It Just Kept Getting Worse. No.22 Illinois 109 No.9 Oregon 77

Recommended Posts

As you may have noticed, our men's hoopsters are ranked #9, and have a 12-1 record.

Over the next 10 days, we play 4 tough games... starting TONIGHT AT HOME against a tough #21 ranked Illinois.

So, if you can make it to the game tonight, do it.

Dana Altman and Co might just be doing something very special this season.

Yes this team is really good and more pieces keep falling into place. Shelstad is starting to score consistently, Moss had a good game, Bamba is coming out of his slump. It must be hard to manage all this talent but Altman appears to have found the way. He has so many combinations of players. No one appears to be playing more than twenty minutes so it keeps the players fresh. So many of the problems like penalties, free throws or turnovers are not a problem for this team. They are playing loose, fast and efficient ball. They are well worth watching.

You are really hitting on some big keys for this team right now. They appear to be playing quite unselfishly, and the off the bench play is just exceptional.

Usually, Altman teams don't gel until late mid-February, so this is pretty fabulous.

The next 10 days will be a great test for them. The away games at OSU & PSU will be especially interesting... but Illinois and Maryland are tough too.

How about a 2 Seed for the Ducks? Maybe we don't want a 1 Seed right now.

For all the big-name Big Ten additions, Oregon is the most surprising -- and among the best -- of the bunch.

Yes. Another sport to dominate the BIG in year one. Team looks complete and ready, willing and able.

The only thing I see missing is Shelstad hitting more threes, for some reason he's been in a little bit of a slump this year. Tracy and Bartholomew are shooting amazing from outside but need some help from the other guards along with Evans and Bittle not shooting anymore threes.

That's the only glaring weakness of this team that I see and I'm sure that'll just get better. Looking forward to the exciting year of men's basketball.

This year's team looks great already. They are fun to watch.

If they can continue to improve, as Altman's teams usually do, they should be able to make a deep run in the tourney.

The only real weak spot I see is blocking out/rebounding.

As we know, Altman's teams always get stronger/better with team chemistry later in the season.  They are already ahead of where they normally start in the season.  This is great news!

Shelstad hit some threes in the last game, one from NBA range. He and Bamba, and Bathalamy can hit the threes when they are hot. Tracy also is good with threes. They don't even need to shoot threes because they are so good at getting to the basket. The ball handling is getting really good, wonderful passing and the turnovers are decreasing. They are really fun to watch.

I'll be honest I probably enjoy the ride with basketball, baseball, or other sports in general since I don't really have expectations with them, we don't get the constant hype, or the feeling like its championship or bust, do I get bummed out when they lose....of course, but it's not like I expected to win it all.  I honestly think I enjoy these other sports more than football because of this.

No. 9 Oregon hosts No. 22 Illinois in first Top 25 matchup at home since 2020

The Oregon men's basketball program gets back into Big Ten Conference play Thursday night when they host their first Top 25 matchup at home since the 2020 season.

The basketball team is having trouble scoring too.  26% from the field in the first 10 minutes.

I hope we wake up soon.

Shelstad hit his first shot for a 2-0 lead, now he's 1-4. Getting beat on the boards, and where's he D? Illinois is on pace to get 90!

Wow.  Not a good week to be a duck.  Getting absolutely run off the floor.

Man, do I miss Mac Court! No.9 Oregon wouldn't be playing a game like this in the "Pit". Illinois hasn't won a road game this season, they're the youngest team in the B1G, and they're blowing the Ducks off the floor! Cameron Indoor is nothing like Mac Court was, But for this era it's wild. MKA? Nothing.

Hard to stop a team shooting 50% from 3.

Interestingly enough. In the Ducks one loss this season, UCLA shot 53%, 12-23 on 3's, here at MKA. One difference, the Ducks almost won that game, and the final score was 73-71.

UW beat Maryland, so they should be plenty pissed when we play them.  Yikes.

Now up to 53.6 % 15-28 from 3, extremely hard to beat a team that just can't miss.

The only guy that really showed up tonight was Supreme Cook. That was extremely disappointing to get embarrassed at home like that.

That might have been worse than the football game yesterday.  It’s close.

Well... getting out butts kicked by 32 points AT HOME was not exactly what I was looking for or expecting.

I give up. I'm done.

Everything Illinois threw into the air came down through the hoop.

16 threes, that's crazy. The b-ball team's D looked as porous yesterday's football defense.

Tough week to be a Duck fan.

I believe that Illinois victory was the largest margin of victory for a road team against a Top 10 team in the history of the NCAA.

So, yes, I think this was somehow even worse than the football loss.

Ducks started the game with impressive defensive intensity and jumped to a 7-2 lead. Then Illinios started banging, bumping, and contenting everything and OBD seemed to wilt. Doesn't bode well for a long season in the Big. Curious to hear Dana's assessment.

Curious to hear Dana's assessment.

Let's start with the Understatement of all understatements:

The Oregon men's basketball team will look to bounce back at home Sunday after coming up on the short end of a top-25 matchup with Illinois at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday.

Coming up on the short end?

"One team was well prepared and one team wasn't; one team was well coached and one team wasn't," UO coach Dana Altman said. "I've got to take my share of the responsibility. We just didn't guard."

"I've always told the guys, you're judged by how you respond," Altman said. "We're going to have to bounce back."

Maryland lost last night @ Washington. Which team is going to Bounce back? The team on the road, or the No.9 team at home?

Sometimes you need a butt whipping to get your head on straight. I really thought they had the experience on this team that they wouldn't have these kinds of games, I guess I was wrong.

Irregardless, I will support all duck teams whatever may come like I have done for many years. The bb team will bounce back, I have faith in them.

If ever a 4th game in conference play can be termed "Must Win" it's the game against Maryland. The No.9 isn't important, but it was an acknowledgement of the season, as well as the No.2 Seed. But, Oregon really doesn't want to start B1G play, 1-3, with 2 losses at home.

After Maryland, it's @ Ohio State, @ Penn, State. then Home for Purdue & Washington, who just beat Maryland, who beat Ohio State worse than Illinois beat OBD. It was at Maryland, but the B1G conference schedule really is Must Win every game. Go, Ducks!

Starting conference play with 5 of 6 games against Q1 teams is really rough.  Typically, Oregon didn't play that many Q1 games in an entire season in the PAC.

The schedule is so challenging, Oregon should have 12-14 Q1 games by the end of the year.

Lunardi still has Oregon as a 2 seed as of yesterday.  Jerry Palm has us as a 3 Seed.

Need to beat Maryland tomorrow.  I hope we decide to play a little defense.
