Oregon's Unique Weakness for the 2022 Season
As I wrote...I have complete confidence in TJ Bass on the left side, but in reference to the rest of the offensive line--and what have we been doing for five years? We have been depending upon "Minnie-Me!"

Oregon's Unique Weakness for the 2022 Season
Hello All, I was going to be writing an article about this prior to the Georgia game, but my time is a little limited and my final article before the season will be a "prep" one concerning what to look out for with the Oregon Lanning/Lupoi defense. In all my years of watching Oregon football--this year's weakness is one I've never written about before, and it is unusual. I am referring to the entire season hinging upon whether the Ducks can get good pass-protection blocking from our offensive tackles. Salu at right tackle was eaten alive in the Spring Game, and both he and Stephen Jones fit Cristobal's "big" profile, but they do not have the feet to fend off the edge rushers these days. Salu and Jamarillo had their lunch-money taken often in the Spring Game, and you will see examples of that when I feature Bradyn Swinson, in a short analysis on Thursday. Yet DJ Johnson and others had their way with our offensive tackles as well; it is not always about how good our pass rushers, are, but how bad our pass-protection is from our offensive tackles. Last year we had TJ Bass at left tackle, and he was superb blocking smaller quicker safety/linebacker types in open field in addition to pass rushers. He has the feet, but he must be healthy and playing at tackle, and not at guard as they did often in the spring. If he is the blindside tackle...I rest easy on that side, as we'll be fine. The right side is a horror show that could get our quarterbacks injured. I should not just complain about a problem unless I have a suggestion to solve it, and mine is simple; on obvious passing downs...bring in Josh Connerly on the right side, as he does have the fast feet. He will get schooled from time-to-time, and we will have to take our lumps, but over the longer course of the season--he is our best bet, I believe. Again...used on obvious passing downs until Connerly has the fine-points of run-blocking; Salu can do adequate when we are doing play-action passes if the release is quick or the QB is rolling away from him. Dillingham has brought back a more lethal passing attack that will take shots downfield, and have more longer-developing crossing routes. This means to score a boatload of points and get things teed-up for Lanning's blitzes...we must have the additional time to throw the ball downfield. With good pass-protection we will score a ton more points than last year, and this feeds into Lanning's wheelhouse of turnover-creating blitzing schemes that we will cover later. It all depends on the pass-protection; can Oregon solve it?

The Three Parts of the FishDuck Oregon Sports Community Are Now Complete!
Thank you, although the key word in this is "work," as this new addition also created new duties (and time taken) at night in addition to working with the writers, moderators, rule-violators and Duck News Hunters. And oh-yeah...I'm a writer and analyst too. You just don't know what you're getting into at times, but I am pleased nonetheless. I've wanted this for Oregon fans and I for a long time...

The Eventual College Football Renaissance
David, I appreciate your additional perception of how many schools in the Semi-Pro conferences will change their mind later and opt to be in a traditional conference. I mean, being in a super-conference sounds great until you find yourself in the bottom half of it the vast majority of the time. You could have a fine team that narrowly lost a bunch of games and that is now sub-500, and could be a 10 win team elsewhere. My FishDuck Friends,....could this evolve into how we feel about college baseball versus the players who have opted to enter the minor leagues and work their way up in MLB? We recognize that players in the local Eugene "Ems" team are better than the Duck Baseball team, but it does not diminish my passion for Our Beloved Ducks. Is this where our football team and passion for it is ultimately headed? Great article Mr. Marsh!

Bama, Ducks, Georgia Have The Most Starting Linebacker Talent In FBS
I keep remembering how Dan Lanning helped turn some 3-Star players at Georgia into high draft picks...he can do it here! Jeffery Bassa was a stud, and now he's bigger?

Whoa! The List of Dan Lanning Recruits is Impressive!
As Pennsylvania Duck pointed out in the FD Feed...this does not include transfers! Add them, and he is killing-it! (The list is bigger than what appears in this post, so click inside the box of the tweet to see them) Speaking of killing-it...Pennsylvania Duck just posted the FIFTIETH (50!) Article/tweet/news item in the FishDuck Feed for today. Can you believe that? If you are retired...you can read to your heart's content in the FishDuck Feed all day. Now, Pennsylvania Duck returns to work in a week, and that means the rest of us will need to get to work posting articles in the FishDuck Feed as this wonderful Duck fan has done. He/she will be available for mid-day duty, but we've been spoiled by the superb time given to all of us. What an amazing launch for the FishDuck Feed...

Will Lanning Pop Some Trick Plays on the Bulldogs?
I got to pondering this after thinking about the other thread concerning secrecy. Is he a "trick-play" kind of guy? We didn't see hardly any from the last coach, (no surprise) but Taggart, Helf, Chip and even Bellotti were quite willing to mix it up. Part of this is also the question of what is his brand? Will it look foolish or aggressive in his first game as HC? Stick your neck out...will be see any trick plays on offense? On Special Teams? Do you want to see any? Pondering minds want to know... I do want to see some on both offense and special teams; a reverse on a punt or kickoff, and a double-pass?

Really Good Analysis of Dana's New Verbals...Whew!
This is tasty stuff about the new verbals for Dana--what a team this will be! Both these guys sound like they fit the offense so well...thoughts? "...He’s pushing 6-foot-10, he’s a fluid athlete, he’s got really high IQ, particularly on the defensive end — he’s borderline got the ability to be a defensive savant...When he’s got it on, he can step out and make some jump shots, run the floor, catch lobs, block shots, defend on the ball and do all of this crazy stuff. You’ll watch him for a 5-6 minute stretch and be like ‘Oh my god, this guy looks like a top-5 pick in the NBA.’ My FishDuck Friends....this is how we do it when we want to discuss an article that is posted in the FishDuck Feed. A Reason for All the Secret Treatment of Scrimmages?
I am not complaining about it, but observing and trying to explain it. I agree with David Marsh that it hardly makes sense when you’ve been running the same offense and defense for years and it is all on film.., But this is different. Big opener against a former colleague, and it makes sense to make the Bulldogs prepare for several scenarios. The only time Lanning’s offense and defense is truly unknown is right now.
-
A Reason for All the Secret Treatment of Scrimmages?
Coach Lanning ran the Mint defense at Georgia, and I will be explaining and breaking it down just before the opener. But during the Spring Game...he did not show any of the usual alignment that comes with the defense, such as the 4i-0-4i techniques of the three down defensive linemen. He might be keeping Kirby in doubt as to whether he is going to duplicate the same defense at Oregon?
