And to think they were not even a top 50 defense prior to Dan’s arrival.
Mario cycled through DCs - Leavitt, Avalos, DeRutyer for sure.

Imagine their grief IF one of them were to flip?

Word is that his girlfriend is going to UT on a soccer scholarship and he did not want to be so far away from her. He supp went supposedly asked others on the team at UO how they manage this sort of thing and all told him it can be done. Apparently he was not convinced.

I just hate when the teacher asks me to summarize chapter 8 and I only read the first 4.
Yikes, this was not a surprise event. He had some time to prepare a few remarks.
Beyond cringeworthy.

Supposedly had family coming in from out of town to celebrate and due to the airline computer fiasco
today their flights were canceled.
But agree the extra time is concerning.

Yep - seems like LSU made a big time late push

John just can't help himself. I get his ' I love the little guy' message but enough.
Out of one side of his mouth he blames the schools for their lack of marketing and branding, then he wants us all to feel sorry for them because they got left behind.
Hey John, we see what you are doing there. It's pretty straight forward, I need Bray and Dickert to come on my radio show so I have to patronize them in a way gives new meaning to obsequiousness and then I need to look like I am not showing any bias so periodically I will criticize them.

I am so confused, they are an academically prowess institution with so many esteemed alums who are so affluent that one would think their NIL coffers would be over flowing.

Au contraire to the U$C fan's declaration. In our heart of hearts we of OBD will never tire of, nor limit our enjoyment of Oregon's curb-stomping, birch-slapping and rent-free occupation of the cranial vaults of the Troyboys.
I for one have decades of built up schadenfreude when it comes to the University of Spoiled Children. An itch that I have only begun to scratch.
The bigger question in my opinion is do the troyboys have cranial vaults?

Great article. Hoping it continues.
The indicators for success are trending in the right direction. Yes, Dan can recruit, but all indications are he can coach as well and has surrounded himself with good people. Remember what Steve Jobs said 'it doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do. Hire smart people so they can tell you what to do'. I think Dan (unlike his predecessor whom I have never hidden my disdain for) does this and it's created a culture of accountability and success THUS FAR.
Yes, we all wish the UW games ended in a different manner last year BUT if Dan and his team learned from that then yes Oregon will be a big time player as long as DL is here. His ability to recruit will only grow.

Hope I'm wrong, but this seems like TAMU might win this one.

I read those comments from.the USC keyboard warriors and I can't help but think of the Mark Twain axiom, ‘ better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt’.

Wow- I know coaches say they don't pay attention to stuff like this but having briefly met Mario and heard about his huge ego, my guess is he is paying attention.

I don't know about DL being the best recruiter in the nation, but I think it is pretty definitive that U of O as an organization and alumni is the best recruiter in the country. Recruiting at such a high level with such a dearth of local talent is extraordinary.
A tip of the cap all the way around and especially for Marshall Malchow who is continuing to do what he did at TAMU.
Malchow and DL are joined at the hip.and together their vision is what is driving this.

There was more to his departure than just money. Lots of behind the scenes stuff. I’ll respectfully leave it at that since its water under the bridge now.

I am much more interested in recruiting because it's obvious Dan has a methodology and his BS meter (hope I can say that) is very finely tuned. His predecessors just looked at stars. I get the star gazing but a good recruiter digs in and looks for the little things.
Dan said something awhile back that has always resonated with me because it's what I have relied upon for many years in my line of work, building relationships. And to further amplify that, a part of building relationships is listening for what someone DOES not say. I have heard from good sources Dan is 'very astute and in tune' given his youth. He clearly learned well from Nick, Kirby and Mike Norvell. I am sure there are others but those stand out obviously.

At this point in his career I doubt Mario changes too much. He is too insecure (deep down) and lacks the ability to do any self introspection. Again, (I know I have said it multiple times so sorry for the repetition) Mario will NEVER be comfortable not being the smartest man in the room.
Any time he hires anyone outside of his 'circle of trust' they either end up leaving or he gets rid of them. He brought Salavea' and Miraball and Feld with him to Miami because they tell him what he wants to hear.
The net here IMO is Mario will continue to look like he 'walks the walk' but I think we all pretty much know he can't.
I realize this sounds harsh and I honestly don't want to see him fail but he had generational talent at Oregon and could not figure out how to use it. What makes us think he will figure it out with Ward and Martinez?

This article gives much creedance to the axiom that it’s better to remain silent and let people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Was in existence during his entire lifetime. He saw the demise but didn't have to live it.
When I met him at the BCS game in AZ, I told him he was blocking my view at a Stones concert three years prior. He then went on a typical "Walton rant" practically describing every song Van Morrison did in the opening and then the Stones' set.
One of a kind. I enjoyed his broadcasting 75+% of the time.
Thanks for the memories Bill, especially this one.
RIP
A Duck fan and a Stones fan is a beautiful combo. I totally relate. My passion for the Ducks and the Stones is the exact same as Bill's was for the Dead.

I get Deion hyping his program. A good coach does that. BUT, there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. Unfortunately Deion is not going about it in the best way and neither are his sons.
Maybe they will learn. I hope they do. Going to the Big12 won't be a cake walk for them. Whittingham is formidable and knows how to coach as do others in the B12. Deion would be smart to observe and learn from as many of them as he can.
Hype is one thing, delivering on the hype is a whole other realm.

Tennessee Reporter Says Oregon's Strategy is "Just Go Buy Us a Class"; Dan Lanning Proving Otherwise
in Our Beloved Ducks

Apparently this reporter has very selective memory. Tennessee paid big money for Nico Lamaleava.
Those in the know in Knoxville have said he was paid $8 million.
I guess that doesn't count????
