AS PAC-12 SLATE BEGINS, DUCKS EMBRACE POSTSEASON MENTALITY "This weekend is our first Super Regional of many to come," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "What we've done up to this point to prepare for our first Super Regional, I like. And I'm excited to see this group get out there and compete." In years past, Lombardi said, the Ducks worked over the course of the season to capture that postseason mentality. This spring, they tried to bring it from the very outset. The results so far? A 16-4 record, including 3-1 against ranked opponents. Led by seniors Allee Bunker and Terra McGowan, "Version 5" of Oregon softball under Lombardi is playing with a sense of camaraderie and fun epitomized by the Ducks' jubilation when their third fifth-year senior, Katelyn Howard, got her first career hit last weekend, and followed it with her first homer. Those seniors are also bringing a sense of maturity to the team's approach, focusing on process over outcomes. Oregon baseball using previous Pac-12 experience to prepare for opener against No. 16 UCLA The true test is about to begin for Oregon baseball. The Ducks have gotten off to a solid 8-3 start against three capable non-conference schools. This weekend, they’ll face off against their first Pac-12 opponent of the year, and it won’t be a luxurious matchup. They’ll be taking on No. 16 UCLA, a team off to a hot start with dominant pitching. But the Ducks know they’ve been here before. “They’re a Pac-12 school, so everyone’s gonna be good,” Oregon pitcher Jace Stoffal said. “Even the worst record in the Pac-12 is still a good school.” UCLA pitchers Alonzo Tredwell and Kelly Austin have posted ERAs of 1.06 and 1.17, respectively. Along with a strong bullpen, the Bruins own a 1.78 team ERA, limiting opponents to a .206 batting average while striking out 136 in 106 innings. It resulted in a 10-2 start to the 2023 campaign. How Oregon came back to beat Washington State after leading by as many as 19 points After having their chances to close the door on the Cougars multiple times and failing to do so, the Ducks found themselves down three with less than four minutes to play. Oregon's defense held the Cougars scoreless for the game's final three minutes, N'Faly Dante scored the team's go-ahead basket and then created two Washington State turnovers to secure the 75-70 victory. "Well, it was a heck of a game. I had put on the board before the game it's going to be a 40-minute fight," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. "Got a lot of respect for Washington State, really experienced guards that can all shoot it. Gueye is a handful inside." No. 1 seed UCLA showdown looms large for Ducks in Pac-12 semifinals The Ducks are still working their way up the NCAA Tournament at-large ladder and are one win away from playing in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Up next for the Ducks is a showdown with the league's regular-season champion and No. 1 seed UCLA. A win for Oregon will likey put the Ducks right on the bubble for next week's tournament and a loss is likely going to keep them out of the NCAA Tournament. The season could truly be on the line Friday night. "Well, it's the next game. We really got to focus. UCLA's really well-coached. They're really talented. They have got a couple of freshmen that are really good and they got a couple three vets that are really, really good," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman after the team's win against Washington State. Can Oregon Ducks limit Jaime Jaquez, upset top-seeded UCLA in Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament? If UO can avoid three losses to the same opponent in a single season for just the third time in Dana Altman’s tenure it’ll earn a spot in the conference championship game, where it can remove all doubt about its postseason fate by winning the automatic bid. “We know what we’ve got to do: We’ve got to out-rebound people and we’ve got to defend,” Altman said. “We haven’t been successful against UCLA twice because they out-rebounded us. They got us in the second half. We led both games at half and they just out-rebounded us the second half. So we’re going to have to do a better job there and we’re just going to have to have a much better second half.” Can Oregon Ducks limit Jaime Jaquez, upset top-seeded UCLA in Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament? I bumped into Dana Altman at a roulette table in Sin City once. This was years ago during the Pac-12 Conference Tournament. Altman’s Oregon Ducks were humming along, playing great basketball. I was walking through the MGM Grand Casino one morning and I saw the coach bellied-up at a table. Altman wasn’t gambling. The table wasn’t even open. He just happened to come upon the empty chairs, stopped, sat down, and relaxed for a few minutes. I walked by and stopped to chat. Altman insisted he wasn’t much of a gambler. I beg to differ... Ducks Advance To Pac-12 Semifinals Oregon raced out to the lead, endured a three-point barrage by WSU and made big plays down the stretch to win Thursday's quarterfinal. "We did what we had to do to advance," UO coach Dana Altman said. "It could have been a little easier. … But this is a team that has hit 14 threes on six different occasions, and leads the league in three-point shooting. No lead is safe with them, and we knew that." 5-star QB Dylan Raiola to visit Eugene for Oregon's Spring Game We already knew that 5-star EDGE Dylan Stewart and 5-star S KJ Bolden would be in attendance for visits to Oregon that weekend, but now news from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong shows that 5-star QB Dylan Raiola is planning a visit to Eugene for that weekend as well. Raiola, who was previously committed to Ohio State, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 QB in the 2024 class, and the No. 1 overall player in the class as well. After decommitting from the Buckeyes, it’s been said that he is strongly looking at the Ducks as a potential suitor, as well as the USC Trojans, Georgia Bulldogs, and Nebraska Cornhuskers. If the Ducks can make a big impression on him when he is on campus in late April, it could go a long way in his recruitment, and could potentially convince him to come back to Eugene for an official visit down the line as well. Jermaine Couisnard says he's coming back to Oregon for next season Dana Altman's last question Thursday night was about the parity in college basketball season and why there are so many teams playing so close to one another. He spoke about the veteran leadership teams have and the experience upperclassmen have because of the COVID-19 waiver the NCAA issued all players from the 2020-21 season. His answer included pitches to two players sitting next to them about how he was hoping they'd come back for another season to give the Ducks that same advantage.
