On a Monday morning in November of 1957, I, Bob Prall, was told, “Last night some Oregon State University Aggies used a chain saw to cut up our wooden “O” on Eugene’s Skinner’s Butte. They are going to burn it in their homecoming bonfire on Friday night.” I was an officer in the Order of the “O,” and was asked, ...

My FishDuck Friends, this story above is wonderful, and was written by Bob Prall at current age 89, recounting his time as an Oregon student. So many references to a time when things were a bit more pure, and a story that is just good fun.

Do pass this one along to your Oregon State friends, as I'm sure they will enjoy it too.

Great article. Sounds like it was a good ruse by the "Letter of the O". However, they should have taken them to the Dexter Lake Club for a night of drinks and dancing.

Bob, simply fantastic! Further proof that 89 is the new 50.

I love the blasts from the past.

'Looked up phone numbers.' Younger OBDers, the numbers were found in a book, not on a handheld computer.

'Prepared maps.' To accomplish this, you needed to examine printed materials and write down the directions using something referred to as a pen or pencil on something called 'paper.' If you got lost, the paper most definitely did not speak to you to get you back on track.

I'm guessing here, but I imagine there was less traffic, coming and going, on what is referred to today as the I-5.

'Coats and ties.' Huh?

'Pay phone.' Huh?

'1957 Open.' I'm on the verge of becoming a mere octogenarian, and I'm pretty sure you could kick my 'young' butt on the golf course.😁

No Amber Alert? No police dragnet? No disgruntled families, 'victims,' or editors-in-chief. And college authorities with a sense of humor? Who knew?

Thank you, Sir, can we have another?

It is amazing to think that "Animal House" was meant to depict the mid-60s, and this episode actually happened about a decade earlier.

An outstanding prank in a simpler time.
