It would be a terrible waste of his recruiting skills, IMHO.

No doubt about that. However, in the Athlon article that was posted earlier, he said he wants to get beyond being a recruiter. A while back his dream was to be the youngest NFL coach in history. He's running out of time for that, but it seems like the NFL, where he will be able to coach, not just be valued as a recruiter, is where he wants to be.

Feels like he'd have a better shot at being an NFL coach if he were a successful college coach first.

Good for him.

Bad for us.

Time for DL to get that notebook of names out, and find us another diamond.

And if his goal is to be in the NFL he frankly needs to get out of college.

The two are two different systems and there tends not to be a ton of cross over. In short you didn't see a lot of coaches just move between the two on ayearly basis. Certainly not head coaches anymore...

If he wants to be a head coach in the NFL he needs to be in the NFL circle.

All comes down to his personal goals.

This is very true. Only three college coaches have gone to the NFL and won the Super Bowl. Pete Carroll was previously the HC of the Patriots before USC, so he had previous NFL experience. Jimmy Johnson is the only coach to go straight into the NFL from college and win the Super Bowl. Barry Switzer was the other one but he was a figurehead.

And we haven't seen many NFL coaches be successful at the college level. Pete Carroll just continues to be the exception.

We'll see how Bill B does at North Carolina but most of us doubt he'll turn the program into a contender over night.

Maybe a bit interesting that the Cowboy's RB coach is expected to be slotted at between $400,000 and $450,000.

Tashard Choice is already making $700,000 at Texas and Samples I believe is set for a bump to $650,000 at Oregon if he stays.

Certainly it isn't always about the $ as both coaches interviewed for the job with likely knowledge of what Jerry Jones and Dallas is going to be offering. Just more to where college football is at, the $ involved, and the continued blurring line between college and the NFL.

All that said, I could very much see how coaches might tire of recruiting, NIL, the portal, having to work year around on roster retention, and the realities of player poaching. Life in the NFL, with its other non-monetary benefits, might be looking more and more appealing.

It will be interesting if there is a publicly reported salary for Chip in Las Vegas.   He was $2 million base at Ohio St, and garnered $850K in bonus money for this season on top of that.   He, or Raiders, have to pay tOSU $350K to secure his departure.

Though, he likely has a sack from his termination money with the Eagles and 49ers which gives him freedom to make his own choices.  His UCLA salary wasn't low ball, but living in L.A. wasn't cheap.  He was 61 in November.

Breaking:  I just read a NFL sports writer's Twitter that says, "lured with a deal averaging $6 million per year" making him the NFL's highest paid coordinator.

I was listening to ESPN the other day and one of the pundits posited that Schottenheimer is a one year coach.

His take was Jerry missed on the top tier coaches this year and will see who becomes available next year and likely dump Schottenheimer.

So the net is whomever gets the job , maybe it's short term.

Who really knows what Jerry is thinking.

There is something to be said about having a NFL team on your coaching resume. However, job security is also attractive. Anybody know what Adrien Klemm is up to these days?

The Oregon Ducks got some significant coaching news on Monday morning regarding running back coach Ra'Shaad Samples.

Over the weekend, Samples' name was floated as a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys RB job. He then posted a two-word message on social media implying that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

"#ScoDucks" Samples wrote on his X account.

According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Samples, a Texas native, was expected to interview with the Dallas Cowboys for their vacant RB coach position. Samples has been in Eugene for one season after joining the Ducks last year, replacing Carlos Locklyn, who left to take the RB job at Ohio State.

Samples is regarded as not only an elite offensive coach but also one of the best recruiters in the nation. He played a major role in Oregon's landing 5-star WR Dakorien Moore in the 2025 class.

Oregon Ducks running backs coach Ra'Shaad Samples reportedly will turn down the Dallas Cowboys RB job and return to Eugene for the 2025 season.

Not sure he has a gig at the moment.

His son is at ASU but pretty sure he is not on staff there.

But could working for Jerry be better than the things cited above?

Assuming the Dallas gig is $450k, I think his current contract buy out is more than that so he’d be losing money the entire first year if he left.
