However, in the Athlon article that was posted earlier, he said he wants to get beyond being a recruiter. A while back his dream was to be the youngest NFL coach in history. He's running out of time for that, but it seems like the NFL, where he will be able to coach, not just be valued as a recruiter, is where he wants to be. In short you didn't see a lot of coaches just move between the two on ayearly basis. Certainly not head coaches anymore... If he wants to be a head coach in the NFL he needs to be in the NFL circle. Only three college coaches have gone to the NFL and won the Super Bowl. Pete Carroll was previously the HC of the Patriots before USC, so he had previous NFL experience. Jimmy Johnson is the only coach to go straight into the NFL from college and win the Super Bowl. Barry Switzer was the other one but he was a figurehead. AnotherOD No. 9 Share Posted February 3 (edited) Maybe a bit interesting that the Cowboy's RB coach is expected to be slotted at between $400,000 and $450,000. Tashard Choice is already making $700,000 at Texas and Samples I believe is set for a bump to $650,000 at Oregon if he stays. Certainly it isn't always about the $ as both coaches interviewed for the job with likely knowledge of what Jerry Jones and Dallas is going to be offering. Just more to where college football is at, the $ involved, and the continued blurring line between college and the NFL. All that said, I could very much see how coaches might tire of recruiting, NIL, the portal, having to work year around on roster retention, and the realities of player poaching. He was $2 million base at Ohio St, and garnered $850K in bonus money for this season on top of that. He, or Raiders, have to pay tOSU $350K to secure his departure. Though, he likely has a sack from his termination money with the Eagles and 49ers which gives him freedom to make his own choices. His UCLA salary wasn't low ball, but living in L.A. wasn't cheap. He was 61 in November. Breaking: I just read a NFL sports writer's Twitter that says, "lured with a deal averaging $6 million per year" making him the NFL's highest paid coordinator. His take was Jerry missed on the top tier coaches this year and will see who becomes available next year and likely dump Schottenheimer. So the net is whomever gets the job , maybe it's short term. Over the weekend, Samples' name was floated as a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys RB job. He then posted a two-word message on social media implying that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. "#ScoDucks" Samples wrote on his X account. According to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Samples, a Texas native, was expected to interview with the Dallas Cowboys for their vacant RB coach position. Samples has been in Eugene for one season after joining the Ducks last year, replacing Carlos Locklyn, who left to take the RB job at Ohio State. Samples is regarded as not only an elite offensive coach but also one of the best recruiters in the nation. He played a major role in Oregon's landing 5-star WR Dakorien Moore in the 2025 class.
