  1. 3 Keys to victory for the Oregon Ducks against the Utah Utes On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks will face off against the Utah Utes in what will surely be one of their toughest tests of the season. The Utah Utes are without their best QB Cam Rising — as they have been all season — but in recent weeks, Bryson Barnes has emerged as a strong leader for the Utes’ offense. Sione Vaki, a safety, has also started playing RB for Utah and has seen a lot of success. The Ducks will have their hands full on Saturday, but they also have the tools necessary to win this game. Below, are the three things I think are most necessary for Oregon to do to leave Salt Lake City with another tally in the win column this Saturday... 4. Oregon Ducks vs Utah Utes: 5 Things to Watch The last time the Oregon Ducks went into Rice Eccles Stadium and came away with a win, it was on a game winning touchdown pass from a hometown kid nobody knew named Justin Herbert. Upsetting the #12 Utes at home would be one of the few bright spots in a 4-8 season for the Ducks. This year, the contest is between a pair of top 15 teams, each with one loss, and each with a solid path to a conference title, and perhaps even a playoff berth. Each team is off to a new conference after the season as #8 Oregon heads to the Big10 and #13 Utah to the Big12, making this the final regular season showdown between the 2 teams that have consistently been at the top of the soon-to-be-former Pac 12. There is a lot riding on a game that brings ESPN’s College Gameday to town. Here are the top 5 things to watch... 5. Injury Report: Updated look at injury news for No. 8 Oregon and No. 13 Utah It’s Week 9 of the college football season and the two injury reports for Oregon and Utah are very different. The Ducks are relatively healthy with just one player definitely out, but the Utes have a long laundry list of injured players that are out for the season, or dealing with certain nagging injuries going into this week. The Utes’ injuries haven’t seemed to slow them down much as Utah is 6-1 overall, 3-1 in conference, and are coming off an impressive 34-32 win at USC. Quarterback Cam Rising is the biggest name on the list, but the all-Pac-12 performer has been out all season. Utah is just now getting used to the fact Rising will not be available in 2023. Oregon received a bit of a scare last week when running back Bucky Irving went down late in the Washington State game, he should be good to go against Utah on Saturday. Here is an updated look on injuries that you should be aware of going into this game... 6. 3 Reasons Why The Oregon Ducks Will Beat Utah On Saturday On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks bounced back from a tough loss to Washington by defeating Washington State 38-24. Bo Nix was 18-25 for 293 yards and 2 TDs. Bucky Irving had 15 carries for 129 yards and 2 TDS on the ground. With the victory, Oregon moved to 6-1 on the season. This Saturday, Oregon will compete in another pivotal Pac-12 matchup against the battle-tested #13 Utah Utes. The Utah Utes have had to deal with a number of injuries. QB Cam Rising and TE Brant Kuithe are out for the season. As a matter of fact, seven players are out for the season for the Utes. Nevertheless, the Utah Utes remain undaunted. For the fourth year in a row, they defeated the USC Trojans. This latest victory was due to a last-second field goal that left Caleb Williams and the USC fanbase miserable. However, the Oregon Ducks are a different animal for Utah to be worried about. The Oregon Ducks have a better defense and greater balance in their offense. They will present a challenge that will be too much for the Utah Utes... 3 Reasons Why The Oregon Ducks Will Beat Utah On Saturday OREGONSPORTSNEWS.COM On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks bounced back from a tough loss to Washington by defeating Washington State 38-24. 7. Learning to master the pressure It’s undeniable that those who have the ball in their hands –– those fans call superstars, gamechangers or legends –– are the ones that attract praise. They’re the ones on billboards, hoisting trophies and selling jerseys. If one asks a young child (or even a seasoned adult fan), they’re far more likely to cite Bo Nix or Marcus Mariota as their “favorite player” than any other member of the team. But that’s just it. It’s members of the team, even those who take the field three or four times a game for a single play, who deserve the label of “gamechanger.” Because a gamechanger is that player who has the will and ability to shoulder the pressure of tens of thousands of fans in a stadium –– of millions around the world –– and channel it into something that allows them to attempt an act of brilliance. Who fills that void in America’s most-watched sport, if not the quarterback? Camden Lewis is the Oregon Ducks’ fifth-year kicker. He’s gone from something of an unknown quantity in 2019 to one of the team’s veteran fixtures. In his words in an interview during Oregon’s 2023 media day from 247Sports’ YouTube channel, “I feel very old.” In the Cornelius, N.C. native’s five years in Eugene, he’s improved exponentially, bettering his field goal make percentage in every complete season but 2020, and defining what a kicker can be. Lewis told reporters at Oregon’s 2023 media day, “I’ve tried to focus on [improving] kickoffs…but honestly it’s just confidence –- you don’t get nervous any more after this long [and] I feel like a different person after this long.” That confidence is what drives gamechangers in high-pressure moments, when adrenaline is coursing through their veins. This is very good article as very few words are written about kickers during the season... To access the details in the Daily Emerald, click here.
  8. Ranking Oregon's top 10 players vs. Washington State according to PFF grades The Oregon Ducks got back down to business last week against the Washington State Cougars, and they got a much-needed win to bounce back following their first loss of the season. It was a strong performance from Oregon’s offense, putting up 38 points and over 500 yards of offense with nearly 250 of those yards coming on the ground. Bucky Irving and Jordan James ran wild, while QB Bo Nix had an efficient day distributing the football. On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars were able to put up some numbers, but the Ducks stepped up when it was needed the most and got a relatively stressless victory. So which players performed the best in that game? As always, we turn to Pro Football Focus’ grades to see where everyone graded out... 9. Series History: A look back at the history of Oregon vs. Utah The Oregon Ducks will face off against the Utah Utes this Saturday for the final matchup between these two schools as members of the Pac-12. The era of these teams being in the same conference has been short, but it has also been fruitful. Some of the Ducks’ best games over the last ten years have come against Utah. Most recently, Oregon took down the Utes 20-17 in Autzen Stadium last November. The game came a week after Oregon dropped its second game of the season to Washington. Bo Nix had suffered an injury late in the Washington game and was hindered throughout most of the game against Utah. But, late in the game when it mattered most, Nix used his legs to pick up a game-clinching first down for the Ducks. Oregon has an all-time record of 24-12 over Utah and a 6-4 record in the Pac-12 era. Since the Utes joined the Pacific Athletic Conference in 2011, the Ducks have had five head coaches, while Utah has remained steadfast with Kyle Whittingham — one of the longest-tenured coaches in the sport... 13. These rankings are from the College Football Network... There’s another new No. 1 quarterback on the list of top college quarterbacks. Oregon Ducks star QB Bo Nix assumes the top spot after his consistent play hasn’t seen a drop-off like the others vying for the top. Before we get to the rankings, it’s imperative to set the tone and let you understand how these rankings are formed. Like always, the film-watching portion of these rankings dictates a heavy portion of the weight on where a player landed. Injury history, head coach or offensive coordinator changes and subsequent implementation of the scheme this year, roster turnover, and general quarterback mechanics all over the field were also added into the mix. Stats mean a lot, but they’re not the end-all, be-all for college quarterbacks. As always, this is not a list of their pro-level abilities. We’re not looking at them as NFL Draft prospects — I leave that to our friends at Pro Football Network now. Instead, these college quarterback rankings are solely based on how each player has fared in their time in college or, in some cases, back to their high school days. Just like our preseason rankings, the film through this point of the season has largely been added to a wealth of information and data at hand for every quarterback across the country... 14. Oregon softball finishes fall season undefeated with 28-10 victory over Southern Oregon in 12 innings It was all Oregon once again as the Ducks finished their fall campaign with an emphatic 28-10 victory over the Western Oregon Raiders in 12 innings. Oregon’s pitching was solid once again. Taylour Spencer started the game for the Ducks as Spencer, Raegan Breedlove, Elise Sokolsky, and Stevie Hansen each threw three innings for Oregon. Striking out four, Sokolsky– who pitched sparingly in 2023 – was particularly effective on Sunday for Oregon. “It was nice just to see her go,” head coach Melyssa Lombardi said after the game. “You could see how much her ball moves, I was pumped to get her three innings today.” Western Oregon’s total runs were deceptive. The Raiders scored their first run of the game on a second inning single, the rest of the Raiders’ runs would come during innings in which a runner began the inning on base in order to give the hitting team a chance to practice situational hitting. Oregon’s pitchers allowed just two earned runs on the day and just five throughout the fall. “Big picture, I thought we had a really really good fall,” Lombardi said. “You can see we’ve got a lot of different weapons, you could see we are new in some spots and whatnot. But just overall, I’m pleased with what we did in the fall.” To access more details in the Daily Emerald, click here.

The Blackbears will play in Salem and are one of 16 franchises in the AFL, which is scheduled to begin play in April. “Oregon is renowned for having a rabid football fan base, so we’re absolutely thrilled to bring a new franchise to this market,” AFL commissioner Lee Hutton said in a statement. “There’s no better person to lead the Oregon Blackbears than a true Oregon star like Kayvon who understands the fans’ insatiable appetite for success.” Blackbears’ coach Chuck Jones has said he is out recruiting players and the Blackbears will hold an open tryout on Nov. 4. Scouting Report: A closer look at the Oregon defense vs Utah offense matchup The No. 13 Utes turn their attention to another crucial big time matchup this weekend as the No. 9 Oregon Ducks and ESPN College Gameday come to Salt Lake City for this one. The Ducks come to Utah with a 6-1, 3-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of rival Washington, in an epic game that ended as a 36-33 loss. 19. Dan Lanning provides comments on Michigan sign-stealing investigation For the past week, the biggest storyline in college football has been the ongoing investigation into the Michigan Wolverines program and its sign-stealing. The news dropped on Friday by ESPN's Pete Thamel regarding Connor Stalions, a Michigan assistant, traveling across the country to steal signs against upcoming opponents. In Thamel's reporting, Stalions would purchase over 30 tickets to games across multiple years to multiple Big Ten games and non-conference games, including a matchup between No. 6 Oregon and No. 25 Washington in 2022, first reported by Jon Wilner of the Mercury News. "Yeah. I don't have a lot of really thoughts on it. I haven't been focused on it that much," said Oregon head coach Dan Lanning on the investigation. "I mean, ultimately, I think that'll all sort itself out." For Lanning, that was not the first time Stalions had ventured to watch a game with him involved. According to Thamel's reporting, Stalions had traveled to the SEC Championshiop game between Georgia and Alabama, where Lanning's Georgia Bulldogs would fall to Alabama. In the College Football Playoffs, Michigan would meet Lanning's Bulldogs in the 2021 Orange Bowl, a game Georgia would win, 34-11. 21. Solomon Williams Has Oregon in Top Two Schools, Per Report Over the weekend Oregon hosted Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day edge Solomon Williams for an official visit. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound defender had Oregon in his top five schools heading into the trip along with Alabama, Clemson, Texas and Texas A&M. Coming out of this weekend's trip for the Washington State game, there's increasingly strong buzz about Oregon's standing. According to a report from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong, Williams now has Oregon in his top two schools. The Ducks have one edge rusher committed in the 2024 class in Yuma (Ariz.) Catholic standout Jaxson Jones, and they would certainly like to add Williams to the fold. What makes things more interesting is that they continue to pick up momentum to land five-star Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic edge rusher Elijah Rushing. Oregon built significant recruiting momentum when they landed five-star Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei defensive lineman Aydin Breland, and it looks like they're working to parlay that into their recruitment of Williams. In addition to Wiltfong's big update on Williams, Chad Simmons of On3 Sports was able to speak with the Florida product, and he told Simmons that he liked what he saw with Oregon's development at his position. "They blew my expectations out of the water and really made it clear where development for the edge position is at," he told Simmons. It's worth noting that Oregon had two of their three true freshmen edge rushers record sacks against Washington state with Williams in attendance. To access details in this article, click here.

  24. Where Oregon's defense ranks nationally in key statistics after win over Washington State The Oregon Ducks’ defense has been one of the main reasons that Dan Lanning’s team has found such success so far this season. Early in the year, when the level of competition was far less than what it is now, the defense was completely dominant, putting up some of the best numbers in the nation. While the defense has still been very good, and a huge part of why Oregon is continuing to win games, the numbers have dropped a little bit because of the increased level of competition. That is certainly the case for the past two weeks, where the Ducks faced two of the best offenses in the Pac-12 in Washington and Washington State. Despite those challenges, the defense held up admirably. Here’s where they now rank nationally in some key statistics after Week 8 of the season...
