Oregon Secures Commitment from Former Austin Peay P Matt Rigney

Recommended Posts

Oregon lands its third transfer of the week as former Austin Peay P Matt Rigney commits to the Ducks.

Rigney, a fifth-year redshirt junior, earned All-ASUN Conference honors last season. Rigney averaged 40.9 yards on 44 punts last season, with eight landing inside the 20, four for 50-plus yards with a long of 57. Of Rigney's 44 attempts, just two landed as touchbacks.

In 2021, Rigney turned in another solid year, averaging 40.7 yards on 55 punts with 14 inside the 20, seven for 50-plus yards with a long of 60. Once again, Rigney's touchback numbers remained low, having just three.

With Rigney's addition to the kicking room, Oregon now has three punters competing for the opening-day nod. Rigney joins a battle between Luke Dunne and Ross James. Both Rigney and Dunne are Australian natives, while James transferred in last year from East Central Community College.

Something that punters have in common with quarterbacks?  Lots have the arm/leg strength, but the difference is accuracy.   His punting average is not as important as to NOT punt out of the end zone as I saw WAY too many times the last number of years.  I would shout at the TV...."don't blast it out of the end-zone bonehead!"

Then he would.  A net of 20-25 yards on the punt is all.

Just three touchbacks in a season?  This could be a real weapon for our defense, as it puts pressure on an opposing offense when they start at their ten yard line.  It is harder to travel the entire field to score, thus an accurate punter can lower the points allowed this year by our defense.

Josh Bidwell was good with accurate, high-hangers...

The ultimate comeback began Josh Bidwell's career

With the Ducks ability to move the ball it would be nice to have a punter that can pin the opponents deep in their own territory. This would help a defense that really couldn’t stop much last season. Giving our offense more opportunities to move the ball is extremely important this season. A quality punter can’t hurt.

+1 for Josh Bidwell! Great punter and a great guy. MVP of a few close games at Autzen IMHO.
