Right. Can we get #71 & #77. Left tackle and right guard I think. I watched those two more than Riggs. Well coached up front for sure.

Yeah, he plays for a really good team in a really good league. There are D1 players plenty on both sides of the ball almost every game there.

What you see in those high lights is against good competition.

Auburn plays at CAL this season in the 1st of an H+H series. Bama has an H+H scheduled with Arizona. LSU has an H+H scheduled with CU. AZ is at Mississippi St in a return game. All of these games, even the AZ game, will draw more viewers than Oregon at TX Tech which is being played at the same time Texas plays at Alabama.

The difference between these games and these teams coming to Eugene is other than Alabama all of these SEC team are LIKELY TO LOSE at Autzen and Alabama probably doesn't have much more than a 50/50 chance of winning.

All of these SEC team with maybe the exception of Auburn will be favored to win these games on the road. They don't want to come to Oregon because they don't want to go home with an L.

Now I hope they all go home with their tails tucked between their legs, whimpering after a loss out west, but playing at Colorado, Cal and Arizona is a lot different from playing at Oregon.

  3. I think the difference in many of these match ups is not going to be who wins the QB duel, but what defense is best positioned to at least slow some of these QBs down.

My hope is Oregon has bulked up in the secondary, linebacker coverage and pass rush enough to be a team that can do that. We'll see how things come together on the D. But it looks like Lanning has made some moves and gotten some portal guys that will improve the D in those three areas.

I don't think anyone is going to totally shut down any of those guys, but making it hard on them by tight coverage and pass rush enough to slow them down some will make a big difference.

In college football today is any thought given to academics?

It appears that portal players face very little scrutiny when it comes to picking a new school. Has Oregon ever not accepted a transfer it really wanted because of grades? Has any other school? Well, maybe Stanford.

If players are being paid to play they are not amateurs. What are they?

And don’t get me started on the term Student Athlete.

College football is a mess right now.

    Golden Age is laughable.

I know of one football player who had no trouble transferring from an SEC school to an ACC school, but then had trouble at the new school because they wouldn't accept many of the credits he had earned at the SEC school. Ended up in D2 to remain eligible.

  5. Who are you going to count on if Bo is hurt? Ty is probably the best at least until Novosad learns the offense and adjusts to the college game better. I still have a feeling Ty is going to surprise a lot of people if Bo is out for a few games and Ty is given the reigns even for a few games.

Then he gets the #1 reps in practice and the game plan is built around him and his abilities.

I don't think we've even come close to seeing his ceiling at this point.

In mop up time, give them both some run, but I'd focus on Ty at least early on.

Ducks become heavy favorites to land 4-star Oregon legacy QB Akili Smith Jr.

It isn’t hard to imagine seeing an Akili Smith play inside Autzen Stadium again down the road.

After the great Akili led Oregon to so much success decades ago, it appears that the Ducks might be in line to land his son, 4-star QB Akili Smith Jr.  Over the past week or so, a number of predictions have come in on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine for Smith to commit to Oregon. He is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 94 overall player in the class of 2025, and the No. 7 QB.

Great news, not just because he's a legacy player, but this kid has scary good potential. Big, strong, fast and even as a soph. makes both the throws that need a strong arm and the touch throws. He's good at avoiding a rush and runs to pass more than as a rusher, but is a good runner if he needs to be.

  7. To this point I would compare Ty's experience to that of a student driver training in a simulator.

Until you give him the keys to the car, it's hard to tell how well he will drive.

My hope is that will not need to happen this year, since that would mean Nix is out with an injury.

But if called upon, game planned for his skills, getting starter reps in practice, and stepping onto the field as the QB, at least for a game or two, he just may surprise us all.

Going to be tough. UConn is now ranked #1 by KenPom.

While KP is a good tool, a lot of teams lower ranked in KP have won games in this tourney. Eye test says UConn wins too, but the game hasn't been played yet. Once they throw the ball up, who knows.

In anycase, SDSU has just shown one more reason they are ready for a PAC invite. It's a bit overdue actually.

I have to concur about the SEC and B1G being badly overrated in terms in terms of number of entrants in the Dance this year. I  will say that since 2001, the SEC has produced  three national champs as compared to 0 for the B1G  and Pac-12. And by far, using championships as a measuring stick, the ACC and Big-12 have it all over the other three Power-5 Conferences.

Calipari  at Kentucky has probably done less  with more than any coach of the modern era. I actually think that he is not a bad floor coach. His over entitled 5-stars need to recognize that they are not yet ready for prime time and need to develop beyond their freshman year before jumping to the NBA, where many of them do not stick. I often wonder what Mark Few of Gonzaga could do  with these Kentucky classes if he could get a few of them to stick around for three years. Yet  I suspect that the delights of Spokane, WA would not be much of an enticement.

Yeah, a couple of things I wonder about in CBB.

    1. How Mark Few gets done what he gets done where he's at?

    2. How Cal is still at Kentucky? I know they didn't hire him to create a minor league team for the NBA.

The NC is all that matters at UK. Cal hasn't done that in a long time.

Good system, good cast, and MM should now have developed the thick skin from his previous NFL stops to deal with Philly fans. Carpe diem Marcus!

Yeah, Marcus is a great fit to fill in if Hurts goes out with an injury. They won't have to change the offense, a lot of the same abilities. Even if not starting, this is a good opportunity for Marcus.

I would say Vicks 4.3 speed made him a running qb who could throw, no doubt. The other guys can throw first, which is my point. Nix has to prove his throwing all the way down the field can get you a touchdown. As for Fields this past season was an anomaly, and he was running for his life. He had 55 sacks, and was injured, repeatedly.

Nix also has the receivers Herbert didn't have, so he needs to lean on these guys. The NFL doesn't want an injured qb who hasn't proven his arm can carry a team.

I do agree Nix will have to run, and has proven his toughness, and leadership. What he needs is the sharpness of this guy, when making the decision to slide. Do the smart thing, not necessarily the easy, or glorious thing. That will get you to the NFL, play smart and show skills.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon slides down at the 1-yard line to keep the clock running and set up the Chiefs with a field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVII.

Reminder that Vick had a live arm, one of the strongest arms in the game at the time (not always the most accurate).

Both the QBs in the Super Bowl having running as part of the offense, giving their teams one more weapon the defense has to worry about.

Nix got hurt running, but could have gotten hurt getting hit in the pocket just as easily. A lot of QB  injuries happen when they are in the pocket or moving in the pocket trying to pass.

Not necessarily advocating for a lot of running by Nix, QB should probably not be your leading rusher, but the RPO offenses that are being run now need a QB that is a threat. Nix certainly is that and it is one of the reasons he was so successful when he came to Oregon. The offense played to his strengths.

My tendency is to run the QB enough to make the D respect the QB run. There have been times, even before Mari no O, that I thought the QB should have kept the ball more often in the read option and not doing so was making the offense run less efficiently.

Oregon has almost always had a QB that is a good runner. Even our pocket passers, like Herbert have had the ability to tuck it and get some yards occasionally, though that was certainly not a big part of their games.

And for me having a QB that can run is just exciting. Who didn't love it when Mariota took off and left D backs coughing in the dust behind him!

But yes, if you have only one serviceable QB, keeping him healthy is a good idea too. I get that.

  12. His time in the position is not a lot, but look at what he has done.

4 years playing in a program known for beating you with hard work and technique. Match this mindset with the kind of athletes Oregon can bring in.

They thought enough of him at Wake to keep him on the staff there after graduation.

He coached at Oregon under a head coach who is probably a better O-line coach than head coach. Players he coached rave about his preparedness and work ethic. They think this is a special hire.

He was at Hawaii one year before going to the NFL, instead of coming to Oregon to work under Lanning and Klemm.

That he was thought enough of by the NFL to coach on the D-line where he had no experience as a player or coach might say something about his ability.

I said a week or so ago that in a few days we were going to be saying, "Ahh...what, who?" and then be saying, "Wow, what a great hire."

Though many of us might be tempted to say we should have gotten someone more experienced, I have a gut feeling we are going to fall in love with this guy quickly. This is a Lanning kind of guy and so far that has proved to be pretty darn good!

  13. Now if everything works right, OC doesn't miss a beat, new O line coach puts together some pretty good O line piece and they play well together, the portal additions to the defense improve the defense, either Nix doesn't get hurt or a good back up develops... then we could be right there in the thick of things.

After all how far away were we last year, really 9 points away. Four more points vs. OSU, five more vs. UW or 4 and 5 less for our opponents. Then a win in the PAC championship game win. Boom we're in.

If everything above works right, yes Oregon could go to the playoffs. And who knows what happens when we get there.

Of course when does EVERYTHING go right?

  14. I'm going to go with:

10-2  but there are some if's.

    37-40 ppg

P12 Championship, New Years Day Bowl, 2 losses won't make the play offs next year.

I think the D will improve. Lanning has brought in some good talent ready to play in his system.

The offense is going to be even better, with one possible hickup being the O line. If the new coach comes in and the guys gel together the O line can be really good, that still has to happen.

    Wins: USC, Utah, Washington

Loses: OSU, just a feeling the Beavers are for real and going to be better than last year. Then there will be one head scratcher, at Stanford, At ASU, WASU...

This is like watching a former beauty queen get old, wrinkled, and chubby.  MOST of us get old, wrinkled, and chubby, but since we didn't start out as beauty queens, we just deal with it.  Some of the beauty queens simply cake on more eye shadow and try to squeeze their size 14s into size 6 pants, pretending they're still gorgeous and that all of today's actual beauty queens pale in comparison.

    "But...but...we're Nebraska!"  "But...but...we're Florida State!"

    "But...but...we're USC!"

Face it, kiddies:  you're not the prettiest girl in the room anymore.  But go buy more eye shadow and keep pretending, as it amuses us.

Thanks KR, I needed a good laugh today. Brilliant analogy!

Honestly, geography matters.  South Carolina is down I-95 from his Mom and Dad and Eugene is a long flight.  We are absolutely going to lose some of these.

In the era of transfer portal it's also good to remind ourselves that recruitment doesn't end until eligibility runs out...

It's still a good day for the Ducks and even better a crap day for USC!!!!

I don't know, have you ever made that drive on I 95 from the Maryland subs to Columbia SC. I'd much rather fly to Oregon.

I feel pretty confident in our offense although cohesiveness on the O-line could be an issue, especially if Klemm leaves.

That said, our "skill" position players are loaded with talent and experience with the possible exception of depth at tight end.

We need to keep Nix healthy, the offense was completely different after he got injured.  Let's start by blowing some teams out and letting him rest in the 4th quarter!

The fourth quarter rest would be good for Nix, but also give more of a cahnce of development for others in the QB room.

Give Ty a chance to run the offense with the full offense on the table when he comes in for a whole quarter, or if it's the freshman same thing.

If Nix is going to run the ball, we have to expect him to occasionally get ding up some. One or both of the other guys have to be ready. Reps in practice are one thing, but you have to have real game reps to be ready when the time comes.

  18. Remember the handler may also have a lotto do with track. If he has the potential in track it looks like he has, he could be making a lot of money there and soon.

With everything involved now in football, NIL, portal, NFL potential etc. you add track to that and Olympics, track endorsements (that's basically NIL should not get in the way of eligibility), it would be almost neglectful not to have someone knowledgeable to help guide you through all that.

If it can pass muster with Mom, I think he's a Duck.

BTW, take a look at some highlights of this guy. I know everybody is saying he is going to play offense, but dang this kid can play some D too.

  19. Needed at the U:

    Offensive Coordinator

Requirements, leave your imagination at the door, be physical, play slow, let me repeat that play slow, no down field passing, no chunk plays...

Must be comfortable with micromanagement of the head coach who doesn't really know what he's doing.

If this frustrates you to no end you must be willing to leave after one season with a nice severance package.

    Any takers?
