Is the Committe's Sole Criteria to Make Sure an SEC Team with 3 Losses Get's into the Playoffs?

Does the Commitee just want that more?

This could get scary and crazy.  It does not matter how spots are in the Playoff; the SEC wants most of them!

The SEC got preference like no other conference did in the 4 team format, just stands to reason they would get the same with 12 teams. We're not talking about 3 loss LSU winning the SEC Championship getting the AQ. According to precedent a 3 L SEC team is definitely deserving of an at large selection.

Alabama got into the old format, without even being the SEC champion and won the National Championship. That proves they deserved it, right?

No, the only thing that proves is that any team that gets in can win it all.

"The 4 best teams" has now been replaced by the "12 best teams". I think there was more chance of an egregious snub with four, if your team is No.13, I don't think you'll have that much to cry about.

Currently, and kinda a shocker, Georgia is the first team out of this week's playoff rankings.

It's not a shocker if we are going on records, but it is a shocker that it's Georgia.

Big10 has 4 of the top 5.

Tennesse @ Georgia this Saturday is huge. Georgia opened at -8.5, which I think is interesting after last week's game against Ole Miss.

SSDD - It does not matter the quality of the teams you played; it matters how many losses are in your way. 2 Loss UGA is 9 spots behind a Texas team the Dawgs defeated in Austin 30-15, and it wasn't that close.

Strength of Schedule - Georgia is at or near No. 1. Texas has defeated 2 teams with winning records, Colorado State and Vanderbilt.

This ranking says, "We value wins and losses and not the quality of teams you played."

Yes, Texas beat a Brand Name OOC, 5-5 Michigan. This erases an embarrassing home loss to Georgia. 30-15 UGA and Kirby called off the Dawgs.

No wonder that Greg Sankey and Tony Petitti will demand a different format in 2026.

I was hoping against hope and hoping got the H kicked out of it.

Yeah, not a lot of criteria in that.

Based on the BCS and 4-team playoff, the SEC which dominated CFB, is not out of line wanting 4 spots at least and the B1G, looking at conference participants in the same period of time, is not out of line demanding 3 or 4 spots.

Notre Dame with 12-game no champ game schedule screws things up. Play 4 G5 teams? No problem. Half-ACC'd and miss Clemson, Pitt, Miami, and SMU, no problem.

The B12 and ACC champs will play chumps compared to the SEC and the B1G.

We have to put up with 'THIS' Abomination for this and next season. Then, the Power 2 will define the format.

ESPN has $1.3 billion reasons they would want to see more SEC representation in this years CFP. Proven viewership numbers that they can sell to their advertising clientele.

I would think that they would love to take a 3 loss SEC team over the BIG 12 champion if they could get away with it.

The fact that ND is going to get in with their schedule is a crime.  Throw in the fact that they have not won a major bowl game since the mid 90s, they should automatically be out for losing to Northern Illinois.

I would be okay with a 3 loss SEC getting in ahead of ND.  ND is going to get rolled, just like every year.

I read a scenario where there is an 8 way tie for 1st place in the SEC with just two conference games weeks left. They would all have 2 losses prior to the CCG.

Which would mean post conference championship game their would be 7 2 loss teams and one 3 loss team that was ranked second best by the SEC at the end of the regular season.

When this level of parity happened in the PAC12 they called it cannibalism and better luck next year chumps. When it happens in the SEC it just means they are the best conference and all of those top 8 deserve to be in the playoffs.

I'll take the glass half full approach here and laugh at every SEC team that gets left out that "deserved" to be in, just like FSU last year. There will be more than 1 of them for sure.

I have to ask, who is on the outside looking in, that should be in with this version of the bracket? Who would people move up in place of an SEC team? SMU? Colorado?

This looks pretty accurate as of 11/12 IMO.

Not that I want to be 'fair' to the SEC, but not all schedules are alike.

No. 12 Georgia - Has played 3 top 25 SEC teams on the road to date with a game Saturday vs. No. 7 Tennessee at home, a team that I think would wax No. 6 BYU. And Georgia played No. 20 Clemson OOC and has a game left vs. a Georgia Tech team which will not be a walk-over.

No. 3 Texas has 1 win vs a P4 team, Vanderbilt, and was destroyed by Georgia in Austin. Next best P4 win, vs. 5-5 Michigan.

No. 22 LSU and No. 23 Missouri are ranked for lack of a better reason. In a 12 team PO world there is no sense in ranking more than 12 teams plus top ranked P4 conference champs and a G5 representative not in the top 12. For ESPN entertainment value perhaps 15 teams should be ranked?

Giving Miami credit for defeating 6-3 Louisville. Giving Notre Dame credit for defeating 6-3 Louisville? WHY?

As I have opined before, probably ad nauseum, we will not see 'THIS' come 2026. (If I'm around to see it? 😁)

Just ask Paul "Fawn"baum.  He'll sort it all out by repeating his choices "ad nauseum", morning, noon, and night!  Being the definitive expert on the "superior" football conference in the history of all football conferences, now or in the future.

Of course the SEC needs FIVE teams in this year since it wouldn't be fair to all those poor 2loss teams that wouldn't have two losses if they weren't playing in such a tough, tough, conference.  (Also why next week is "beat down a G5 team in the SEC,  Sooo Hard to play another conference game).

It's not cannabalizing each other, it's putting on display the overwhelming toughness of the SEC.

There fixed it for the committee. Just get Paul on board the committee and we be good!

I think Georgia fans would disagree with your premise. Texas has one win vs. a P4 team with a winning record, Vanderbilt. Texas' other win over a team with a winning record came against Colorado State, not CU.

No. 12 UGA lost to No. 10 Alabama and No. 11 Ole Miss on the road. Through Week 11 UGA has the No. 1 Strength of Schedule before playing No. 7 Tennessee in Week 12. UGA toyed with Texas in Austin. A -3.5 favorite coming into the game, UGA won 30-15 in a game that was not that close.

Today, No. 12 Georgia would be knocked out of the playoff by No. 13 Boise State, and Texas would be seeded second.

Why? SSDD. Texas has One Loss, and UGA has Two Losses. THIS is exactly what Greg Sankey and Tony Petitti were concerned about with this format and humans making subjective decisions without disclosing the tools used in making the decisions.

Tony can breathe easy with Four B1G teams in the top five. Although Indiana is probably on the cusp depending on how performs in Columbus a week from this Saturday. Greg will have a more than respectable two-loss, not three-loss, SEC team, not Mizzou and LSU which are ranked only because the Committee needs to fill in the 25 spots, most likely left out. Even a three-loss Georgia would have played a far better strength of schedule than playoff teams with fewer losses.

Left out in favor of Notre Dame with a home loss to a G5 team, one of four G5 teams on its schedule, and a Bye on conference champ Saturday. The Domers' annual ACC sacrificial lambs conclude with a game vs. UVA on Saturday.

Left out in favor of likely 3 or 4-seed BYU, a team that was lucky, lucky, lucky to get a one-point win over Utah on Saturday which moved BYU up three spots? IMO, a 3-seed or 4-seed BYU will be waxed by the 5th or 6th-seed in the Fiesta Bowl.

Miami? Georgia played and blew out ACC Clemson and is favored by two TDs over Georgia Tech. SMU? Lost at home to BYU.

I have much respect for Georgia and Coach Smart but if a two-loss, forget about 3-loss Georgia, is left out I will be happy for one reason. This kind of snub will be close to guaranteeing that we have a more reasonable playoff format come 2026.

Great post, thanks.

When Texas plays at A+M on 11/30 if both have one loss and A+M wins, a team that lost to NOTRE DAME and was blown out by South Carolina will play in the SEC Champ game. 😁

Which is more impressive, going 7-2 against the No.1 ranked schedule, or 10-0 against the No.100 schedule.

What the committee knows, and what should not at all be obvious in these presentations, is that Indiana v. Ohio State simply becomes that much bigger if both teams enter with top-5 rankings.
