Hey Fish, I'm curious with your Large Brain acumen in analyzing Football. Much has been mentioned with Bo and his lackluster play at Au-tanned during his tenure. Bo has made mention that he was basically hamstrung in that offense by the coaching staff. Now Bo is making a run for the Heisman.

Can you take a look and see how Bo was held back with such lackluster play? Sure, its a load, but I deeply respect your analysis along with other knowledgeable posters here.

Has Bo always been this good and the Coaches didn't know how to use the tools in their tool box or.....?

No Bo used to play in a conference that played defense

Nobody disputes that, and the article was not about that at all.  Just saying.

I was simply replying to the part where it was said it’s now better than Kelley left it.  We went to a title game twice thanks to Kelley.  And he left us a title team.

I do think it’s a bit early to be saying we are back as a title contender because we beat UCLA in Eugene in the rain by 10.

I just don’t see the need to bash other teams?
And we may play Kelley again in the sunshine and not in Eugene.

Love watching the Ducks again.  Hoping the coaches all stay and that Bo returns for another year

I've been thinking a lot this weekend about the post Kelly regression and now progression of the Duck offense.

It seems to me things have come full circle -  like a space ship gaining speed on it's trip to another planet by using the force of gravity while going around the dark side of the moon (Helfrich, Taggart, Cristobal years).

Chip shows the football world how speed and innovation can change the game.

Lineman can be big and fast, not just tall and fat. The football world is skeptical, but the results were undeniable.

Then Saban consults with Kelly. We see more teams buying into Kelly's ideas but with 5 star players.

SEC linemen start to look stronger and faster and they have more stamina.

    Dual threat QBs are vital.

Cristobal worked under Saban. So he had SEC exposure.

Mario comes to Eugene and recruited very well to bring higher rated prospects to Oregon, but without the high octane play calling.

Oregon gets more SEC coaches and an SEC QB transfer that has taken an offense to a new level with an amazing and diverse talent complimented by a defense that is deep and talented, as well.

It seems the Oregon-Kelly-SEC-Oregon circle has the program headed in the right direction and better than Kelly left it after going around the long and dark side of the moon.

Kelley left with a team good enough to go to playoffs.  Just saying.

  4. I won’t make any friends but Lanning is an SEC boy to his roots.

Unless Oregon is prepared to offer him 9 million per year he’s going to head home.

The SEC breathes, drinks, and poops out footballs.  It’s a culture there.

There really isn’t much to do down south but catch crawfish and play football.

To be honest I take the guy coaching our offense.  Lanning hasn’t shown me much as a defensive coach.

Kirby was the defensive genius at Georgia.

We have more talent on D than any team in the conference and are ranked near the bottom.

We lost to UCLA second half.   They hung 30 on us in the rain and cold in Oregon; in their first true road game.

We play them again it will be sunny and not in Oregon.  We still gave up almost 8 yards per carry to their back.

    Just my observations.

I think this is an interesting discussion, but it's a long shot for happening.

Here's the thing with the first game. Oregon was playing last years Georgia (that would pound the ball inside to set up everything else) team and frankly got out coached.

This years Georgia team beat Oregon on the edge not by pounding the ball inside. Oregon had trouble tackling Georgia's big strong receivers on the edge which led to big plays.

I think after a season of watching this years Georgia team and how some others have kept them a little better corralled if not totally stopped, the Ducks have a better game plan next time.

That said, Georgia scores 35 on the Ducks this time. Question is can the Ducks score 35+ on Georgia?

I'm thinking not, but 35-27 Georgia seems realistic.

That would be a typical Alabama vs Georgia score.  So you believe we are on Alabama’s level now?

As long as we are talking theoretically, assume the money is equal -a couple of questions:

    1. would Alabama schedule a home and home with the ducks?

    2. Would Oregon schedule a home and home with Alabama?

when was the last time Georgia travelled 3 time zones to play an away game?

    south east chickens.😀

They play LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, every year,  in conference play.

Then they play the Big 10 Champion, and then Georgia again!

You want that schedule.  That’s what it takes to win a National Championship today.

Why on earth would you also schedule a game against the PAC 12’s best team to start the year?

look at those teams above.  Do you think Oregon plays that schedule and ends up 12-1?

Maybe in a few years but right now?

Something tells me Alabama is not afraid to play us.

Probably not the best measuring stick. Remember that Oregon beat tOSU, and we certainly were not that good last year. This year Oregon needed 5 to 6 games to get used to a new offensive scheme.

There are teams where matchups pose problems for various reasons. Many people thought UCLA would force the Ducks into relying heavily on the passing game.

While I am not betting that this team wins a National Championship, I would bet that all the players and coaches WANT to play any of the “top three” SEC teams.

This is a good team. If Nix and the OL play well, they can be competitive with anybody. Why be scared to play anyone?

You may be right but I beg to differ?   That Ohio State team last year was a very different team at seasons end, then the one we beat early in the season.

Remember they beat Utah, the team that beat us by 50 twice just 3 weeks earlier.

I don’t like it either.  But there’s the SEC and then everyone else.

I think we are going to see a much improved defense by the last game of the year and put it on display in the P12 Championship by shutting down a good Trojan Offense. If we were to play Georgia again we will be much better prepared and give them a battle. We would lose 35 - 31 in a game that earns the respect of fans and potential recruits from around the country.

Fair enough.  So you are saying by years end we will be better than Alabama?   That’s wonderful!

When you watch the tape, the Ducks moved the ball well. The O-line had some fantastic blocks and large holes. I think Georgia still wins, but the D plays better and the O scores.

38-24 Dawgs, but a watchable game.

Maybe.  But UCLA scored 3O at Oregon, in the rain.  Georgia IMO would still get their 49. Our defense is ranked 77 in nation.  Our pass defense is in the bottom 10 percent.  So I am not sold we give Georgia a game after losing the second half in the rain to UCLA.

  10. We still do not have the defense to compete with the SEC.

I would be shocked to score the 17.

    The SEC truly hates Oregon.

I do NOT want to play any of the top 3 SEC teams. We are not ready yet

Remember last year.  Michigan absolutely demolished a veteran Ohio State team.

Then Michigan had to face the SEC in playoffs and got curb stomped.

Georgia absolutely dominated the Ducks in the first game of the season.  Is the Gap between the Nation’s No. 1 team really that vast?  Or……..was it more the case that Lanning’s Ducks just weren’t yet ready and prepared to play a quality game at that time?

    What do you think?

Yes I think SEC defenses are that much better.

Their defensive backs and linebackers are in a complete different league. …

Do I think we would lose 49-3 again?   NO. They could have scored 60 and that is just honesty.

But we simply do not have the defense  to stop them.

I still think they score in high 40’s.  But we could get 20.  About half of what we get on average in pac 12.

Michigan crushed Ohio State last year.
Then got embarrassed when they faced the SEC in the playoffs.

Going to happen again.   I think Michigan beats Ohio State and gets crushed again by Georgia or Bama.

The same team that put up 31 pts on the Bruins in Pasadena and narrowly lost that game by 1 pt, also lost at home yesterday to Troy.  The final score being 10 - 6.  I didn’t watch the game, so I don’t know all the details.

I don’t know if there is anything to take away from South Alabama’s loss or if we should treat it like the Ducks’ Georgia game and give the Bruins a pass for an unimpressive escape.

Interesting Question.  If South Alabama were to play UCLA today would it be a 1 point game?

IF Oregon played Georgia today would there be a different outcome?

  13. I enjoyed the read, thank you.  I too believe pressuring DTR is the key.

I don’t know if it has been discussed much, but I watched the Utah game several times.

Chips team is in shape.  Like the old Oregon teams. I do not want to be in a close game the second half

Take away the garbage 14 points in fourth quarter, and UCLA held Utah to 18 points.

It’s going to be raining, so it may come down to which D can stop the run, and who’s offense can hang onto a wet football.

    I always enjoy your writing.

Is there a year in CFP history where a 1-loss Pac12 champion wouldn’t have made it in? I think any 1-loss Pac12 champ would have made it every year. The problem is that the Pac12 champion most seasons has had multiple losses.

Every single year the other top teams will also fall. To be undefeated is rare!

If Oregon wins out they will be in the CPF (99% sure). But there is a lot of football to be played and for Oregon to win out would be impressive.

I would put a 1 loss SEC team in ahead of a 1 loss PAC 12 team.  Even if SEC has an undefeated team in already.

That’s why I think UCLA is the last chance for a playoff team. Until Saturday they is.

The crowd noise will be the reason for a victory? Surely you jest! While,  it is true that the crowd does play a factor and does in fact cause the offince into mistakes at times, but it is in NO WAY soly responsible for a team's victory.

Let's keep this in it's proper context folks. Let's be glad to be a part of a victory when it happens and enjoy this wonderful time of year.

I was meaning if it’s a close one score victory. Then yes.  Not if we blow them out

  16. UCLA pushed Utah all over the field.  Game was over first half.

I want to jump on the bandwagon as well.  But who, exactly, have we beaten this year?

It was a little over just a month ago I saw Georgia, who was later manhandled by Missouri, curb stomp us.

Then I watched WSU score on us at will.  I haven’t seen them do that to anyone else?

Perhaps I am still dealing with getting crushed by Utah twice, Oklahoma with half their team missing, and Georgia just a month ago.

I am ready to see us a manhandle a legitimate top 15 team for once.  If we can’t beat UCLA at home then what does that really say about us?

A lot of people have that question.  I think Oregon’s image, and future, is riding on this game.

    Go ducks!

From the above article I snip this:

“I believe so much in it, I believe it’s the right thing,” Harlan said of NIL. “But it’s difficult to not have an enforcement mechanism when we’re running into someone who is clearly utilizing it, in some form or fashion, as inducement. And we’re not. That’s frustrating.”

I've been surprised to learn that (apparently) I am in the minority about this NIL-thing and how dangerous it is - how potentially destructive this could be to amatuer sport.  The genie's out of the bottle now and there will be no going back, I know.  But I refuse to believe this is a good thing for out colleges or High Schools because as certain as the sun rises in the East this is going to infect our HS sports programs as well.

It is no longer amateur sports!  College is professional sports now.  That is the definition of payed players.

  18. On 10/19/2022 at 5:23 PM, DazeNconfused said:

No not everyone gets NIL. If you're a lowly 3-star who plays in the 3rd and long passing down Dime defense package you're not to marketable or much of an impact player.

The QBs have value in being marketable and as an impact player. Booster's collective will pay them the most. But if you're a 5-star DL you can get paid for being an impact player - they just say the money is for your Name-Image-Likeness.

The loophole here the booster's collectives can pay the best players to play for their team to load up on talent. They get away with it by saying the money isn't paying them to play - it's for the NIL. They can hold an event at a car lot the players attended and sign autographs for 5 people and pay them $50K or whatever for that.

There is no declared matrix of market values that defines what player is worth and if they are being overpaid for their Name-Image-Likeness. So, it comes down to how much money do we have to spend on the roster? The ones with the most to spend get the best teams

Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me.  I am wishing now I wouldn’t have asked.  Lol
