2025 B1G Recruiting: Elite Results, and Then a Cliff…

Recommended Posts

I have to say that I was surprised by the results of the B1G recruiting for the 2025 class. Yes, there are some who will be signed in the February period, but over 90% of recruiting is done, and it was quite interesting to see the breakdown in Oregon’s new conference. I even had to take time away from my ...

There used to be a guy who would hear on the radio a few year's ago, not Phil Steele, but along those lines, and his insight was, "the teams with the best coaching & most talented players are the most likely to win."

No kidding?

Lanning has shown that he's at the top when it comes to making coaching moves this season. But even more than that is the recruiting. Fortunately. their aren't many coaches who are playing Chess against Lanning, and far fewer still are going to match the recruiting results. That guy was right.

Great take, Charles!

A few thoughts.

1. Using Rivals makes sense. Focusing on the average recruiting ranking per player is the best indicator that a program is bringing in impact players.

2. As Urban Meyer noted on B1G Today, the O-line is the most difficult position to recruit and develop. Experienced O-line players in the portal will be in demand. (Especially, in Columbus, Ohio.)

3. Having a Blue Chip Roster (BCR) via recruiting or combined recruiting and portal pickups matters and then some. No Team that won the BCS or a 4-team PO title did so without a BCR. Now, with a 16 or 17-game schedule, the depth and talent of every roster will be challenged.

If the BCR Natty requirement holds up in 2024/25, one-third of the field, ASU, Boise State, Indiana, and SMU have no chance of winning it all.

4. The 8 B1G recruiting winners Charles identified likely make the cut if a Super League is coming.  The others will look to be added based on tradition and/or location. Do you need two teams in LA? Two teams in Michigan?

5. If the House settlement is approved, how many P4 teams will step up to the plate and pay $20M+ to its student-athletes every season? How many teams will be able to afford the cost of being in the FBS mix?

In today's world of NIL and unrestrained CFB free agency, how many programs have a coach with the chops and the finances to recruit well, portal pick with aplomb, and blend the players into a cohesive 'All for One' unit? How many coaches have the energy to meet the demands of today's game? Saint Nick exited to ESPN; thank goodness OBD has ABR (Always Be Recruiting) Dan the Man.

Thanks again, Charles. Another enlightening take.

Total Tennessee! Overwhelm Ohio State!

Can you imagine the heat on Day if that happens.  Not only lose to Oregon and Michigan, but out in the first round of playoffs  Wow.

Of course, who do they get to replace him . . . Riley is my pick.

Charles, you finally crossed the line.

Oregon has only one Uncle and his name isn't Cliff.

Cliff will go down in infamy for both the Natty and "smoked it all".

And he was robbed on an int vs Auburn.

Looks like the anti-parity in the B1G is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

I'm pretty surprised to see Indiana and Michigan State do so poorly for their 2025 classes.

I do not think Mike Riley is coaching any more🤣

He gave us a new word...

Cliff Harris coined the term "Natty" back in 2010 and the term has stuck with Ducks fans ever since -- like it or not.

I am stunned at how badly most teams did in the B1G...I mean Northwestern does not sign a SINGLE Blue-Chip player?  Whew!

I've decided that I like it...when Oregon is one of those at the top!

The cliff makes our conference schedule easier year to year.

We've had good O-lines, getting a 5* or two there would be nice, but Penei was only 4 stars...4* developed is just as good, some 5* players never pan out...Lache Seastrunk, or the DT from Hawaii who played what, 4 snaps as a Duck?

Our D-line quality and depth right now is why we are #1 and have a good chance to be #1 on January 21st, the only date this season where a ranking matters.

Getting at least 1  5* on D-line a year is my biggest recruiting want

For those reading this thread who do not know what we are referring to...I list the number of Blue-Chip players going to each of the B1G schools in the article, and it is quite the eye-opener.

If Oregon makes it back to the "Natty" this year, Cliff Harris has to come back for the pregame speech, right?

Speaking of elite recruits, Cliff was one of them.  That kid was seriously special.  I wish it would have turned out differently for him, but he was sure fun to watch while it lasted.  One of my favorite Duck players of all time (along with Reuben Droughns).

Oregon with a 95% blue chip rate?  Never in a million years did I think that would happen in my lifetime.  What a great time to be a Duck fan.

Based on recruiting, when Cignetti stated he was building the next college football superpower, I think he smoked it all as well.
