Exactly, and I’d add to look at it this way…11 of the final top 12 this year will be in the SEC and B1G next year, and 5 of those teams had 2 losses this year. With them all playing each other more, probably 8 of the top 12 will have an additional loss. I don’t see anyway there are not multiple teams with 3 losses making the field

I was just conversing with a DUCK friend and we both said the same thing, UW has been very lucky this year and yes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I still get incensed that after every reception the UW receivers claim they were interfered with. They did it non stop on 10/14 and also in Vegas on 12/1.

Speaking further with my friend, we also commented about DeBoer's coaching  during the last few minutes which CalBear95 also so astutely pointed out.  I too think DeBoer is a very good coach but just goes to show that in the heat of battle some coaches don't make the right calls and to further add, Saban not over ruling his OC on that last run play, well that might merit a whole thread of it's own.  Point is it's easy for all of us to know exactly what to do from the comfort of our sofa, but in real time in a pressure situation it's tough.

I get coaches get paid the big bucks but we sometimes forget they are human too.

It will be interesting to see if Lanning had a Penix problem, not so much a DeBoer issue. We must remember Mariø beat DeBoer so the magic act isn't just the guy on the sideline. Last night Penix again proved he is the real deal.

I also want to see if we need another Dye type player on defense. I mean a leader who has that magical ability to lead, will the defense to make those plays that seemed to sometimes elude us. Maybe a fully healthy Justin Jacobs will be that guy, or my pick freshman Brayden Platt. Oregon needs guys on the field who will a win, and others follow.

A team needs a great coach and supporting cast of coaches who meld into a unit of leaders. I see this beginning to more fully happen. I believe this was one element holding us back. In the future I think we will see the systems and processes more fully integrated into a team firing on all systems under Lannings vision.

The last element is going to be having another Nix type leader at QB, hopefully Dillon will be that guy. As mentioned we then need that same on field leadership on defense. I think that will happen too, and I won't even begin to talk about the special teams. Hopefully special teams gets gets it going as the other components have. We will need all things working. As we saw with Michigan last night, one part can potentially kill a great season.

Hayward- you hit on something that has stood out to me since Dan came on board.   He knows how to cultivate team leaders and team chemistry.  What do I mean by that?   He seems to understand the personalities of his players much better than his predecessors (note that plural designation) and understands how to tap into what makes each person unique.   It's clear the players are willing to run through a wall for him.

Tez commented post game yesterday that Dan knows how to push the right buttons at the right time.  The fact the players recognize that says something.

Sure Bo is gone as are JPJ and others who were probably team leaders behind the scenes.   Bassa, Burch and maybe Gabriel will possibly be some of the guys who will take on the leadership role next year.   I hope everyone on the team carefully observed how Bo conducted himself because that is the blue print for team leadership.

Dan will continue his Wednesday  "Get Real' team dinners during the off season which nothing football related can be discussed, and I am sure they will continue their players only team meetings on Thursdays.   These are the kinds of things that build culture and comradery.

The bigger more urgent issue is now that Bo and Casey Rogers are gone who will be the designated Lanning babysitters?????😉

  3. Suggest Googling Leavitt.  There's some serious skeletons in his closet from his USF days.  He was never going to get a head coaching job.

    SYNDICATION.BLEACHERREPORT.COM

The internal-external investigation conducted by the University of South Florida documents that per...

The other issue with Leavitt was he never moved to Eugene when he coached at UO.  He kept his home in Colorado and rented a hotel room during the season.  That totally aggravated MC.  Aggravated is my way of not using the politically incorrect vernacular.

He was a loose cannon at events and was eventually not allowed to attend any events involving donors.  Also toward the end of his tenure he was not allowed on the road to recruit.

I was at an event at which both MC and JL were in attendance and the tension was so thick you could have cut it with a knife.  Safe to say MC hated Leavitt

The most active current thread on Canes Insight is titled "It takes more than just fancy recruiting."

    It's gold, Jerry! Gold!

Well, at least the picture is getting clearer for them.

No refunds, no returns.  He's yours Miami!

  5. Mario doing his usual thing.  Bad game management, horrible play calling and the Canes getting multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Many think of Kenny Wheaton's play as one of the greatest days in Oregon football history and rightly so. December 6th 2021, (the day of Mario's resignation) is right up there in my book.

  6. I was a huge Helfrich fan in the beginning and remember having a very animated debate with a friend who said Oregon should have hired Chris Peterson instead of MH.

I was also in Autzen Stadium on the day of the 70-21 debacle and never in my life as a long time season ticket holder had I ever left the stadium before a game was over no matter the score till that day.   I was so upset.  That is the only time to this day I got up and walked out.

I had an odd feeling that day that Helfrich was not the guy.  Can't explain it but it was something I felt.   Then unfortunately I started hearing things from program insiders about how Helfrich had no control over that team and that there was no discipline.  One insider told me Helfrich lost the locker room before the season even started.

All in the past now but I gotta think Fentress heard some of this same stuff but for some inexplicable reason just can't let go and as stated, he likes the clicks.

  7. Yeah, the whole thing is just odd.

My friend who lives in PDX listens to him on Talking Ducks and says he still goes on about how horrible the fan base and administration were to Helfrich.  No ill will on my part towards him but Fentress even after 7 years just can't let go.

It's also telling that Helfrich's name never surfaces for any openings.   Not saying that might not change but he has been doing TV games for awhile now.

  8. He posted this diatribe on Twitter (X) yesterday.  What is with him and this on going Helfrich thing?

I don't live in Portland so not sure what the genesis of this is but wow, it's beyond absurd.

So we’re just going to pretend that Lanning wouldn’t be about 16-10 without the current transfer portal (not available in 2015-16) and that someone isn’t writing big fat checks to a lot of these recruits while bringing up Helfrich ??

    Ya’ll live in wild world.

But again, 7 years running now, I’ll remind ya: Call me when the Ducks reach the national championship game again. I’ve been anxiously waiting. Y’all been slobbering over recruiting classes for 8 years and Oregon has done what?

More coaches (3) than PAC titles (1 legit in 2019 loaded with Helfrich-era staff recruits that led to the most NFL combine invites in program history in 2020, and one COVID aided) with ZERO playoff appearances. That’s what.

It’s amazing how some so childishly must marginalize past Oregon coaches in order to prop up current coaches. Actually, it’s embarrassing. Helfrich has FOUR conference title rings and coached in TWO national title games. The only two Oregon has ever played in And, oh yeah, he recruited, developed and guided Marcus Mariota to the only Heisman in program history. No real Oregon fan should ever disrespect Helfrich. Dude loved Oregon more than Chip, Willie, Mario and Dan combined. Also, still attacking me because I believed it was wrong for that staff to be fired is borderline Neanderthal behavior. Imagine hating the staff of Helfrich Pellum, Greatwood, Campbell, Lubick, Osborne, Neal so much that you routinely attack someone who backed them after ONE losing season two years after producing the greatest season in program history (2014). Lol Ridiculous.

And, still doing so 7 years since their firing while celebrating a bunch of recruits who you know hardly anything about beyond the fact that recruiting services placed a bunch of stars by their names. And we all know that most of them will ultimately end up in the transfer portal. It’s pathetic and sad.

One has to wonder if Lincoln Riley is another Mark Helfrich.  An offensive wonderkind but lacks the skills to truly build a football program...

Funny you should say this.  I remember watching the UO/USC game in Nov and thnking this reminds me the Mark Helfrich days.   Says all the right things, has some recruiting chops but can't put it all together.

    Time will tell.

I wonder what the By-laws actually say.  I wonder if there is any context behind them.

Does the contract actually say you must stay in the conference the final year, and you will not get paid?  Was that the intent when USC and UCLA moved on ( that they would not get a dime for any revenue they generated for the conference)?

I want to see the contract.

Apparently JC is the expert on the contract.😉

  11. Canzano is in the entertainment business and will say whatever gets him clicks.

I find him obsequious and patronizing.   He will do whatever it takes to get the interview and then later knife the person in the back.   You can certainly tell DL has him figured out.   He gives him a few morsels  and then gives him the perfunctory answers and John thinks he is all good and tight with Dan.

  12. Justin did not turn down the job.  Justin was given what was termed a 'courtesy interview'.  Was his narrative that he turned it down?  Yes, because he parlayed it into a contract extension at Cal.

I know someone who was on the search committee.   They had their eye on one candidate and when that person expressed mutual interest and the conversations progressed, everyone on that committee knew they had the right person.  Were there others who expressed interest and were they interviewed?   Yes there were.

BTW the way, the committee was comprised of several people and it was just not 'the big donors' .
