up" in football. I don't think it ever has been.

What made players so good in the past has not been "coaching them up" but has been how they were utilized. The plays themselves. Yes the X's and O's. If a player wants/needs to be coached up the best place to go is Utah.

I totally agree with your statement "Lucky for Herbert, in being drafted at No. 6, he went to the Chargers and not the Bengals. The Chargers are the better team and organization, as well as his childhood dream team." and it couldn't happen to a better person. This also, IMO is much better then being drafted No. 1, this is what has given him "The rookie of the year"

I do, however disagree with one thing and wish all Duck fans would get over it and that is when you say "(remember those days Oregon fans?), not the once conservative ball-control offense that was complimented by a suffocating defense". My friends those days are past and simply put, you and most Oregon fans need to get with the times. Stop living in the past and move on.

In terms of Mario himself, I feel we are lucky to have him. After all we could be having articles about Taggart. (Oh what a downer)

You are probably right about the technical issue - it turned out that no matter how I resized the image, it looked the same on the forum.

Live and learn. And yes - I think we are in the realm of all but the very top, but still not quite in the top ten yet.

The forum has size limitations and will adjust it automatically, which is why making a link is sometimes better.

Sorry - I was trying to edit this to put on a larger image!

At the risk of being snarky - many coaches might look at the salary when choosing their top 10. Here is something I found from 2020, and I don't notice Oregon on that list.

    Anyway - coaching salaries!

It might have worked better if you just made a link to the place. What you inserted works for me cause I pulled it off onto my desktop and then enlarged it.

I think Oregon was just outside the top 21 that is shown in the list. Around 3M+ for 2020 but his raise brought him up a bunch.

In the top 16, SEC has 8 schools, the Pac-12 has 0.

  5. Did Oregon just get snubbed by "Rivals" on the "The top 10  coaching jobs in college football"  from the same link ??

    With all the talk of:
the culture established here at Oregon,
    the fantastic facilities,
the national recognition that Oregon has,
    the winning history Oregon has,
and then not put us on the top 10 list of the best coaching jobs in college football, - - - whats going on here ??

    (from n.rivals.com)
The top 10 coaching jobs in college football
    1. Alabama This should not even be a debate as Nick Saban has the Alabama program as close to an NFL franchise as possible with culture, recruiting and player development off the charts.
    2. Ohio State The way the Buckeyes are able to recruit and how they simply dominate the Big Ten makes this one of the best jobs in all of sports.
    3. Clemson Clemson may not have the prestige or money of some programs behind it, but can you name a better program in the Southeast without Saban?
    4. Texas Yes, this is still very much a premium job with great recruiting advantages, prestige and endless money. It’s amazing that someone hasn't been able to figure out how to win there recently.
    5. USC This may be an unpopular choice, but the recruiting landscape is still amazing, the city has proven to get behind a winner and big-name coaches will always be interested.
    6. Georgia UGA has a great recruiting territory and everything needed to win a national title as far as athletic support. It’s amazing it’s been since 1980, honestly.
    7. LSU No one has a better recruiting advantage than LSU. If it weren’t for Alabama, the Tigers would be much higher on this list.
    8. Oklahoma The Big 12 is still the Sooners to own, and if they had a better crop of in-state players they’d be higher. But this is a job where you can win a natty.
    9. Florida With FSU in the dumpster and Miami losing a bit of its luster with years of mediocre play, the Gators are still No. 1 in Florida and that makes it an attractive program.
    10. Texas A&M A surprise on this list? Perhaps, because the Aggies haven’t won anything like the others, but being the SEC team in Texas is a huge deal.

I agree with the 247 feelings. Its always been a distorted face with me when a school can add to their recruiting score by adding more players. In theory, a school could recruit 85 players in 1 year and have the highest score, even though every kid is a 2 star and is 50th or lower in their respective position. Said school wins the recruiting title. Thats bunk. Average the score, average the stars. 247 just wants to be different and make themselves out to be deep analytical evaluators. The common fan eats it up. Those in the know, know better.

I totally agree 1Funduck, good take.

Washington in the middle of the Pac12........................means they are the "worst of the best, or best of the worst".

Washington fans feel there glass is half full. - -  Oregon fans feel Washington's glass is half empty. - -  But we all know Oregon's glass is aways full.

(even I have to wonder where I came up with those words)

I'm going to take issue with 'his recruiting ability'. Recruiting is far and away about winning and the school and perception along with exposure. One would guess they are all interlinked. Oregon is pulling power house players and didn't have a DC approaching signing day. Our DC was gone. Why didn't these players leave? Any of them? None of them. Why? Brand. IMO its really that simple

A good point 1Funduck. Oregon does have a good national "Brand" and that does help, along with "winning". However the "talk across the coffee table" makes a big difference also. Just ask Scott Frost who thinks its was really hard to recruit to Oregon during his days here.

Cal                 2          (No wonder DeRuyter left, as the only two were on offense!)

This of course begs the question "Why wasn't DeRuyter doing any recruiting of (4&5's) when he was at Cal ??"  Maybe he did but couldn't get any ??

This just doesn't impress me about DeRuyter's recruiting ability's.

So far, the Ducks are taking care of the beating them part. USC is living on heritage and location, time for them to catch up.

Careful, we want everyone to "think" USC is good and want them to be in the top 12 or 15 but we don't want them to catch up to us.

Not that far outside the norm for Cristobal. He has said it every single time he has hired a new coach.

Leavitt to Avalos ... upgrade... Avalos to DeRuyter ... upgrade

    Arroyo to Moorhead.. upgrade

This begs the question "if each change is an 'upgrade', then why didn't he just get the latest upgrade in the first place". This would indicate his first picks ended up not being so good.

  11. Lets face it, the NCAA Tournament (March Madness) is where the money is. That is where you want to be your best and to be your best you have to have all your players available. If you want to do well on the National scene of March Madness you better protect your players.

If you have a concern about making the NCAA Tournament then you probably will not do well at the Conference Tournament anyway. So why go there ??
