Week 1 Portland State @ Ducks: Game Day News, Interviews, Etc. (Sep 2, 12:00 PM PT, Pac-12 Networks)

Recommended Posts

On game weeks, we will have a Pregame thread. Usually, these will start on Sunday/Monday as that is when the Pregame articles will start coming out.

Because advertising only appears on the first page and we want to earn as much money as possible for OBDF, this will be a continual thread. This means that older articles will be deleted as the page fills up.

After the game, I will start a Postgame thread.

Be sure to check in often to keep up with the news as we have some big games coming up.

PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS at #15 OREGON DUCKS

The 2023 campaign opens for Portland State Football this Saturday as the Vikings take on FBS #15 Oregon at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Kickoff is scheduled for noon as the game is televised on the Pac-12 Network.

The Vikings begin their season in familiar fashion, taking on a pair of Bowl Subdivision programs before getting to the meat of their schedule and the Big Sky Conference season. PSU comes off a 4-7 season in 2022. The Vikings were 3-5 and seventh place in the 12-team Big Sky.

Head Coach Bruce Barnum begins his ninth season at the helm of the Viking ship. He has 38 returning letterwinners, including 14 starters (6o/5d/3st). The Vikings have 31 returning redshirts, 20 with game experience who maintained redshirt status.

The Vikings should have a dynamic offense, led by returning JR QB Dante Chachere who, as a pass-run threat in the pocket, had 2,565 total yards and 26 total touchdowns in his first season as a starter in 2022.

He is backed up by great depth in the backfield, on the outside and the offensive line. Barnum will continue to call the plays for the Vikings offense while elevating Assistant Coach AC Patterson to the role of offensive coordinator in 2023.

The Vikings defense will be led by a pair of veteran coaches as Colin Fry and Mark Rhea will share coordinating duties. Fry, in his seventh season, will be co-defensive coordinator for the defensive backfield, while Rhea, in his third season, will be co-defensive coordinator for the defensive line.

Rhea is charged with rebuilding a re-stocked line as the Vikings lost four senior starters from 2022. Fry has quality experience at defensive back while the linebacking crew, also loaded with experienced players, will have heated competition for playing time.

How will transfers Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson, Gary Bryant Jr. enhance Oregon Ducks receiving corps?

The long overdue overhaul of Oregon’s receiver room began this offseason.

The Ducks saw five receivers transfer, though only Dont’e Thornton had more than 100 receiving yards among that group, and replaced them with five other wide outs, including transfers Traeshon Holden, Tez Johnson and Gary Bryant.

Oregon hopes the result is a significant upgrade in talent, experience and production that will help take what was a top 25 offense last season into an even more productive and explosive group this fall.

Know the Foe: Five Portland State players to know

This will be a weekly feature published each week and one of three weekly "Know the Foe" stories" per game week. We'll also educate fans on the opposition using recruiting rankings weekly, while a Q&A with the opposing school's beat writer will complete the "Know the Foe' series.

Because, as the headline suggests, it's important to Know The Foe.

This week will be different though. Because Portland State is an FCS foe, we won't be looking at their recruiting rankings and the beat writer Q&A will be held one week later as well.

Here are five Viking players that will be worth knowing when the teams square off on Saturday afternoon at 12 PM from Autzen Stadium in Eugene. This week's game will be aired on the Pac-12 Network.

Injury Report: Updated news for Oregon Ducks ahead of game vs Portland State

As expected, the injury report is short this week as the Oregon Ducks football team prepares for its season opener on Saturday against Portland State.

The injury report was quite extensive last season, even before the season began, so it’s refreshing news to know the Ducks are fairly healthy as the 2023 year approaches.

Obviously, that’s bound to change as the season goes along, but hopefully Oregon can stay as healthy as humanly possible in 2023 in order to see their true potential.

It’s also important that the injury bug stay away in a game with the Vikings, a team the Ducks are expected to handle with ease.

Bassa, Lanning provide comments on matchup against Portland State

Portland State played one game against a Power 5 opponent last season against Washington. The Huskies had no problem hosting the Vikings, winning 52-6, throwing for 317 yards and rushing for 240.

However, despite the clear talent gap between the Ducks and Vikings, Lanning was explicit in his concerns for his team against the Portland-based school and their fifth-year quarterback, Dante Chachere.

For third-year linebacker Jeffrey Bassa, maintaining a sound defense against Chachere is necessary for the Ducks to have an effective defense.

Josh Conerly Jr. readying himself for collegiate starting debut this Saturday

Sophomore Josh Conerly Jr. is expected to make his first start in green and yellow this Saturday when the Ducks open the 2023 season with Portland State.

Since signing with the Ducks as the nation's top offensive line recruit a season ago, Conerly has been preparing himself to take on a bigger role. He played just over 100 snaps a season ago as a true freshmen, acting as the only member of his class to appear in all 13 games for the Ducks.

"I'm super amped. Last year I was really nervous going into our first game. Being a lot more prepared and knowing what you're doing makes it a lot more exciting," he said following Tuesday's practice.

"Really try to slow things down as much as you can. I feel like when I came in everything was just moving so fast, and I didn't really know how to handle everything."

While an official depth chart will not be released before Saturday's game, Conerly has been working as the team's top left tackle since spring, and is expected to operate as Bo Nix's primary blindside protector this season.

Where has the former five-star recruit grown most since stepping into a bigger role?

Portland State vs Oregon Football History

Given that this will be Oregon’s last football season competing against traditional Pac-12 rivals, I have decided it would be a good opportunity to look back at the Ducks history against their current conference members.

All three of Oregon’s non-conference opponents this season have a history with the Ducks, however brief, so I will be reviewing that as well. We begin this series with a look at the great heathen army near Hawthorne Boulevard, the Portland State Vikings.

Marcus Harper settling in at familiar spot: 'It's great being back at left guard'

Oregon junior Marcus Harper spoke at length on Wednesday about how he's settled in at his favorite spot after moving around during spring and fall camp.

Things haven't come easy for Marcus Harper since he enrolled at Oregon in 2020.

After playing sparingly his first two seasons, the Chicago native made 10 starts last season in place of Steven Jones. Once Jones returned from injury, Harper was relegated to a reserve role for the final two games.

Even with the departure of four starters from a season ago, a starting role was anything but guaranteed. An injury suffered in spring took away valuable reps, and the Ducks added guard transfers Nishad Strother and Junior Angilau, both three-years starters at their previous schools, this offseason to strengthen the room.

"I've proven to myself that even though there's more competition that I can go out there and do what I need to do," Harper said of this fall camp. "I remember coach [A'lique] Terry after the first scrimmage said 'Everyone is doing a great job, but who is going to be most consistent?'...

No. 15 Oregon announces uniforms for week one against Portland State

On Wednesday afternoon, the Oregon Ducks announced what uniforms they'll be wearing for their upcoming matchup against Portland State on September 2nd.

The Ducks will go with their traditional black and yellow design, with yellow jerseys, pants, and cleats featuring black accents. Oregon's helmets will be black with carbon fiber wings, featuring a yellow "O" on the back of the helmet.

Oregon has updated its uniforms very slightly for the 2023 season. The school has continued the tradition of wings on the helmet.

They've kept a similar design of a flying Duck inside the football complex that honors all the Ducks to be drafted into the NFL and kept the move of the Oregon "O" to the center of the uniform's collar.

The uniforms have also placed the Nike iconic "swoosh" on the left breast and the Fighting Duck on the back collar.

12 burning questions for the Ducks to answer in Week 1 vs. Portland State

It’s been a long offseason for the Oregon Ducks that has been full of changes.

While the first year under Dan Lanning was successful, there is a hope and desire from the fanbase that 2023 will bring even higher heights to the program now that the coaching staff is more established in Eugene, and more of Lanning’s players are on the roster.

We saw over half of the roster from last year replaced by incoming recruits or transfers, so there are a lot of new faces to watch on Saturday against Portland State in the season-opener.

While we got a look at most of them in the spring game back in April, none of that will compare to the action that we see on Saturday afternoon.

If you’re like me, then I’m sure you have a ton of questions about this team going forward, from offense to defense, to special teams.

Here are some of the most important things that I think we need to find the answers to.

Oregon vs. Portland State: 'Tale of the Tape' for No. 15 Ducks vs. Vikings

Members of the Oregon Ducks are looking forward to hitting someone not wearing green and yellow this weekend, and fans of the Oregon Ducks are looking forward to watching some football.

Media members who cover the Oregon Ducks are just happy that we will have something other than finite periods of practice to analyze for a change.

That starts right now by looking ahead to Saturday’s game against the Portland State Vikings.

While it’s a lopsided affair that the Ducks are projected to win by a large margin, we still can take a deeper dive into the matchup and see where the biggest strengths and weaknesses are that either team might be able to exploit.

I am happy to bring our ‘Tale of the Tape’ series out of storage and knock the dust off. So when you look at the tape and get into the numbers, which team is expected to have an advantage?

Let’s take a look, using numbers from last season to project ahead.

Offensive Line Spotlight

The 2023 Ducks offensive line is shaping up to be drastically different from the 2022 iteration. Four of the five starters, along with offensive line coach Adrian Klemm, departed in the offseason. That is not to say that there isn’t a great group of talent competing for spots on this line.

New offensive line coach A’lique Terry is set to begin his first year in charge of this unit, and will try and recreate last year’s magic with a very different group.

Terry has previously coached in Eugene during the 2019 and 2020 seasons as a graduate assistant and was aiming to join Dan Lanning’s staff last season, but decided to take the opportunity to coach with the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. He has previously been the head offensive line coach at the University of Hawaii in 2021, so he is bringing a lot of experience to this group.

To assist on the staff, Oregon brought in a 30-year veteran in Mike Cavanaugh, who has spent the last two seasons at Arizona State coaching their line.

After losing star center Alex Forsyth, junior Jackson Powers-Johnson is expected to step into that role, which are some very big shoes to fill. Having played center, guard, and tackle last season, he is a very experienced and versatile lineman.

The Ducks have four offensive guards that have all started more than 10 games in their careers, so JPJ will have to adapt and move to center in order to get into this starting unit.

CB Trikweze Bridges sees chemistry and depth as defensive upgrades heading into week one

Plenty of question marks surround the 2023 Oregon Ducks as they embark into another college football season, this year beginning with Portland State at home. Specifically, many of those questions revolve around the defense and the unit's disappointing season a year ago.

Rather unfond reactions are exhibited when reminding returning defensive players of the shortcomings against Washington and Oregon State a year ago.

With that in mind, a simple yet important question was asked to junior cornerback Trikweze Bridges on Wednesday: How has the defense improved?

Bridges, who started every game at cornerback a season ago, smiled before politely answering the media, saying, "I believe that question will be answered for you on Saturday."

Portland State coach says Oregon has fastest team in Pac-12

Portland State coach Bruce Barnum couldn’t miss Oregon’s spring game earlier this year.

“They are more popular than us, so their spring game was all over the TV,” he said this week ahead of their clash with the Ducks. “So we watched that even though they didn’t really show much.”

And, of course, the Vikings have watched plenty of film of Oregon in the months since to try and prepare. They’ll meet on Saturday at Autzen Stadium for a noon PT kick.

What does Barnum expect? Lots and lots of speed...

Oregon injury report for Week 1 vs. Portland State

The Oregon Ducks will open their season this afternoon against the Portland State Vikings at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. PT.

While there is plenty of excitement surrounding Dan Lanning’s squad ahead of the 2023 campaign, the Ducks could be missing some firepower in Week 1.

Oregon does not publicly release injury reports, and Lanning has typically opted not to discuss injuries this spring. But here is the latest Ducks injury report ahead of Saturday’s matchup with Portland State based on recent observations from practice.
