'The Big Ten's Going to Have to Prepare for Us;' Dan Lanning Details Oregon's Conference Adjustment

Recommended Posts

A new era is coming for the Oregon Ducks — and the whole world of college football, really — in 2024, thanks to conference realignment and the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.

With the death of the Pac-12 and the move to the Big Ten, Dan Lanning is now shepherding the Ducks into the new dawn, and based on the roster construction we’ve seen so far this offseason, he’s got the team well prepared.

“I think the challenge in front of us is a lot of fun,” Lanning said. “I don’t think anyone gets into this profession and says ‘Give me the easy road.’ So being in a conference that has that competitive nature; that has really good football; that plays a physical brand of football, that’s something that I’m excited about.”

We are the luckiest fans in college football.

Every time I hear DL speak it sends chills up my back. No BS No lies.

Even if we don’t win it all these next few years are going to be memories we will never forget.

Its not just DL that is lucky to be in Eugene but it’s us as well.

Go Dan.

Mostly that is just talk for us fans.  The reality is that Ohio State has had explosive passing offenses in recent years, (averaging over 40 points a game routinely) in addition to having physical trenches and a tough defense.  Oregon will not be a surprise to them, but will be another top competitor in their conference.

When you add new teams to a conference, you want cannon fodder in big markets.  Rutgers, Maryland and UCLA fit that criteria nicely.

Oregon does not...

We're going to force this on the Buckeyes more often than they want...

Without a doubt the current BIG members will have to adjust and recruit better to compete with the offenses that the 4 incoming schools present........

As Charles pointed out they have seen offensive firepower from tOSU Buckeyes for years. And all but Michigan (last 3 years) have failed in their attempts to beat the Buckeyes.

In 2024, the Ducks on paper, bring a fierce competitor on par with tOSU. Every team, except tOSU and UM, will need their A plus effort and the perfect storm to take OBD's down to defeat.

Cant speak has to how usc, ucla and huskies will do until the rosters are completed after spring ball.

In looking at the 2024 schedule the Nittany Lions have a schedule that positions them for a 2nd or 3rd place finish. They get tOSU (loss) and huskies at home. Road game to usc and dont face Michigan or the Ducks. That is a scheduling break for sure.

They are replacing 6 key NFL bound defensive players with top level TP players. 11-1 or 10-2 positions them nicely for a CFP invite.

The Ducks will be positioned to win 10 games with sheer talent, coaching continuity and an explosive offense. They will stretch the opposing defenses and attach every inch of the field.

Michigan on the road and tOSU at home will be toss up games and could be a win or a loss. We could be 9-2 when we face the huskies.

No more losing to those dogs because 9-3 will not garner a CFP invite. Especially the last gane of the regular season.

DL and staff will have the team ready to compete at the highest level. However, OBD's will face 2 or 3 top 10 teams in 2024.

We only faced 1 legitimate top 10 team in 2023 and lost both times. That trend must stop in 2024 and I believe it will. ....

OBDF, we are playing in the BIG leagues now

Go Ducks.....

Penn State does have a favorable schedule. PSU's only challenge OOC is the opener at West Virginia. Interesting scheduling quirk with UCLA coming to Happy Valley on 10/5 and Penn State playing USC in LA on 10/12, the same Saturday that Oregon hosts Ohio State. (Also being played on this date, Texas vs. Oklahoma, Ole Miss at LSU, and UW at Iowa.)

PSU is bringing in the OC from Kansas. PSU does well against teams it can grind down but its O in recent seasons has stalled against better opponents. Can Coach Franklin break free of the 10-2 regular season record?

Maryland, I would not sell short. In 2023 the Terps lost a one-score game to Michigan. Without starting QB Taulia Tags, Under-Turtle Maryland easily dispatched Auburn in its bowl game. Maryland should start the season 5-0: UConn; Michigan State; at UVA; Villanova; and at Indiana. USC trips to Maryland the Saturday after playing Penn State in LA. It's a long way to travel after what should be a tough game for the Trojans.

Maryland comes up on a tricky spot on Oregon's schedule. Maryland will be the 7th B1G game in a row without a break and is sandwiched between trips to Ann Arbor and Madison. Maryland is Off the week before traveling to Eugene. Off on 11/2 when Oregon plays in the Big House. What physical and emotional condition will Oregon be in when the Terps trip west?

QB Taulia Tagovailoa, the B1G's all-time leader in passing yards, is gone. NC St transfer M. J. Morris is expected to start at QB in 2024. Morris was given a 4* portal ranking by 247. Morris is a RS Soph who in 9 games at NC St (7 starts) passed for 1367 yards, 14 TDs, and 6 Ints. Terps coach, Mike Locksley, OC for Saban at Bama before taking the Maryland job, always puts a decent offense on the field and will have an extra week to game plan for the Ducks.

It's not just the opponent in CFB, it's also about where and when you play the opponent.

Terrific comment. 9 games in 2024 are against teams that went bowling in 2023 including NY6 bowl participant Ohio State and the two teams that played for the 2023/24 championship.

SP+ ranks Oregon's SOS heading into 2024 at No. 13 in the nation. Oregon finishes at defending champ Michigan, Maryland, at Wisconsin, and UW after an off week. No Easy Day including 10/12 vs Ryan Day.

My guess, for what it is worth, is that DL will field a team that is 2 deep, with top level talent.

This depth and talent will serve them well during that 9 game stretch. In 2023, with all the rotations, the Ducks never looked or played tired.

The S and C for the players in 2023 stood out to me. We may have not come from behind at TT (in that heat) to snatch that win without it. TT ran out of gas, not the Ducks

2024 will be a grind and the year that Oregon establishes its brand as top 5......

Penn State has a cake walk of a season compared to the Ducks in 2024. OBD's have no margin for error with tOSU and Michigan on the schedule. They must win the other 10 games no matter the circumstances.

Us fans are going to need to get prepared for what could be an emotional, nail biting season.

Go DL....Go Ducks.

Like poker!!

It’s not just the hand you’re dealt, it’s also your betting position.

ln fact, betting position is more determinative than cards in hand.
