2024 Football Recruits...Announcements, Updates (No.5)

Recommended Posts

Our 4th thread for this topic has reached a most of a 2nd page and has gotten too cumbersome to handle.  So, I am starting a new thread (No. 5).

NJDuck and I have never gone through a whole year cycle of postings regarding recruiting before, so this has been a learning experience. Along with the fact that Coach Lanning and his crew are such good recruiters, this thread grows quickly.

An Oregon target...

4-star WR Gatlin Bair commits to Boise State: 'Growing the brand of the state is a big thing for me'

Burley (Idaho) four-star wide receiver Gatlin Bair has nearly every major college program in the country recruiting him even though he won’t be able to play until 2026. Bair is set to take a two-year mission trip starting early next year and will return ready to start school January 2026.

When he comes back, Bair won’t be traveling far to play college football. On Friday night Bair announced his commitment to Boise State choosing the Broncos over Michigan in a battle that came down to the final days.

No. 3 recruit, DL Williams Nwaneri names Oregon in top five and sets commitment date

Last Thursday, Nwaneri named his top five schools — which includes the Oregon Ducks — as well as his commitment date — which is August 14th.

The Ducks have already had a successful recruiting season, but the addition of a diamond-like Nwaneri on the D-line would do wonders for the future of Ducks football.

With the Ducks now joining the Big 10 and leaving the pass-happy Pac-12, stopping the run will become more of a defensive focus, so a bolstered D-line becomes paramount.

Even though he named Oregon as a top 5 school, it is unlikely Nwaneri will end up in Eugene. As a Missourian he may be inclined to stay closer to home at schools like Oklahoma or Missouri itself — both of which are schools included in Nwaneri’s top five.

Furthermore, 247 Sports experts have aggregated a crystal ball prediction of 100 percent confidence that Nwaneri will commit to Oklahoma when the time comes less than two weeks from now.

Meet the 2024 Class: Four-star DB Dakoda Fields flips from USC to Oregon

"Here's what I'll say, there's a lot of things on my schedule," said head coach Lanning after Oregon's spring game. "What this is really tough on the next few weeks is our assistant coaches.

They'll be on the road, away from their wives, kids, because they're going to be on the road recruiting. And when they get back, they'll be hosting recruits. We're really grinding until we get to July. Once we get to July, we'll take a deep breath."

What's Next at Cornerback For Oregon After Landing Dakoda Fields

Demetrice Martin sent another statement on the recruiting trail and may not be finished.

Oregon is ascending back up the recruiting rankings after landing a commitment from 2024 Gardena (Calif.) Serra cornerback Dakoda Fields on Monday. He flipped his pledge away from the USC Trojans and the Ducks seem to have recaptured some important momentum on the trail.

With Fields in the fold, Oregon has now has two cornerback commits--with the other being 2024 Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy corner Ify Obidegwu.

Both players are long defensive backs, measuring in at 6'2" and 6'1" respectively, making them ideal fits in Dan Lanning and Tosh Lupoi's defense.

But are the Ducks finished at corner?

They could be, but I don't think they necessarily are.

5-star CB Kobe Black puts Oregon among top schools

Dan Lanning Demetrice Martin, and the Oregon Ducks have been on a roll when recruiting cornerbacks since they landed in Eugene. Already in the 2024 recruiting cycle, the Ducks have landed commitments from 4-star CB Ify Obidegwu (No. 122 overall player, No. 11 CB) and flipped 4-star CB Dakoda Fields (No. 83 overall, No. 9 CB) from the USC Trojans back to Oregon.

Now the Ducks are finding themselves in the running for one of the top defensive backs left on the board — 5-star CB Kobe Black.

Flock Talk: Everybody Hurts

EARLY CAMP THOUGHTS:

It is always difficult to truly know much about where a team stands even after eight or nine practices without actually watching the practices. Most coaches in today’s world of college football are pretty good at sounding alarms to keep teams energized, then turning to praise to ensure that criticism is not too overboard. “Coachspeak” is a language all its own and can be difficult to parse into truth.

What I do know is that there is some truth to the praise being heaped onto some players early. The linebacker corps is going to be significantly better this year than a year ago. I think it says a lot when someone like Devon Jackson (who reportedly added 21 pounds from his listed 214 last season) talks about how difficult it was to understand the defense a year ago and the progression he has made in that regard.

Duck target WR Jeremiah McClellan to Ohio State

The Oregon Ducks fought hard to get 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan to join the already impressive 2024 class in Eugene, but they were ultimately unable to land him in the end.

McClellan, the No. 91 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 17 WR, announced on Sunday afternoon that he would be committing to the Ohio State Buckeyes over the Ducks and Missouri Tigers.

Earlier this summer, McClellan took an official visit to Eugene and was reportedly very high on the Ducks. Over the past week, a long list of Oregon commits went on a social media blitz, trying hard to publicly recruit McLellan to become a Duck.

Oregon’s 2024 class is still looking very solid at the WR position, led by 4-star Jordan Anderson (No. 144 overall, No. 22 WR) leading the way. Adding McClellan would have been a great bonus, though.

Oregon's Top 5 Flip Candidates in the 2024 Recruiting Class

The Ducks may not be out of it for some of the nation's best with four months to go before the early signing period.

Oregon's 2024 recruiting class is in a great spot as the start of the 2023 college football season is now less than a month away.

Dan Lanning and company hold 22 verbal commitments, which ranks No. 12 nationally according to 247Sports.

With as many commitments as the Ducks have, spots are going to become more valuable, which means the coaches will likely be more selective with who they take. That said, Oregon will continue to recruit a number of players despite a verbal commitment.

Predicting a flip to Oregon for these players isn't something I'm ready to do, but here's a batch that I think is worth keeping an eye on with high school football kicking off across the country this month.

Oregon Ducks Can Still Sign Prized Mater Dei Trio

Oregon is in a sweet spot when it comes to their 2024 recruiting class.

With 22 verbal commitments, they have at least one commit at every position and have done a lot of their heavy lifting.

Now, as Dan Lanning and company eye the start of the season, they can hone their focus in on priority targets that will likely commit and potentially sign between now and December.

Three of those recruits all attend the same school: Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in the country by MaxPreps and will open their season on Friday against the No. 15-ranked Corona Centennial Huskies.

Top offensive commit: QB Michael Van Buren (No. 23)
Top defensive commit: CB Dakoda Fields (No. 75)

On the heels of securing the Pac-12's top class in 2023, the Ducks are proving they will be tough to dethrone. They added one of the nation's top QBs in Michael Van Buren, a poised, confident, accurate and mobile passer. They continue to add talent to the receiver position with a pair of ESPN 300 prospects in Jordan Anderson and Dillon Gresham. Anderson can adjust to the ball well and be elusive, while Gresham is a versatile player with a nice blend of speed and quickness. The Ducks are also adding top talent to their secondary with Aaron Flowers, a cornerback with elite quickness and good instincts, and Ify Obidegwu, a big corner with elite length. They further bolstered that group by flipping Dakoda Fields from rival USC. Up front, Jaxson Jones is an edge player with good initial burst and body control; he brings a nice ceiling for development.

The Latest With 5-Star DL Aydin Breland

Aydin Breland is the top-ranked defensive lineman on the West Coast and a decision may not be far off.

The No. 1 Mater Dei Monarchs took home their first win of the Frank McManus era Friday Night in the Inland Empire, putting away the Corona Centennial Huskies 28-14.

Their defense played a big role in securing the win, as their defensive front, led by Aydin Breland, was getting after Husan Longstreet all night.

Ducks Digest caught up with the 6-foot-5, 290-pound lineman for the latest in his recruitment, as there's been buzz he could be narrowing his list of suitors.

"Just time to make a decision," Breland said. "Me and my family have come down to make it a top four. It's gonna drop pretty soon."

Breland has been a highly-coveted recruit for much of his high school career, but it doesn't appear that there's a clear finish line in sight just yet.

Five-star OL Brandon Baker closing in on commitment

We had a chance to see Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive lineman Brandon Baker in action over the weekend in the Monarchs season opener.

In a matchup featuring teams ranked Nos. 1 and 3 in the state, the top-ranked Monarchs took down Centennial 28-14 in a game that was closer than expected.

It was good to see Baker in action, as we didn’t get to see a lot of him over the offseason. Physically, he looks great. He said that he recently measured in at Mater Dei at 6-foot-5, 295 with an 83-inch wingspan.

He’s rated the No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 24 player overall in the Top247 as well.

As good as Baker was last season — and he was very good, starting every game at right tackle for the Monarchs — he said that he’s a different player this year.

Elite JUCO CB Names Top Three

Oregon remains in the mix for a number of 2024 recruiting targets. Even with the recent flip of cornerback Dakoda Fields, Oregon remains in the mix for another talented corner.

College of San Mateo (Calif.) corner Sione Laulea has been a top target for the Ducks. He dropped a top five about three weeks ago but is now down to three programs. The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder named Oregon, USC and Miami as his finalists.

Currently Oregon has the lead in the On3 RPM at nearly 84%.

Laulea is the top-ranked JUCO player in the country. His combination of size and speed has made him one of the most coveted players in the country.

In June Laulea took official visits to Oregon, USC, Penn State, Miami and Utah. He later visited Penn State at the end of the July period. Most expected this one to come down to Oregon and Penn State for his commitment.

However his new top three does not include the Nittany Lions.

Here is what Laulea told ScoopDuck about Oregon following his official visit...

Prospect Pulse: RB Jason Brown Jr. Nearing the Finish Line

Jason Brown Jr. has the Ducks in his final three schools and has emerged as a priority target for Carlos Locklyn.

Heading into the start of the 2023 college football season, Oregon's 2024 recruiting class is getting full. That means the staff will need to be selective with who they take commitments from moving forward.

One player we know is high on Oregon's board is Seattle (Wash.) O'Dea running back Jason Brown Jr. He's next up on our new series "Prospect Pulse," where I weigh in on the schools in contention for a certain recruit and what I think of Oregon's chances.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pound ballcarrier has cut his offer sheet featuring more than 20 schools down to just three.

The Oregon Ducks, Michigan State Spartans and Washington Huskies will battle it out for the nation's No. 11 running back and the No. 2 recruit out of Washington (according to 247Sports).

PREDICTION: Forecasting a 2024 Running Back to the Oregon Ducks

Oregon football has been operating quietly behind the scenes on the recruiting trail.

After a strong summer, all eyes are on 2024 Yelm (Wash.) linebacker Brayden Platt, who's set to announce his college commitment on September 4. I logged my prediction for Oregon earlier this summer and he continues to look like he's trending to the Ducks.

But now it's time for another prediction on a top Oregon target.

Today I'm predicting 2024 Seattle (Wash.) O'Dea running back Jason Brown Jr. to commit to Oregon.

Confidence meter: 6.5/10

Oregon makes the Top 5 for 4-star IOL out of Florida

The Oregon Ducks got some good news on the recruiting front Sunday afternoon as one of the top offensive line prospects in the state of Florida announced he's down to a select few and the Ducks made the cut.

4-star offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis of Tampa Tech Catholic in Tampa, Florida announced he is only going to consider Miami, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCF, and the Oregon Ducks. He announced his final five on social media Sunday morning.

Oregon hosted Pierre-Louis for an unofficial visit during spring football and then had hoped to get him out to campus for Saturday Night Live in July, but that visit didn't happen. The Ducks are expected to host him for an official visit this fall or winter.

The Ducks offered the 6-foot-3, 335-pound lineman a scholarship back on January 20, 2022. He's ranked as the No. 246 player overall in the 247Sports Composite and ranked as the 15th-best interior offensive lineman.

Within the state of Florida, Pierre-Louis is ranked as the 36th-best player overall.

Currently, the 247Sports Crystal Ball has one prediction, and it's for UCF, a school near Pierre-Louis. He holds over 40 scholarship offers at this time.

2024 Oregon Target Picks up New Recruiting Prediction

Jason Brown Jr. is one of Oregon's top running back targets in 2024 and could be trending away from the Ducks. But that may not be a bad thing.

The Ducks love what they have in Riggs this cycle and I don't think there's much question that they want another back.

However, with numbers getting tight at 23 verbal commitments, Carlos Locklyn and the coaching staff will likely need to decide if they want that running back to come from the high school ranks or the transfer portal.

Coveted Edge Rusher Solomon Williams Locks in Oregon Official Visit

Oregon's 2024 recruiting class is getting tight on space following the commitment of Brayden Platt earlier this week.

That said, one of the players that remains high on the recruiting big board for Dan Lanning and company is Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day EDGE Solomon Williams.

The four-star standout has more than 40 reported scholarship offers and will take an official visit to Oregon this fall, according to a reporter from John Garcia Jr. of Rivals.

Garcia reports that Williams will make a highly-anticipated return trip to Oregon for his official visit on September 23 when the Ducks are scheduled to play in their Pac-12 opener against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.

Williams is listed at 6'3", 250 pounds and is rated a four-star (0.9058) recruit by the 247Sports Composite. The same system ranks him the No. 294 player nationally, the No. 21 edge rusher and the No. 42 recruit in the talent-rich state of Florida.

The standout trench talent is working from a top seven of Oregon, Alabama, UCF, Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Clemson and has yet to announce a decision date.

Four-star ATH Isaiah Rubin sets commitment date between Oregon, USC, UNLV, Utah

Los Alamitos (Calif.) defensive back Isaiah Rubin has locked in his commitment date with four schools standing out right now. Rubin said that he would make his college choice known on October 20.

“That’s my birthday,” Rubin said. “I thought it was a good time to announce and celebrate it. I still have some trips to take but don’t have any dates locked in right now.

“The main schools I’m looking at are Oregon, USC, Utah and UNLV. I’ve visited all of them except for Utah so far but I’m planning to get out there before I make my decision.

I like Utah a lot and I like how they play defense so I'm looking forward to visiting and learning more about them.”

Rubin’s most recent visit was to Oregon for the Ducks Saturday Night Live event in late July. He also visited last January.

When discussing 2024 Oregon Ducks quarterback commit Michael Van Buren, there's one thing we can say with absolute 100% confidence.

By the time he gets to Eugene in January to enroll with the Ducks, he's going to be battle-tested.

Van Buren and the St. Frances Academy Panthers may still be searching for their first win this season entering week 5, but it's certainly not for a lack of talent. Their schedule has taken them all across the country and pinned them against many of the nation's premier programs.

Five-Star DL Aydin Breland cuts his list to three

Breland named Georgia, Miami and Oregon as his finalists. He said he still doesn’t have a time frame in mind for when he plans to make his decision but could have a better idea following his upcoming visit to Georgia this weekend.

Breland officially visited all three schools back in June and has also unofficially visited each program over the last year. He’ll be in Athens this weekend when the Dawgs take on South Carolina.

He has an athletic 6-foot-5, 295-pound frame and physically, looks like a college player right now. He can really run for a player his size, is a physical kid with a nice edge in his game and his upside is off the charts...
