The pac-12 is the most geographically diverse conference in the country. We cover more biomes than any other conference by far.

Where most conferences are pretty much laid out east-west they sit on relatively the same lines of latitude... Or at the very least within a very narrow bandwidth.

The PAC is laid out across a much greater range of latitude. Just think we have the LA schools AND the PNW schools in the same conference. The range of temperatures and weather alone is pretty great from that alone.

The only other conference that has a similar north-south layout is the ACC where it goes from Miami Florida to Syracuse New York.

However, the ACC is pretty closely tied to the Atlantic coast and coastal temperatures tend to be more stable with less variance than continental temperatures.

Now the continenantal conferences are the B1G, and to a lesser degree the big-13 and SEC. Though all these conferences are really laid out as states above east-west so the variation isn't so great on the whole.

Then there is the final thing that makes the variation of climate and weather in the PAC so great... Mountains. Mountains act as a great divider and change weather themselves. Where Oregon, Oregon state, Washington and the California schools are all coastal we have one set of variations in temperature and weather. Cross the mountains and the biomes change to high desert or in the case if the Arizona schools... Just desert.

Then on top of it all Utah and Colorado are so far away from the coast that they are Continental and suffer from the wide range in temperature variations across seasons.

In short the pac-12 has the most range in longitude and latitude which creates the most variance for our teams to play in.

Well ... That might answer your question. At the very least is allowed me to use my UO geography degree for a few minutes.

Add in altitude of mile high in Utah and Colorado.

Let's save that 51 point spread for next year when their Legacy QB is at the helm and he can join his father in Autzen infamy.

  3. At uw, 1968 game when Coach Woody kicked the game winning FG in the pouring rain.  He missed the first attempt, but uw offsides and he hit the mulligan for a 3 - 0 win.

The U of O section was in high school type bleachers behind the endzone.  Horrible seats right up until Ken nailed his kick at us!

BTW, after graduating in '72, my next game at Autzen was 10/22/1994, bleacher seats again.  This time Kenny Wheaton ran right to us.

If UW has so many talented skill players, such big and talented defensive linemen, and such a vaunted pass defense why do they have 4 losses?

Because they got lucky in their other 4 games!

Thank you so much for this post Charles. I'm not surprised that Mario has the class to rise above Lake's self imposed fray.

Lake is doing all he can to be fired in his first season. Jen Cohen likely won't pull the trigger on Lake until he screws it up in year 2?

The bottom line. Oregon making the PO means $6M for the conference and another $4M from the team representing the conference in the Rose Bowl. Oregon to the Rose means the $6M goes away.

Along with pride, there is lots of $ at stake based on Oregon, again, carrying the conference. This is the kind of money the conference usually misses out and that the SEC brings in year after year.

    GO DUCKS!

Not discounting last year, this is year 2.  And, he "did win the North" last year.  Me thinks he should be granted a lifetime contract for that.

  6. It is a tie between him and Schill " “UW is a wonderful school with a great football history. I have great respect and affection for its president, its academic and football program and its former exceptional football coach, coach Petersen. I look forward to our team meeting theirs on the gridiron this Saturday.”

Schill can respond the way he did, and Mario kept to his narrative.
