Jon Joseph Moderator No. 1 Share Posted September 20 The Big Ten Conference including the Victory Bell game between UCLA and USC recognizes 17 football trophy games. There is a reason why the B1G 'Saturday coverage site' is referred to as 'Saturday Tradition.' Oregon is leaving a conference with great tradition of its own but is not leaving tradition behind. In addition to No. 11 ranked USC playing No. 18 Michigan, and No. 24 Illinois playing No. 22 Nebraska in Week 4, the Battle for The Floyd of Rosedale Trophy will be played in Minneapolis when 2-1 Iowa faces 2-1 Minnesota. The history of the 'Pig Trophy Game' is explained in the attached article. Note, that the game was born out of political and racial animus that was overcome by a wager between the Governors of Iowa and Minnesota; the Governor of the team that lost the game had to personally deliver a prized home state porker to the winning Governor. For health, safety, welfare, and olfactory reasons, today the winning team takes possession of a statue of Floyd. The pig and the politician STORIES.UIOWA.EDU Only one team can leave the Iowa-Minnesota football game with a bronze pig. Here’s the story behind the beloved trophy. Iowa is the only B1G team to have three permanent opponents, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. All three are Trophy games. Will the Cascade Clash between OBD and UW one day be recognized as a Trophy tilt? If so, what will the trophy be?

With a name like Cascade Clash, which is unofficial but should be the thing, I'd say it should be mountain themed.
HDuck No. 3 Share Posted September 20 Iowa also has a trophy game with Iowa State. But, most Iowa fans of a certain maturity consider the game with Minnesota as THE rivalry game. For many years it was the last game of the regular season, sometimes played in snowy conditions. When Nebraska joined the Big Ten, the conference "manufactured" a rivalry game with Iowa for Thanksgiving weekend to end the season to create a "rivalry" for Nebraska in the B1G. That shifted the Minnesota game to various dates ranging from mid-October to mid-November. This Saturday is only the third time Iowa and Minnesota have played a game in September in their history. This will be the 118th meeting. Before Simmons who was discussed in that link, Iowa's roster included Duke Slater...the first Black in the College Football Hall of Fame. The stadium field has a logo with his name as the Duke Slater Field. Iowa had Black players as early as 1910. The first Black player on the Alabama roster was 1971. 1 1

Solar No. 5 Share Posted September 20 The trophy should just be a a beautiful fir tree carved out of a beautiful piece of wood mounted in a bronze base. Maybe the wood should a be a waterproof variant like teak for longevity. What to call it, I don't know. Something stupid but perhaps more original would be a carved woodshed model with an axe in front. Implying who killed who that year.

I would rather win this than a bronze sculpture of a . 1

Duckley Palace No. 13 Share Posted September 21 I would say Oregon vs Washington could be for an axe due to all the trees, but there already exists a Paul Bunyan Axe game in the B1G. There's also a Little Brown Jug , Illibuck and Heroes Game.
