  1. Substance, not style or flash is something taught/coached from the top.

At the same time, that 'flash" attitude is also taught or at least tolerated from the top down.

The thing with Deion, he had the substance as a player. A 2 sport pro and an NFL lockdown corner, great stuff.

But football really is a team sport. Having a star qb and receiver doesn't get it done at the D1 level. He hasn't won anything yet.

Coach Riley has had success, but not at the highest level. His record against ranked teams is very poor.

But some people measure success by the size of paychecks, so I guess in that regards, both programs are doing well.

Our coach actually knows what winning a Natty feels like, and what it takes.

    I like the substance.

  2. If UW beats a #10 OSU on the road, they should jump FSU into #4.

If an 11 - 1 Duck team beats an undefeated #4 UW in Pac-12 championship, they will be in regardless of what happens in SEC.

There are still 5 ranked Pac-12 teams, only 3 ACC. And if USuC beats UCLA, their record is every bit as good as LSU.

So, IMHO, UW wins out, we win out and win the Pac-12, we're in the playoff.

    Scooo Ducks!

  3. USC used to rule the west coast.

Back when they could stock up on talent, and pay players with cash and cars.

But with scholarship limits and now NIL, the playing field is more level and they can't keep up.

In a town led by Hollywood celebs, a flashy coach is highly desirable, and they got exactly what they wanted.

    One note of comparison:

Riley's first house in LA, a $7M Malibu beach house.

Lanning's first house, a simple 4br with a big yard that he uses to entertain players, regularly.

One fits the bling of big city lights, the other matches his words with his style, family and hard work.

You are spot on David, Lincoln is the perfect fit for LA.

As for the B1G, tOSU, UM, PSU, UW, and ourselves are perennial losses for them and throw in occasional upsets by Wisconsin, Minn.,or Illinois and the future is far from bright for the condoms.

  4. Great post K kid!

I will say this, as much as those 2 coaches left us feeling jilted, disrespected and lied to, I am thankful that they came to Oregon.

It was an uncomfortable time, but coach Lanning wasn't ready for us yet.

Slick Willy broke the barrier of elite talent wanting to come to Oregon.

Mari0 expanded that and showed what good recruiting could do.

    And both left.

Giving AD Mullens the opportunity to stumble into the hire of the century.

For that, I will never hate on those previous two, without them, we might never know how great being a Duck can be.

So go get ASU coach and then pound those river rats! I want them dawgs!

  5. It's more a dis on the Pac12 and an attempt to placate the G-5 schools not getting serious attention in playoff voting.

Espn doesn't have to worry about an unhappy Pac12, and they don't want to bring any more attention to it then necessary.

Educated fans will find the game and viewership will be high. ABC and parent Disney will be happy enough.

  6. This is exactly what the B1G wanted.

Remember, every decision the B1G makes is in the best interest of UM and tOSU.

Bringing in the LA market, and NOT risking losses to their premiere teams fits their goals. They also recruit CA.

They don't care if the LA schools do well or not.

It is enjoyable though, to see them both struggle. They are the biggest reason for the Pac-12's demise.

    Karma, baby.

  7. Camden needs to continue to kick in order to get his MOJO back.

Yes, it's mental. But he has to work through it. We may need him, like we did against Texas Tech, so we need to keep giving him opportunities.

As for kickoffs, his great kick after that ridiculous celebration penalty on Ferguson, 15 yards further back, put them on their 15!  That was huge!

He is also kicking more touch backs than any other kicker in years.

    Keep on fighting Camden!

    You'll get through this.

  8. As good as Bo stats look, I thought he played his poorest to date after that 1st drive in 2nd half.

We should have had 2 more scores minimum, but didn't finish.

I'm not criticizing Bo, just critiquing.

The great thing, he recognized it too.

He will be better next time.

Compare how UW has played since their win over us, to how we have played...

    We are improving.

This "sloppy" win will only further help our motivation and improvement in these last few games.

Hang in there Duck fans. Getting "up" every week is not easy, but we seem to be doing it.

UW, Mich, Texas all struggled in their wins. We still looked the best.

The sad reality is that we need UW to win out so we can beat a 12-0 team to advance to playoff invitational.

    Sco Ducks!!

  9. So does he sit up in the coaches booth/box?

Is that included as part of the sideline?

Btw, fwiw, trying to steal signs is not in- and-of-itself such a horrible misdeed. It's the blatant disregard for the rules everyone else are expected to follow, no scouting in-person.

On top of the coaching recruiting trips during covid blackouts, it appears Michigan, led by his highness J Harbaugh, considers themselves above and beyond following the rules.

    Much like ASU did.

However, we can expect this to be the worst of it.

I hope and expect coach Lanning &Co to be ready to camouflage our signals going forward.

Welcome to the B1G duck fans!

  10. Hey, if you're not already impressed enough,  Tom Brady apparently owns the same model of Rolls Royce.

Personally, I prefer an Oregon rolls Royce, Freeman that is!

Btw, how many tickets does it take before you figure out you ain't supposed to park there!?!

No wonder the list 5 in a row!

  11. Something I've noticed is the communication between players presnap. Particularly if the offense does any motion.

The other thing I've noticed is how effectively linebackers and db's pick up receivers crossing the middle. Seems like in years past we would get burned there, this year they adjust to the player quicker.

There is also quick play between db's and safeties handing off receivers to each other.

It seems everyone has a better grasp of the defense and what's expected of them.

All this is helped by the new additions on d brought in via transfer portal as FishDuck so clearly pointed out previously.

Lastly, I think the strength and conditioning and speed coaches have really done an amazing job.

The guys seem stronger, quicker and healthier then in past years. That makes for fewer missed tackles.

Having the depth that allows for the rotation that keeps fresh legs out is an amazing luxury.

Can't wait to see the video this friday.

  12. Great article Darren. And you are right on, about coaches and Ms. Natalie.

    As for DL leaving Oregon?

    Not gonna happen.

Listen to what he says. Look at his interactions with players. Dan Lanning loves coaching D1 football. And his family loves Eugene. He ain't going anywhere until his kids graduate. Minimum.

As for Alabama, coach DL will need to win several Natties at Oregon before he becomes heir apparant to st.Nick.

I really believe that DL is a long term Duck. And while we can all breathe a sigh of relief, he is still learning how to be a great head coach. We're going to need to take the great with not so great.

Back to back losses to UW is not a trend I want to see continued. The game this Sat is a perfect set up for a trap game. Having the team ready to play is on him.

I love almost everything about coach Lanning, my favorite quote of his, "who would think my first head coaching job would also be my last".

He loves Oregon. He and his family are developing web feet.
