Transfer Portal Losses Well Over 20 Leaving Now...

Featured Replies

How can we sustain a class or even next year with this many leaving, understand where some of these kids are coming from wanting playing time. Unfortunately there is a lack of talent in the portal. Indiana and others have taken up a lot of talent in the portal already. I've had faith in Dan the man, but its starting to loose its luster a tad.

Always a fan, born and raised in oregon wanting better for our team, but this really hurts IMO. Hopingand praying we can do better. We need some fresh coaching on offense keep seeing the same old plays

Did you see any STARTERS leaving? No. It is routine for those who do not start to want playing time elsewhere, and while it appears to hurt our depth...we don't know the full story yet between transfers to Oregon and the HS recruiting class coming in to provide depth. Perhaps you are new at this?

Funny...I do not recall seeing you post when things were great,...just when you have a complaint?

James Crepea, earlier today when Purchase announcement was made as No. 17 guy

Purchase's 352 defensive snaps were 14th for Oregon, 3rd among edge defenders

With 16 scholarship and 2 PWO transfers so far Oregon has lost players that saw a combined 879 defensive snaps and 621 offensive snaps,

For perspective, the season team total plays snaps:  988 offense, 932 defense  (15 games).

So, Purchase would have been on the field for 352/932 = 37.8% of the snaps.

All defensive players:  879 snaps out of 10,252 (932x11players) = 8.6%.

All offensive players:  621 snaps out of 10,868 (988x11players) = 5.7%

But, keep in mind those small percentages are just players who are in the portal.  Seniors who played and are graduating would have to be added if you were calculating the total amount of snap experience not returning next season.

But, Charles point still applies: the portal guys (not the graduating guys) may have been able to help next year, but they were seeking a guarantee of playing time they didn't have this season.

Charles yoir right, and this isnt a complaint at all, hard to keep it rolling 25 players would represent what 20 to 25 percent of the roster, crazy numbers, this is quite a bit more then what the average teams are loosing. Just saying red flag? Perhaps? Maybe not? But thats a ton of depth off the roster either way. I hate seeing kids jumping ship like this, it iddnt help our RB depth in the end while still playing. Just an opinion or obervation

Everyone here uses good punctuation for the reading ease of others; please reciprocate the same courtesy back, as you can click the three dots in the upper right corner of your post and edit within an hour of posting.

In reference to your post, it is apparent you have not followed this before. Every year we have massive portal transfers of those who did not start, and we get highly experienced great players who portal transfer in.

I suggest you withhold judgment of how the program is being run until after the portal period has ended.

Thanks.

As of early this Sunday, these were "into-portal" numbers for the top conference standings:

7 - Indiana - still have a game Jan. 19 which affects when their portal ends later

29 - Ohio St

15 - Oregon (more now - others may get higher too)

27 - Michigan

20 - USC

other teams which lost coaches: 36 Michigan St, 49 Penn St

As of Saturday, yesterday, some from the SEC:

  • Auburn – 36

  • Arkansas – 35

  • Mississippi State – 34

  • LSU – 32

  • Florida – 30

  • Tennessee – 25

  • Oklahoma – 25

  • Missouri – 24

  • Texas – 22

Those SEC teams already have a good start on replacements over "late players" like Oregon. But still, they had to deal with the disruption.

No wonder Saban retired. He was 3-3 in CFP championships. How many of those 6 games might have fallen off the radar if he had been busy replacing players due to the portal?

No.

I suppose I shouldn't be cynical, but when I look at that portal list of out-bound announcements I'm reminded of all those guys within that list who when recruited said, "I chose it because it was my dream school."

And, that list isn't final yet for 2026. And, 2027 will bring another list of guys who maybe stuck around for one more year before leaving their "dream school."

Crazy.

No.

In addition to the Indiana out-bound number being low due to their continuing portal window dates as a result of them still scheduled for a game, another factor is in play.

They have a lot of mature guys whose college playing careers will end at that last game. They have no more eligibility to use if they enter the portal. So, they have a bunch of guys who won't be portal eligible.

As a result, in Indiana's case, the number to monitor will be in-bound transfers and recruiting. So far, they have a combined 22 recruits and 12 in-transfers. They will likely be seeking more in-bound transfers to offset the losses of guys who won't be back or going anywhere else.

My understanding is that before entering the portal players meet with coach Lanning. I suspect that he is totally honest about their prospects of playing time. He may even say: “Sorry it didn’t work out for you. You’re going to have a better chance of getting on the field at a different school.”

The coaching staff must make room for players who can make major contributions.

Only 40 to 50 % entering portal continue playing football. Only 25 to 30% stay at D1 level.

25% churn is the new norm for a healthy program.

Why Oregon Ducks fans shouldn't panic over numerous DL transfers

87598935007-usatsi-27592398-168418362-lo

Which would you rather have: A starting defensive line that is experienced and has proven that it can be among the most productive and dominant in the nation, or a starting defensive line that consists of promising talent but little experience?

The answer seems pretty obvious to me.

Sure, the Ducks lost a handful of guys who would have played valuable roles on next year's team, and replacing them won't be easy. But they also got a foursome of potential first and second-round picks to agree to come back for one more year. That's not easy to do, and the upside that it brings to this defense is immeasurable.

Looking around at the portal rate for other top ten teams, I think it's safe to say the the era of a legit three deep is over. I wonder how this affects Lanning's coaching hires moving forward. I think prioritizing coaches that can prep players for the pros to lure elite portal players will be more important than elite recruiters of players that just portal out anyway.

An interesting piece in The Athletic (pay site) about Ohio State which has seen 29 players enter the portal, so far.

short excerpt

Why is Ohio State losing so much? Keeping depth players sidelined for multiple years doesn’t work anymore when they can get money and playing time elsewhere. But Ohio State’s commitment to developing high school players, which has been the Buckeyes’ philosophy for years, is being overhauled right now.

Losing 29 players to the transfer portal is never good. That’s the equivalent of losing an entire recruiting class.

On the one hand, though, there are reasons to be optimistic about next year because Ohio State is returning 9 of its 11 offensive starters, has a talented linebacker corps, and is working to add more defensive pieces in the portal with another week in the window.

But there’s also the pessimistic, and possibly more realistic view, that no matter what Ohio State’s transfer portal plan is, it doesn’t matter if it can’t land the players it is recruiting. Waiting for players to enter the portal later is fine, but it puts a higher emphasis on locking them in as recruits than ever before.

Ohio State doesn’t live in a “we tried” world. Expectations are too high for the Buckeyes. They need to add some impact players sooner rather than later.

Tobi Haastrup is the one player I was high on to develop. So there must be a reason he is going. Mothudi was disappointing to see him go.

All the others I think the team will be fine without them. I wish I had seen Luke Moga play more as a Duck. I wanted to see some flashes of Dennis Dixon.

The best way to know if Oregon lost a guy who would have been really good is to see what he does on his new team.

For the most part in recent history, we have not been missing much.

On the other hand, the incoming transfers under Lanning have mostly been very positive. I would like to see some edge rushers come in to this cycle. I also think they need to add some more O linemen. They can always use another Derrick Harmon or Jordan Burch. Inside linebacker could be a need, or the staff might be high on the young players who have yet to play much.

A positive note on the outgoing bunch is how many young players are staying (at least for now) to develop.

I think that when this thing is done and set, we will be amazed at the roster upgrade for 2026. I want to see an overall increase in team speed.

I may have missed this if it’s already been mentioned, but how many of the players currently in the portal are following Tosh and Stein to their new programs?

It seems reasonable to think this has inflated our usual portal numbers, especially once Lanning is upfront with players about their limited chances of cracking the two-deep. To this point, we’ve only lost one player who was actually on the two-deep, which matters.

I’m going to continue trusting Lanning until he gives us a real reason not to.

I understand the frustration with Friday night’s performance. That said, taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, I don’t remember us entering the season with realistic national championship expectations.

We took another step forward this year, and I genuinely believe that progress will continue next season. I’ll start calling for heads or leadership changes when I see this program stall or regress—not while it’s still moving forward.

This makes it seem so. I also saw a post from an insider that stated Dan Lanning almost kicked Tosh to the curb after the JMU game for recruiting guys to Cal.
