  1. Coaches always talk about paying attention to the details.

Well Dan and the Oregon staff apparently do so as well.   A poster on another board pointed shared that Sione Laulea is LDS and his faith is extremely important to him and his family.

Of the schools recruiting him (final 3- UO; USC & Miami) only ONE  of them took the time on his recruiting visit to take him to church.  Yes, Oregon arranged for him to check out the local church and attend a meeting there.   There is some speculation that this tipped the scales in Oregon's' favor.

  2. What is most perplexing is Mario just continues to do the same dumb stuff over and over.   You would think he would learn.  Stubborn is one thing, stupid is another.

I liked Mario in the very beginning of his tenure.   I had an opportunity to meet him early on and found him pleasant but there was always something about him that bothered me and I could never quite put my finger on it.  It was not something I spent too much time contemplating.

Then he left and Dan came and the more I listened to Dan early on I realized what it was.   Dan is authentic and real.   Mario is not.  As I have said before, Dan does not have to be the smartest man in the room, Mario does.

I re-watched the Unfiltered interview with Dan and it firmed up my authentic and real assessment even more.

  3. Dan made a very interesting comment in the beginning when he addressed the issue about being as young as he is/was when he got the job .   I heard it but then went back and listened again.   It's telling.

Don't want to spoil for others so will wait till a few more people weigh in after watching it.

  4. I think Dan will employ the same strategy next week as he always does.  All nice/nice in the press.  Work in silence, nothing said that will become  bulletin board clippings.  Everything will be very vanilla.

Did you notice after Stanford, he said this week is a 'work week' ?

I expect a lot of the following from Dan and the players:

    "UW is a great team".

"This will be a huge challenge for us".

    "We must prepare for everything".

"Nothing in the past matters, it's about the here and now"

"Play the game, not the occasion"

"We have to play to our standard"

"Pennix is one of the top QBs in the country"

  5. Not only awesome to see them make in game adjustments but even better that they recognized they needed to!  😉 That did not seem to happen a lot in the past.

Also did you catch Dan acknowledging in his post game presser that he did not manage the clock as effectively as he should have at the end of the half?  Acknowledgement of an error (albeit not a game changer) also something that did not happen in the past.

  6. Great article Charles.

Sharing a little personal insight here.   I had a chance to meet Dan and observe him in a social setting and also on the practice field.  He has the 'it' factor.  He worked the room like a pro.   I actually stood back and watched him and he was superb.  Comparing that to his predecessor who I also observed at a social event, he had to be escorted around the room by AD staff.  He lacked social skills quite honestly.  What you saw in his (MC) interactions with the press where exactly the same when he was in a room of donors.  'Nuff' said there.

Dan has a great sense of humor and he spoke very candidly about his wife's battle with cancer and how that shaped him.  He is authentic and real.

I like how he owns things when they don't go right.  That is called humility.  He'll get tested in lots of ways, that's the nature of coaching and life in general but I truly believe he'll handle it and own it.

Lanning has always preached "Main Thing". This presser he masterfully kept the main thing the main thing.

They tried to bait him. Some really dumb questions asked. DL seems locked in and focused. Doesn't seem caught up in outside noise.

    Well done coach.

Totally agree.  Dan is intense for sure and I like his 'main thing' emphasis.

Some of the media peeps try so hard to get him to say stuff that will seem like a 'big scoop' and he just plays it very cool.  He's pretty astute with the media.

I think Lanning put a target on his team's back for a reason. I think he wants to see who elevates their game to the moment and who doesn't. I believe who ever starts the second half of this game will be the ones he sees as the ones who are ready to lead.

His words helped send this from a big conference game to a big national game. I'm sure he new what he was doing. It will now be put up or shut up time for both teams. Can't wait.

    Good point!
