Ohio State's Ryan Day: Defense Had To 'Start From Scratch’ After Oregon Ducks Loss

Recommended Posts

🤔Hmm.. "The No. 1 Oregon Ducks catapulted their season with an upset victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Oct 12 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. Ohio State coach Ryan Day says that loss compelled the team to go back to the drawing board and re-work the defense."

Credit to Coach Day and the Ohio State coaching staff for admitting that there were some issues that Oregon exposed and making adjustments. They came into the Oregon game overconfident that their front 4 could get pressure with minimal blitzing and that their CBs could cover Oregon’s receivers. Obviously, it did not go well for them. I’m sure we would see a different approach if the two teams played again and I’m sure that Coach Lanning and staff would make adjustments, as well.

That said, if Oregon’s offense is playing well, I’m not sure there is a defense in college football that will be able to completely stop it.

Seems like we heard the same thing in 2021?

I like how everything Ryan Day says sounds like Defensive Basics 101 when describing the "re-engineering" process they went through, LOL.

". . . what are the base foundations of what we're trying to get done?" (Typically done in the offseason before the season starts; maybe fine tune in easy non-conference games)

"Who are the best players?" (Typically done in the offseason before the season starts; maybe fine tune in easy non-conference games)

"What are teams scheming us up, in terms of what are they looking at?" (Typically done weekly before games start)

With these comments would Ryan Day survive if tOSU “reworked defense” falls short against Indiana?

Mike Tyson: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth."

Oregon punched Ohio State in the mouth (hit them with jabs and then went for the haymakers) and broke OSU's defense.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, Ohio State was overconfident that their NFL talent could beat Oregon in 1:1 matchups.  What they failed to recognize is that Oregon has NFL talent too, and some really good and freakin' fast wide receivers, and a QB that can drop a dime.  As one of our wide receivers said before or after the game, Ohio State hadn't seen anyone like Oregon's wide receivers.  Their game plan might work against the rest of the B1G but not Oregon..."that team out West" is "mighty different."

I'm expecting a much different game plan in a potential rematch; hopefully, Oregon's coaching staff makes some adjustments too and we can come out on top again.

That, and playing an A game instead of a B+ game.  No more points left behind.

Totally agree!

I find it strange that losing to the Ducks would require a complete breakdown and reconstruction of the defense, as opposed to some adjustments.

At this point, I'm hoping Indiana can take down tosu; don't really want a rematch.

Oregon had kept their pedal to the metal offense under wraps up to that point. In that weeks Oregon vs Them, we saw Lannng tell the coaching staff it’s time to introduce the BIG to Evan Stewart and that was spectacular!

So far the in the BIG Lanning has been a Rembrandt in a finger painting class.

In my "coke bottle glasses" visual grading, I don't think OBD has even played a B game. Every game has been B- or worse! Oregon’s game against osu was closer to a B game but still B-. Please continue to play the B- until the "natty" where I expect an A game!

A rematch would be problematic; but that would be a game of adjustments & I like Oregon in that situation. If Indiana can beat tOSU in the 'shoe, they'd be a very scary, unknown opponent.

OBD = playing 3D chess

Indiana = playing chess

Other B1G teams = playing plinko

Except for the B1G teams that are playing, without a "Clue"

Which teams are those? DL spread the punt line and UM had a player lined up against the center (penalty). DL calls a timeout and then sends a 12th player out to reduce the time remaining? Who's playing with a "clue?" 3D chess beats all other games!

Actually that's why Indiana playing tOSU is pretty advantageous.  Either way, Oregon he's a ton of information about both teams:

- How Indiana performs against a team of similar level of talent and depth as OBD (the Hoosiers will probably have to open their entire playbook for the game)

- What kind of "adjustments" Ryan Day has actually done to his defense (if any)

Complete credit to Lanning, the "spread the punt line" did require UM to line up wrong to get the penalty called.

Agreed, Indiana would make me very nervous; especially if they casually put up 40+ points like they have all year.

BUT, my hatred for tosu is unending. I don't want them in the CFP at all; it would bring me pure joy for them to miss.

The worst thing in any sport is arrogance. Most of the kids coming out of high school already have it, The biggest problem for any coach in sports is to calm that part out of their brain. Dan seems to have that gift.

On the other hand cockiness is ok unless it comes over the top. The one thing I like about Lanning is his ability to meld the best part of cockiness with execution and desire. Love that guy.

I had a college coach that was good at this and only the best coaches in college sports have the ability to do this.

It seems that nobody in his locker room is arrogant and it is a beautiful thing to see. His players interviews are some of the best I’ve seen at being humble.

Love the way Dan handled the spitting incident ( won’t mention his name ) and it was a valuable lesson for that player. He will now be a huge asset going forward. 👍

This is so much fun and hope Dan, Sauphia , and the boys are happy here and make them continue to be part of the Duck family. Best thing that has happened to football outside of Phill, of coarse, but Dan makes forget about that part, just for a moment.

This is why Saban was so great for so long. Alabama did nothing but recruit 4 & 5 stars while Saban was there. I'm sure he was great with the X's & O's, but his ability to blend the star's and eliminate complacency is what made him the GOAT. Looks like Lanning is starting the right way.

When Dan figures out he doesn’t have to play Madden football to win consistently then look out.
