2024 BIG Info, Predictions, Etc '2'
Thank you, NJ. This will be Dillon Gabriel's 6th and not 5th season of college football. Do you think The Portal matters? Offense - 6 transfers: Gabriel; Tez Johnson; Stewart (due to QB injuries among other issues, I think it is a stretch to call Stewart a 'star' at A+M but he has star potential; Holden: Cornelius; and Brewer from Indiana. Defense - 7 transfers: Caldwell; Burch; Jacobs; Muhammad; Alexander; Savage; and Johnson. That's some fine Portal Picking.

CBS Sports Dennis Dodd's Revised Preseason Top 25 Rankings
Dennis Dodd has revised his 2024 Top 25 in light of Nick Saban, hanging it up, Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL, Kalen DeBoer taking Saban's place at Alabama, Jedd Fisch moving to UW, with Brent Brennan the new HC at AZ, Cam Ward committing to Miami, and other "minor" differences in CFB since Michigan took down UW for the 2023/24 title. College football rankings: Georgia, Ohio State, Texas lead top 25 entering spring practices for 2024 season - CBSSports.com WWW.CBSSPORTS.COM The Bulldogs remain in the top spot, but the Buckeyes are lurking after making a splash this offseason A few thoughts on Dodd's recent Top 25. Is Dodd unaware that CBS is no longer the SEC's broadcast partner? Dodd has eight SEC teams in his Top 25, six B12 teams, five B1G and ACC teams, and one Independent, Notre Dame. Georgia is ranked No. 1, no surprise, with Tennessee being the lowest ranked of the eight SEC teams at No. 15. The SEC only plays eight conference games, However, No. 5 Alabama plays No. 1 Georgia, No. 8 Missouri, No. 10. LSU, No. 13. Oklahoma, and No. 15. Tennessee. Will Alabama and its 2024 SEC opponents all finish with fewer than two losses? In 2023 Oklahoma with two defeats was the playoff committee's No. 12 ranked team and would have missed a 12-team playoff field in favor of No. 23 Liberty. The eight-ranked SEC teams will be competitive but they will defeat one another. The SEC could have eight teams ranked in the AP Poll preseason 2024 Top 25, but in the committee's final poll, I do not see six SEC teams being ranked in the Top 10. Dodd has No. 16 Clemson as his highest-ranked ACC team and, Utah at No. 12 as his highest-ranked B12 team. Clemson would be seeded No. 3 in the 2023/25 12-team playoff format with Utah seeded No. 4, but no other ACC and B12 teams would be in the 12-team field. The ACC and the B12 both would be better off with 2 guaranteed spots in the proposed 14-team playoff. the possible format come 2026. TCU coach Sonny Dykes calls the B1G and SEC 3-3-2-2-1 and three at-large teams proposal with the B1G and SEC champs receiving the top 2 seeds and 1st round byes, "Preposterous." I'm not certain that B12 Commissioner Brent Yormack will agree with Sonny. Two birds in the hand ... Dood's biggest movers: No. 9. Penn State is up seven spots; No. 11. Michigan is down eight spots; and No. 22. Miami and No. 25 Virginia Tech were not ranked in Dodd's first release. OBD remains at No. 4. Extrapolating from this ranking, Dodd's 12-team playoff would have one G5, ACC, B12, and Independent in the field. Two B1G teams and six SEC teams with three SEC teams hosting three of the four 1st-round playoff games. Oregon hosting Missouri would be the only B1G team hosting a 1st-round game. If this were to happen, you can bet that B1G Commissioner Tony Petitti would be 'encouraging' the SEC to play nine conference games. However, it won't happen. The B1G and SEC will both have at least three teams in the playoff field in 2024, lending weight to the proposed 3-3-2-2-1 and three-at-large teams model. Query. Is the B1G/SEC 14-team playoff proposal designed to produce Sonny Dykes-like responses, dissenting votes from the ACC, B12, and perhaps a number of the G5 conferences, and give the Power 2 a reason to hold a Power 2 post-season tournament? This would force Notre Dame to join the B1G or less likely, the SEC and accelerate the breakup of the ACC. ESPN has offered $1.3B for exclusive playoff broadcast rights through the 2031 season. Less than what was expected. How much less postseason revenue would the B1G and the SEC receive if the Power 2 held its own 'playoff?'

A Realistic Look at the B1G and the SEC's 14-team Playoff Proposal
Good call. And in recruiting,1 from the B12, No.24 Texas Tech. I think the money men in the ACC and the B12 will be making the decision and not the coaches. Grab onto 2 and if 3 stellar teams somehow show up, look for an AL spot. Based on College Football News' predicted 2024 regular season win totals, the following are in contention for a PO spot in the 12-team field and would be contending for automatic seeds in a 14-team PO. B1G - Ohio State - 12-0 - 1st round bye in both 12 and 14 teams/ proposed that SEC/B1G champs be seeded 1 + 2 with a 1st round bye. 11-1 - Oregon/ USC and Penn St 10-2/ Michigan 9-3 - CFB has USC, 8-1 in the conference without a game vs Ohio State, making the champ game in favor of 8-1 in the conference Oregon with a loss to Ohio State. Regardless, at 11-1, Oregon would be in the 12-team field. SEC - Georgia 12-0 - same as Ohio State Texas and LSU 10-2, 9-3 Ole Miss, Bama, Oklahoma, and Tennessee - Tie breaker in play here to determine the team that plays UGA in the SEC champ game. 5 B1G, 7 SEC contenders. SEC has a leg up playing only 8 conference games.

College Football Nearing Long-awaited Adoption of Helmet Communications After Successful Bowl Season Test
In the NFL in 2023/24, 83% of all snaps came out of a shotgun formation. Not dispositive as to the number of times teams huddled before a play. An NFL game last season averaged 155 snaps per game. College averaged 180 snaps a game, 90 per team, down an average of only 2 plays a game with the clock changes. The Browns ran the most plays on average, 69.8. Seattle had the lowest number of plays on average, 58.5. If anything, in-helmet mics and improved communication without having to look over to the sideline should reduce the number of times a team huddles. But up-tempo does not equate to more wins. Per Bleacher Report, teams that ran 77 or fewer plays in CFB in 2023/24 won the majority of their games. Hello? Can you hear me? 😁

More ammunition for the B1G and the SEC to have 3 automatic bids and the two top seeds with a 1st round bye in a 14-team playoff field. A Realistic Look at the B1G and the SEC's 14-team Playoff Proposal
The 3rd place team in the B1G is unlikely to finish with more than 3 losses in any given season. The top teams do not play each other enough intra-conference for this to happen and the majority of B1G and SEC teams do not schedule more than 1 P4 opponent out-of-conference. With 16 teams in the B12, I don't believe the runner-up would have more than 3 losses. As to Notre Dame. the gig should have been up long ago. The ACC loses its top teams and ND will join a conference. I think come 2026 we will end up with a 16-team PO field with some manner of assurances for the B1G and the SEC. The Power 2 should not leave everything up to a 13-member committee that operates with no disclosure as to how it made its choices and with B1G and SEC committee members not being in the room when teams from their conference are discussed.

A Realistic Look at the B1G and the SEC's 14-team Playoff Proposal
Dennis Dodd gets it. The B1G and SEC proposal for three automatic qualifying (AQ) spots for each conference and a 1st round bye for the SEC and B1G champs in a 14-team playoff, may on the surface appear to be greedy but is justified by some of the playoff committee's screwy decisions, by the make up of the SEC's and B1G's 34 teams, and what the fields would have looked like had a 14-team playoff started in 2014. Three votes for this format are in the bag; B1G, SEC, and Notre Dame. Notre Dame finishes in the top 14 and it's in the playoff. The ACC and the B12 may not like it but there is no assurance that the conferences would have two teams in the playoff every year and 3 AL spots would give the B12 and the ACC a shot at three teams in the field. The G5? The guarantee of one spot in the field is no different than the G5 will have in a 5/7 format and the G5 will be convinced to vote in favor of the B1G/SEC proposal by some additional sugar spooned over to the G5. The G5 commissioners know that for the most part, the G5 playoff game will be a body bag game for the P4 opponent, and more than one such game every season would hurt the money to be made from the new playoff media deal. "If a 14-team field had been in place over the prior ten years, the newly formed (2024 version) Big Ten and SEC would have landed 75% of the top two seeds (15 of 20.)" It sure is nice to be B1G. 2024 BIG Info, Predictions, Etc '2'
UW will be the last game in the regular season year after year. The Huskies are the Ducks' only permanent opponent in the B1G. Because they will meet every season with the game having an impact on Oregon's post-season goals, champ game, and playoff, I expect the Cascade Clash will be right at the top if not at the top of Oregon's B1G rivalries. How dramatic was the 2023 Apple Cup when UW needed a late FG to win the game? WSU could have put a big dent in UW's PO hopes. Beginning in 2024, Oregon will play Michigan and Ohio State in 2026 and 2027. No games vs. these 2 in 2025 and 2028. 3 games vs. USC in the next 5 seasons, 2025, 2026, and 2028, 2 of the 3 games will be played in Eugene. In the same period, Oregon will play UW 5 times; 3 games in Eugene. Ducks Wire, IMO, does not pay enough attention to schedules when making many down-the-road predictions.

Where is CFB Headed? Follow the Power 2
I doubt the ACC stays as is through the end of the 2036 media deal. UVA, UNC, Clemson, and FSU will be attractive candidates for the Power 2. And if the ACC is no longer a P4 conference, Notre Dame is headed to a P2 conference, probably the B1G. I don't believe that there is a B12 program that would be immediately accretive upon joining one of the Power 2. Kansas would be a fit for the B1G but would the Jayhawks bring in enough CFB viewers? I doubt that CFB has finished the game of conference musical chairs and you are right, no matter what happens the Ducks are in a cat bird seat.

Where is CFB Headed? Follow the Power 2
The author answers his own question as to why the a rush to expand the playoff from 12 to 14 teams. There is no broadcast deal beyond 2025 in place. The B1G and the SEC are not going to sign a new media deal without knowing what the format of the PO will be and more importantly, what will be the P2's cut of the revenue. They are not going to allow Notre Dame, the ACC, B12, and the G5 any leverage regarding the revenue split after the fact. This is big business. This is how the big entities act and should act in a capitalist world of big business. As Mike Witty recently pointed out, collegiality was neutered once the NCAA lost its exclusive broadcast rights in 1984. Expanding the soon-to-be expanded College Football Playoff already? Just chill, Big Ten and SEC SPORTS.YAHOO.COM Ideally, the people that run the College Football Playoff wouldn’t be discussing expanding the College Football Playoff before the College Football Playoff has even officially expanded.

Conference Champ Games - Play or Not Play?
Charles, I agree with you. But will the media allow the games to be dumped before the next media renegotiations go round? 2032 for the B1G. 2034 for the SEC. 2036 for the ACC. The SEC game in particular brings in a lot of viewers and with divisions gone in the B1G so will the B1G champ game.

Bo Nix to the Raiders?
I was blessed to be at the game in Tampa Bay when the underdog Raiders blew out the Washington Redskins 38-9 and prevented the Redskins from winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Marcus Allen was the star of the show rushing for 191 yards on 20 carries. Stud Washington RB John Rigins was held to 64 yards rushing. The Trophy Presentation was tense with Commissioner Pete Rozelle handing the trophy to Al Davis at a time when the Raiders were suing the NFL over the NFL's refusal to allow Davis to move the franchise to LA.
