  2. Oregon head coach Dana Altman discusses the rumors of a potential retirement. Dana Altman will complete his 14th regular season as head coach of the Oregon men's basketball program this weekend, and despite some rumors and whispers he could be close to retiring, Altman is committed to coaching at Oregon for the extended future. "I don't know who said it, I know I didn't," said Altman. ESPN.com reported last week that the 65-year-old Altman was rumored to be considering retirement. CBSSports on Tuesday reported as well that Altman could be considering it. That's news to Altman as he remains steadfast in leading the program he's built up at Oregon. "I haven't talked to anyone, so whoever is saying that, it's pure speculation," said Altman. "I'm not going anywhere, unless this school tells me to. I'm not retiring, that's for sure." Oregon could potentially have a young and exciting program heading into the 2024-25 season. Freshman point guard Jackson Shelstad is poised to be a Pac-12 All-Freshman this season, while fellow freshman forward Kwame Evans could also play his way into that all-conference team as well. Juniors Nate Bittle, Jadrian Tracey, and Ben Rigsby all have years of eligibility and have been starters throughout different parts of their careers. Seniors Kario Oquendo and Keeshawn Barthelemy could also return for their extra COVID year if they choose to do so. 6. How would a college football Super League look? Let’s imagine a 48-team version Since I’m now accepting the likelihood that there will be some sort of college football Super League sooner rather than later, we may as well imagine how that might look. History tells us that this process is never clean, so this probably won’t nail the format. But I’m going to try to think like a television executive, since those probably are the people whose opinions would carry the most weight. First, let’s assume the Big Ten and SEC continue to work together but don’t actually merge. It would be cleaner if they did, but we’re now dealing with dueling TV networks. Let’s also assume this is just for football. The other sports remain governed by the NCAA as we know it, and their championship formats remain the same even if some schools change conferences. 9. The B1G 10: Big Ten, SEC send Playoff message to everybody: Accept ... or else Want to know why the SEC and Big Ten have done a 180 on their Playoff format preference, pushing instead for a format that gives each 3 automatic qualifiers and guarantees a top 2 seed — and a first-round bye in the tournament — in every Playoff, every year? Because they don’t trust the Playoff committee to get it right. “I don’t think we can ignore the elephant in the room,” a Big Ten athletic director told Saturday Tradition. “There are too many opportunities for (a Playoff vote) to go horribly wrong.” The B1G 10: Big Ten, SEC send Playoff message to everybody: Accept … or else SATURDAYTRADITION.COM The B1G and SEC want guaranteed bids and seeds in the Playoff. 16. After a couple of long off-season months, the grass is starting to grow and trees are getting ready to bloom. Spring is coming in Eugene, and with it comes the long-awaited return of football for the Oregon Ducks. A lot will look different in this new year for Dan Lanning and his team, with several of last year’s top players moving onto the NFL, including guys like Bo Nix, Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Brandon Dorlus. All of that is not to mention the fact that the Ducks are joining the Big Ten, and have a new-look conference to get used to on top of a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff to strive for. It’s safe to say that there are a lot of things to talk about going into this spring season, and a lot of storylines to discuss. 24. As Oregon and Washington head to Big Ten, a new chapter in the rivalry begins The landscape of college football is going to look a lot different in 2024 than it has in the past, and that is especially true for the Oregon Ducks. While the expanded College Football Playoff will have an impact on every team in the nation, Oregon is one of several teams that are moving to a new conference, joining the Big Ten along with Washington, USC, and UCLA. The new expanded conference offers a ton of exciting matchups for the Ducks, but it could potentially change some things that Oregon fans have come to know and love over the last several decades. In particular, there’s a good chance that rivalries will look quite a bit different in the future. Oregon will still play the likes of Washington, Oregon State, and USC going forward, but with the addition of games against Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and several other Big Ten teams, there’s a chance that some of the existing rivalries get watered down. This past week on the Sco-ing Long Podcast, co-hosts Jonathan Stewart and Zachary Neel discussed this. In particular, they talked about Oregon’s rivalry with the Huskies. While it definitely stood as the biggest rivalry for the Ducks throughout their time in the Pac-12, Neel argues that it might lose some of its steam going forward, for various reasons. Oregon and Washington set for new chapter in rivalry starting in 2024 DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM The Oregon Ducks and Washington Huskies will likely enter a new chapter of their long-standing rivalry as new members of the Big Ten.
  25. Which Big Ten teams will be the biggest rivals for Oregon going forward? For the past several decades in the world of the Pac-10, and then the Pac-12, the Oregon Ducks have been comfortable in the fact that they knew who their biggest rivals were. You had Oregon State, you had Washington, you had Stanford, you had USC, and you even had Utah to an extent later in the lifespan of the conference. Things are going to change in the future, though. With Oregon’s jump to the Big Ten Conference, we are losing a lot of rivalries that became commonplace over the years. The Ducks will still play the likes of Washington, USC, and Oregon State going forward, but now they have a new pool of teams that will be on the yearly schedule, and a whole pool of potential rivalries to jump into. This past week on the Sco-ing Long Podcast co-hosts Jonathan Stewart and Zachary Neel discussed which teams in the Big Ten would end up being the biggest rivals for the Ducks going forward. To decide who the best candidates were, both Stewart and Neel assigned a number value to each team in the conference from 1-10 (10 being the strongest) for how fierce the upcoming rivalry would be. Here’s what they came up with, and some of their reasoning. Which Big Ten teams are most likely to be rivals for the Oregon Ducks? DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM A look at which teams in the Big Ten will likely be the biggest rivals for the Oregon Ducks when it comes to the new expanded conference.
